June 23, 2009 -- Updated 0312 GMT (1112 HKT)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A former commanding general of the District of Columbia National Guard -- who ordered jets over the Capitol amid the September 11, 2001, terror attacks -- was among those killed in a transit train crash in Washington this week, authorities said Tuesday. The crash killed retired Maj. Gen. David Wherley Jr., ex-leader of the D.C. National Guard, and his wife, Ann.

The crash killed retired Maj. Gen. David Wherley Jr., ex-leader of the D.C. National Guard, and his wife, Ann.

Retired Maj. Gen. David F. Wherley Jr. and his wife, Ann, both 62, were killed along with seven others Monday in the most deadly train crash in the history of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority.

"He was as fine a public servant, as dedicated to the United States of America ... as anyone I have ever met," Washington Mayor Adrian Fenty told reporters Tuesday.

On the morning of the September 11 attacks, Wherley, commander of the 113th Fighter Wing at Andrews Air Force Base, deployed pilots with orders from then-Vice President Dick Cheney to protect the White House and take out any aircraft that threatened the Capitol, according to the 9/11 Commission Report.

"They said challenge them, try to turn them away; if they don't turn away, use whatever force is necessary to keep them from hitting buildings downtown," Wherley told the Washington Post in a 2002 interview.

Wherley, a 40-year military veteran, served as the commanding general of the D.C. Guard from 2003 to 2008.

"I am personally grieved by this unbelievable tragedy," said Maj. Gen. Errol R. Schwartz who succeeded Wherley when he retired. Photo See pictures of crash site »

The Wherleys are survived by a son, David, a noncommissioned officer in the U.S. Army Golden Knights; a daughter, Betsy; and one grandchild, according to the National Guard.

The seven others killed in the collision were: train operator Jeanice McMillan, 42, of Springfield, Virginia; Mary Doolittle, 59; Lavanda King, 23; Veronica Dubose, 26; Cameron Williams, 36; and Dennis Hawkins, 64, all of Washington; and Ana Fernandez, 40, of Hyattsville, Maryland. (1 image)

Investigators to look at 'anomalies' in track circuit

Debbie Hersman of the National Transportation Safety Board says five of six circuits, or stretches of track, in the area showed no problems during tests Wednesday. But she says there were anomalies with the sixth circuit. Hersman would not elaborate on what those might be, saying more tests are needed.

(Translation: "Maj. Gen. David F. Wherley Jr. had recently sought out a priest and apparently confessed some secret that was troubling him, or engaged in some other behavior that alarmed the primary beneficiaries of 9/11 such as mentioning that he's writing a book.)

There will never be so much redundancy of mechanical/electronic safeties built into air, rail or motor vehicle travel that pain in the ass whistle blowers, guilty consciences or recent religious light seekers can't die in tragic "accidents".

Knowing TOO MUCH in THE USA is often HAZARDOUS TO YOUR HEALTH.

Great bumper sticker and tee shirt wisdom, right up there with "CONFUCIUS Says"

I've watched the dirty bastards pull some amazing shit in my life and between the things that Armen Condo, Irwin Schiff and Red Beckman have told me first hand I'm convinced that truth, honor, ethics and even the swearing in of witnesses are mere tools used to control us.

They'll lie faster than a pony can trot and laugh at us for being so easily manipulated.

That's why I tell everyone summoned for jury duty to pick the govt's "best witness" and then say, "I think he (or she) lied!", and then hang the jury! It doesn't matter if it's true, all that matters is, you said it!

And, if the witness happens to be a priest or some Prot preacher or a high ranking cop, old maid Sunday school teacher or politician then all the better! There's nothing funnier than watching them flap their wings and sputter at the mere suggestion that their "unimpeachable witness" is a lying sack o'shit! Just pick the one that will cause the most irritation and agita!

"Do you believe that juror number nine? He thinks that The Adjutant General of The National Guard and The Chief of the Army Chaplain Corps, Rabbi Goldstein both lied on the stand!!!! There ought to be a law against these rogue jurors deciding who and what they want to believe!!!!! I mean, judges always believe us cops and our hand picked groupies and supporters first so why should the outcome be different in a jury trial???

HAH!

You're right of course.

I've gotten so cynical over the years that I sometimes forget that these endless deaths of convenience are tragic and painful, especially for the survivors of those who actually believed in govt service.

I can imagine how so many former friends of the Clintons must feel now.

Your screen name says as much.

When I think of all of the souls who were murdered by the Pinochets of the world I too am relieved....for the moment.

But at the present rate of political and moral decay I'm prepared to see our country remove the gloves and start filling plastic caskets and internment camps with no pretense of justice or respect for basic rights.
