Sarah Palin has begun to get on the nerves of Republican senators who say the former GOP vice presidential nominee is taking her own White House aspirations entirely too seriously.

But those same senators may have their eye on a 2012 White House run or be friends with senators with presidential ambitions. And Palin, who does not have a lot of Washington connections, energized the party’s grass roots in 2008 while bucking the D.C. establishment, leaving much of the party’s elite grumbling about her appeal to the conservative base.

Several GOP senators offered searing criticism of the Alaska governor when asked in recent interviews whether she could pose a credible challenge to President Obama in 2012.

“She has to hunker down and govern and show she’s not a joke,” said a GOP lawmaker who represents one of the southern battlegrounds of the 2012 election.

Palin re-emerged in the national political spotlight this week, attending fundraisers in New York and sitting down for an interview with Fox News anchor Sean Hannity.

But her high-profile foray to the East Coast has not been without its stumbles — and a scheduling spat with the Senate and House Republican fundraising committees threatens to raise more questions about her viability as a national party leader.

“She’s had some struggles, saying yes and no to the invitation. Her PAC [political action committee] has stalled,” the GOP lawmaker noted.

Republicans are frustrated that Palin has wavered over whether to accept an invitation to appear as the headline guest at Monday’s fundraising bash for National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) and National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC).

Only a few hours before its start time, The Washington Post reported Palin would attend the dinner.

She reportedly worried that she could overexpose herself on the national political stage. But several GOP senators said she has much graver problems to worry about than attending a private dinner to raise money for Republican candidates for Congress.

“[Democrats and the media] did a number on her,” said the lawmaker from the southern battleground. “She has some hurdles, especially among independents and Democrats.

“She lost support among the independents and moderate Republicans, and a lot of them give money,” the lawmaker added.

But the lawmaker said that Palin could pursue a path similar to the libertarian Republican presidential candidate, Rep. Ron Paul (Texas), who raised tens of millions of dollars in small gifts over the Internet.

A senior GOP lawmaker said that while Palin may not be taken seriously by some Washington elites, she remains wildly popular among blue-collar conservative voters.

“Her supporters relish the idea that she doesn’t have a lot of money; she could raise it in small amounts over the Internet like Barack Obama,” said the lawmaker. “She’s about the only person in our party who can draw a crowd.

“She appeals not just to social conservatives but also to a lot of blue-collar, working-class Republicans in my state,” he added.

“People in the Northeast who read The New York Times and went to elite colleges dismiss her, but a lot of people in the country like candidates who don’t like Washington and don’t speak with an affected accent.”

Another GOP senator, who endorsed Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) early in the 2008 primary, argues Palin would face a lot of difficulty raising money. He said she had little appeal among the major fundraisers who made up McCain’s financial base.

“I don’t see her being a candidate in 2012,” said the lawmaker. “I don’t think she has the financial base to run. I don’t think she can convert the McCain fundraisers to her camp.

“You need to be able to raise $500 million or you’re not even in the game. That tends to thin out the field fairly quickly. It’s tough coming from a [small] state like Alaska.”

Palin’s political spokeswoman did not respond to request for comment.

For Monday’s high-profile fundraiser, NRSC Chairman John Cornyn (Texas) offered Palin a seat at his table and organizers discussed the possibility of her making an appearance on stage. But NRCC Chairman Pete Sessions (Texas) objected to the arrangement, according to a source outside the NRCC but involved in planning the dinner.

Sessions may not have wanted Palin to overshadow former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.), who had raised a significant share of money for the multimillion-dollar dinner. The dinner organizers asked Gingrich to deliver the keynote address after they failed to nail down a firm commitment from Palin.

Palin’s team was offended that Republicans rescinded the offer to speak at the mega-event and threatened not to send the governor to the dinner, even though she was scheduled to be in Washington on Monday.

Meanwhile, Democratic strategists delighted over the confusion caused by the spat.

“Oh, to be a fly on the wall during the NRCC-NRSC dinner planning meetings,” quipped a senior House Democratic political aide.

Palin has shown herself to be a magnet for political drama since McCain tapped her as his running mate in August. This penchant for melodrama has left a bad taste among some members of the stately GOP Senate conference.

One GOP senator questioned whether Palin has enough gravitas for voters to trust her in tough economic times.

“If the economy implodes, I don’t see her as having much of a chance,” said the lawmaker, who noted that Palin’s national political ambitions have caused her political troubles at home. “She has also taken on water up there in Alaska.”

Apparently Palin is considered a significant threat to the owners of the Dem/GOP political consortium.

Sums it up nicely.. Here is a young lady that has a set of balls.. and while she and I would disagree on a cpl issues, I'll take her over the shit at the top of the GOP, any day..

I see you and christine are enamoured by sarah palin. Your assessment that she has a set of balls is laughable at best. Apparently you are looking at her chest and really can't see anything else.

As for being different than the shit at the top of the GOP, where have you been the last year? Sarah is a israhelli firster and has publically proclaimed her love of israhell and promised to do their bidding. She even displays an israhelli flag in her office.

She is such an air head and was portrayed very appropriately by Tina Fey on Saturday Night Live during the prez/vp campaign. Do you really think that she will stop being a neo-con and a willing puppet of the PTB? Are you that delusional? I believe christine is somewhat fascinated by sarah. Christine keeps posting articles about sarah every chance she gets.

Sarah would be no different than bushkie and obanger the past and present puppet. I'm surprised you haven't realized that fact yet.

i don't like her politics. had she been coupled with Ron Paul and her ideology aligned with his, i would feel quite different. she's a proud advocate of the war on terror, of israel, and of amnesty.

now find one post where i've ever written anything about palin other than criticism of her neocon ideology. i don't like republicans or democrats. hell, LAC, you've gotten on my case numerous times for criticizing Ron Paul for remaining a republican. doh.

I stand guilty of criticising you for criticising Ron Paul and do you know why? In case you haven't figured it out yet, I'll tell you why. You claim you don't like demonwits and pubbiecrats and neither do I.

Your dislike for pubbiecrats is because you feel jilted by Ron Paul for dropping out of the presidential race and then running for re-election for his House seat as a pubbie. For us(U.S.) that was and is a blessing. No one with an ounce of brain matter can deny that Ron Paul has the right message and antidote for our mations ills. Had he ran as an independent for re-election to his House seat, he would have lost and we wouldn't hear from or about him again. He tried the independent route before for president, saw Pat Buchanan and H.Ross Perot do the same, and saw the results. The two factions of our one party cannot be overcome by a third party candidate because the electorate has been dumbed down and hoodwinked into believing there is a difference between them. There isn't.

Ron Paul ran for president as a pubbie with the right message and certainly with the right principles. He just could not gain the support of the voters because of the media assassination and the massive warchest($$$$) of the PTB's favotite son. Looking back the PTB tried to cram rudy down our throats, then Romney, followed by Huckabee, Fred Thompson and finally the evil John Mcinsane. Each one of them are losers but the biggest loser and deservedly so has been the dumbed down voters.

Ron Paul supporters raised alot of money and a one day record amount. It was done over the internet and I know you contributed as well as others of us. I didn't have the extra money to contribute as much as the law allowed because of medical bills and expenses thanks to our wonderful medical system. Because of the amout of money you contributed, you have a sore spot for Ron Paul's failure to get elected. I do not have that same feeling. I feel very remorseful for our country and the chance we had to elect the best candidate in my 66 years of my life and I will always thank Ron Paul for trying especially at his age and having to not only buck his party for the nomination, but the media as well.He never compromised his position or his beliefs thru it all. All the others flip-flopped as diected by TPB.

Ron Paul made a run for president being the first to really use the internet. Unfortunately their weren't enough of us savvy voters here on the internet to put him in the whitehouse. The establishment learned for the first time the power of the internet and know full well that the next time the savvy internet voters might pull an upset of the status-quo and help elect a "REAL PATRIOT" as president. The internet has scared TPB and they want to control it and just might shut it down in the future.

With your permission, to ease your mind, relieve your bellyaching over Ron Paul, I will personally write to him asking him to return your campaign contributions you made to his campaign. I can only promise you that I will try. Just say yes and I will fire off a letter to him. It sure doesn't look good for the next great candidate that may come along to see a whiney sore loser flapping her yap and feeling jilted. As I said before, we all lost and only some of us realize it. By the way, when did you start to hate pubbies? Was it after you voted for the chimp twice or only after you feel jilted by Ron Paul? Very seriously christine, I thank you for starting the best forum on the internet today. You too have principles that you stick by and we all owe you our heartfelt thanks.

Was it after you voted for the chimp twice or only after you feel jilted by Ron Paul?

i woke up regarding the two party fraud two months into chimp's presidency when i realized he and the rest of the republicans had no intention of pursuing the vote scam of election 2000 which, i believed at the time, was perpetrated only by the Ds. i read the book "Votescam; The Stealing of America" which sealed my disdain and distrust of the entire system. i have not voted since then and, in fact, purged my vote card.

i would have had to re-register to vote for Ron Paul had he gone to the end.

i don't feel bitter about my donations to Ron Paul. i have been a long time supporter and donator to his LibertyCaucus.

You must have had a change of heart because you told me you were mad at him for dropping out and not requwsting a vote recount in New Hampshire. Or you were last year! You cast up your donations to his campaign back then too unless I was talking to another or different christine on forum.

It wasn't so much that RP dropped out. He didn't put up a fight. He's a nice man, with a good message, but he isn't the right messenger.

You see any 'right' messenger on the horizon with the 'right' message? They would almost have to be from an independent party and have mega bucks of their own. I don't see that happening in my lifetime. Ron Paul was the best so far.

That doesn't change the fact she is a neo-con, an airhead, and an israhelli firster and willing to do the bidding of TPB. Enough said!
