WASHINGTON (AP) - For all the attention generated by last year's presidential race, census figures show the share of eligible voters who actually went to the polls in November declined from 2004. Census figures released Monday show about 63.6 percent of eligible voters, or 131.1 million people, cast ballots last November. Although that represented an increase of 5 million voters, the turnout was a decrease when taking into account population growth. In 2004, the voting rate was 63.8 percent.

According to the data, more older whites opted to stay home compared with 2004, citing little interest in supporting either Barack Obama or John McCain.

The only way the "older whites" will be able to influence elections soon is to figure out how to vote Cook County-style.

I still can't believe the GOPers lost their world-class touchscreen hacking skills in the few short years from 2004 to 2008.

If anything, the other party was hacking this last one. I find it hard to believe O had a 9.5 million-vote lead (but then again, I hang out at sites like this one) without some sort of trickery being employed on his behalf.

It is not just a matter of money, in fact money rates far down the ladder.

In my time of operating in dirty politics, there was a lesson to be learned, and nearly always it was a bitter lesson. When it comes time to stand up FRONT and be counted, nine out of ten will leave you standing alone. Out of a flux of nearly thirty people coming and going, there was but ONE man I could count on at all times, right or wrong. One man.

That was a bitter lesson about human nature, and to learn it the hard way.

When we won, everyone was there to share the credit, one loving family, every man had sacrificed to the hilt, right over might. When we lost, Gerry and I stood alone, outcasts, unknown to anyone. Bitter??? No, thats the dirty business of politics tempered by human frailties, paramount, you do it, I will be behind you all the way.

Ask for money, their hearing goes south, the kids are starving, times are hard, they just cant afford it, excuses that embarrasses one. Asking for money is the mark of a man, you know instantly his character. The poor man will give you five dollars without whining, the man of means will give you nothing but excuses. I always had disdain for those people and they were the MAJORITY.

Among those people of means you always find the informants or snitches, always there, never fails.

Human nature, good to bad.

I've seen it many times, experienced it a number of times.

Not quite as bitter as you are though. Probably I had lower expectations to begin with. Maybe you were an idealist and started out thinking that everyone was fundamentally good in intentions, was willing to listen, wanted something more than their little rut.

I only ever had one political partner who would go over the top. He really knew how to face down an angry mob of liberal do-gooders trying to raid the public treasury and embark on a reckless half-baked scheme.

Well, I got slickered again. It's always the stupid debates that slicker me. I voted for George W. in 2000 and 2004. I shoulda' stayed home. The debates fooled me again in 2008. I shoulda' stayed home.

Cynics are NEVER idealists. They are REALISTS to the bone.

Bitter??? As I said, NO, not bitter. My attempt was to examine for others, human failings, namely as to what they say they will do, and what they actually do.

Politics is a dirty BUSINESS, populated with a mostly character flawed mix of people. Far too many bring baggage that warps their political life, such as, sex, alcohol, drugs and dishonesty. I met only one man that was free of all of those, and for twelve years he maintained his total integrity.

My own nephew was and is a career politician, he suffered from all the listed maladies except drugs. We ran him out of County office and he is now a judge. I had retired from rousting politicians when he became a judge so remained neutral.
