LAZARO CARDNEAS, Mexico, May 31 (UPI) -- A new, violent and cult-like drug trafficking group has taken over the day-to-day political life of the Mexican state of Michoacan, residents allege.

Called La Familia Michoacana, the drug cartel can, at times, dictate who will run for office and frequently puts its own people up for election, which critics say is a perversion of democracy, the Los Angeles Times reported Sunday.

The newspaper said Mexican federal authorities last week arrested 10 Michoacan mayors and 20 other local officials as part of a drug probe, alleging La Familia has infiltrated many city halls as the state and country prepares for national contests on July 5.

Police say local leaders in Michoacan told them the slaying last week of congressional candidate Gustavo Bucio Rodriguez at his gas station was only a common crime. A few days before, former Lazaro Cardneas Mayor Nicolas Leon was tortured and shot to death, with a message of "FM" (Familia Michoacana) left on his body as a warning to rival drug gangs, the Times said.

"There are mayors and politicians who 'let things happen,' and there are some who have sold their soul to the devil," an unnamed Michoacan state official told the newspaper.

Poster Comment:

This is not one of the three major drug cartels. If things continue as they are on this side of the border, a Mexican drug cartel will seize control at least in part of an American state.

Don't they have them all?

It's odd how this would have been happening for the past decade but we're just now starting to hear about it being a "problem."

D, I know that you are serious, and rightfully concerned.

R, I know that you know what's happening, and are having fun with it.

God only knows how bad it will get here.

No, I ain't kidding.

I know some Mexicans here in Houston that are getting the hell out of their native country, specifically because too many of their freinds and family are being kidnapped.

The other day one of our associates who's from the Middle East got run off the road and got shot in the face. When my Mexican friend heard the story, you could just see the fear in his face. The way these guys operated is just how they do in Mexico. They chase you down and pin your car up against the curb and rob your or snatch you.

It seems that our shared effort here on 4um is to restore law and order. The constitution, flawed as it is, is our law. We believe that we each can read it and understand it, since its language is plain. We see that the law is being ignored. We know the consequences of not upholding the law: in effect, anarchy occurs. With open borders and open immigration we can expect third world peoples to bring their problems to our shores. It's just the way human beings are.

I apologize because I know you're both worried about the symptoms here, but I keep thinking about the causes.

Don't never apologize.

Other posters will take this as a sign of weakness, and will stake you to the nearest anthill in the hot, hot sun.
