Defense Secretary Robert Gates is weighing a possible temporary expansion of the US army to ease the strain from wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, his press secretary said on Wednesday. Gates was discussing the idea, backed by Senator Joseph Lieberman with senior officers to add 30,000 troops to the active-duty army, press secretary Geoff Morrell told reporters. The possible expansion from the current strength of 547,400 would be designed "to get them through what is still a stressful period as we draw down in Iraq and continue to plus-up in Afghanistan," Morrell said. "So he is engaged in discussions with a number of people about that possibility," he added. Any expansion would be temporary but would carry a significant price tag, possibly more than a billion dollars, army officials said. General Peter Chiarelli, the army's vice chief of staff, has told lawmakers that at any given time about 30,000 Army troops in the current force are not available to deploy to combat missions. About 10,000 army personnel are wounded and receiving medical care, another 10,000 are in training programs and the remainder have been ordered to serve the Defense Department or other agencies and cannot be pulled from their duties.

The 30,000 is very misleading. To expand by 30,000 and...MAINTAIN...that level requires many more than 30K. That I assume is expansion for grunts, not Pentagon paper shufflers, thus to expand we will need at least 40,000 to support and maintain. Obumski has already said long ago he wants 87,000 Army grunts and 13,000 Marine grunts. That is not possible, even in this time of high unemployment.
Absent an 'event' even more horrific than 9.11, there won't be a draft. But I wouldn't bet a penny that it won't happen.
This is just the opening gambit to accustom the masses as to the NEED of more people.
1948, no event, brand new draft and it forced me to volunteer. There was NO WAR. It was peacetime. Americans said not a word, as I and two million other patriotic volunteers charged off to protect the Motherland from someone, I forget now who.
Sixty one years ago, July 20, 1948. "July 20, 1948 Truman issues peacetime draft President Harry S. Truman institutes a military draft with a proclamation calling for nearly 10 million men to register for military service within the next two months.
And 61 years later, we're still over there. What a racket.
Agreed, but notice, it was PEACETIME. To add insult to injury, many of my friends that were a year or two older had to hustle to volunteer to avoid the Army, when their time was up four years later, the government tacked on another nine months, involuntary. So they ended up with 5 years of their life shot to hell for nothing. Of course I fail to mention those that didnt come back, or were killed or wounded, that was just a side affair of a ...PEACETIME DRAFT... Oh yes I made $72 bucks a month.
This should improve Obama's dismal unemployment numbers and remove many testosterone raging, gun owning, idle handed young males from general populations.........wouldn't want any sort of revolution or civil unrest to foment.
Can any O please tell me one Bush regime program that the Messiah has eliminated or cut? In his short tenure, he has outspent, out warred and removed more personal wealth from this nation than 8 years of Bush. Forgive me Cyni, those bitter small town Bible thumpers can't be allowed to start any militias either. Round 'em up, move 'em out!! Afghanistan and Pakistan and Iraq need secure borders......and you need more soldiers on call as Israel escalates the hype on Iran and prepares to take ballistic preventative measures against yet another perceived threat to their nuclear dominance in the ME.

But I also have read of many Green Card recruits from Latin America. If they do recruit a lot of people, I think they will be either Latinos or black immigrants. The NWO wants people willing to shoot rioters. Though I doubt the sanity of hiring Latinos to shoot rioters as most of the food rioters in 2010 will be either black or Latino.

The draft is helpful in one way, in that it floods the military with men that despise the military, despise the government and cannot be programmed.
It is helpful in another way as well, it combats apathy in this nation that is currently rampant. We'll see more demonstrations, sit-ins, protests and activism like we did when they pulled the draft out for Vietnam.
Perhaps, but I tend to feel that as long as the MSM and the system WANT the draft, and that communism is not at stake, any dissent will be very limited.
A true statement, but not reason enough to ever let them take my children for foreign wars of lies and Empire.
