I don't believe that Japanese sailors wanted to die any more than the reluctant Kamikaze pilots who screamed protests into their radios as they piloted their planes into American ships.
The simple fact is a US sub that picked up survivors was out of action until the prisoners could be off loaded, and the US wanted those subs to sink as much enemy tonnage as possible, not give courtesy rides to enemy survivors.
I suppose turning a BAR or a Thompson on some poor bastard floating in the sea was just doing one's duty then, which helps to explain why the US Govt went to such lengths to vilify the "dirty, sneaky Japs."
