SENATOR BOB SMITH ON BORDER SECURITY, The paragraphs below outline why amnesty and illegal immigration are morally wrong and patently unfair and I hope you will read it all carefully. However, I want to start off this issue with exactly what I will do to stop it as a U.S. Senator. There will be no vacillating or double talk from me during this campaign and I will answer the questions with strength, passion and resolve, every time I am asked , because that is the way I feel. I spent 18 years in the U.S. House and Senate. I voted 100 percent of the time against amnesty and illegal immigration and I will do so again and again and again if you send me back to the Senate from Florida. But voting and talking is not enough... Illegal immigration and border security are NATIONAL SECURITY issues. Our borders must be secure and our immigration laws must be enforced, particularly while we are engaged in a war against transnational terrorist enemies who want to come to America and destroy us. Ilegal immigration, including those employers who promote and exploit it, is a severe threat to our survival. The United States cannot maintain its constitutional freedoms, its proud heritage and traditions, and a prosperous economy without decisive enforcement of our existing laws. Secure borders, a common unifying English language and our rich history are all fundamental to our national sovereignty. I vehemently oppose amnesty. Amnesty would give an immediate path to citizenship to those who came here and are living here illegally. It bumps the illegal aliens ahead of legal immigrants which is unfair. Some say it is impossible to deport millions of illegal aliens. WRONG! Of course we can do it, if we have the political will and we provide the resources to enforce existing laws on the books that have been shamelessly flaunted by violators and ignored by weak elected officials. I will provide whatever it takes: money, more DHS personnel, support for 287g to partner federal, state and local governments to identify and deport illegal aliens and I would require mandatory E-Verify for all companies. Florida's Bay County Sheriff has done a superb job in using the 287g program. He has also been extremely effective in enforcing related state laws dealing with the criminal use of personal identification and the use of false Information to obtain employment.This successful program could be expanded. Denial of economic opportunities is a proven strategy for controlling this costly problem by facilitating self deportation. There is no reason why we cannot find other creative solutions for federal-state-local enforcement partnerships. I would work to pass federal legislation that would preclude illegal aliens from collecting benefits that should only be reserved for American citizens. Employers will be required to verify that workers are LEGAL or pay penalties for hiring. I will hold the politicians "feet to the fire" to enforce the laws and not look the other way as illegal aliens enter our country, take our jobs and suck up our hard earned tax dollars. If we need more laws to get it done, then I will introduce more laws. The bottom line is that I will provide LEADERSHIP in the U.S. Senate on this issue, You have my solemn commitment on that! LEGAL IMMIGRATION BUILT AMERICA AND ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION MUST NEVER BE ALLOWED TO TEAR HER DOWN My daughter, who lives in New York City. recently sent me a photo of my two year old grandson pointing to the long list of names of immigrants inscribed at the base of the Statue of Liberty. He was pointing to names that were his ancestors. Men and women who came here legally and helped to build this great country.Many immigrants came to our shores with nothing but the shirts on their backs and worked hard to live the American dream. Yet today that dream is being mocked by the shameful acts of politicians who promote jobs for illegal aliens,ask taxpayers to provide them benefits and services and then have the audacity to support amnesty for those who violated our borders! These actions are immoral, unconstitutional and a direct threat to the survival of our nation. COSTS TO TAXPAYERS AND SOCIETY Despite the fact that recent polling shows that opposition in America is as high as 87 percent, the battle over illegal immigration and amnesty has been raging in this country for the past several decades. Any reasonable, fair minded American knows full well that giving instant "citizenship" to 20 to 30 million illegal aliens, and moving them ahead of those patiently waiting in line for years, is totally unfair and flat out wrong . An even bigger outrage is to let them stay here and take jobs away from Americans and receive benefits and services paid for by U.S. taxpayers. Costs for the taxpayers of Florida were estimated at $3.8 Billion last year to educate, medicate, incarcerate and provide social services for illegal aliens. At a time when our citizens are struggling to make house payments and put food on the table, they should not have to bear the burden of the costs of those who are not even citizens. In addition to the fairness issue and the job losses and taxpayer costs, there is another reason that Americans should be concerned. Society pays a heavy price in other more personal ways. Here are some typical examples: 1. Thomas Unger died and his wife, Tara was seriously injured in an automobile crash on Route 75 near North Port, Florida in 2007. The driver was an illegal alien who was driving drunk with a previous DUI conviction in Collier County! 2. In testimony in favor of immigration control bills before the legislature in Tallahassee in 2008 a hospital administrator named Carol Plato shocked everyone with her story. An illegal alien had been in her hospital for two years at a cost of nearly two million dollars to the hospital, until a federal court order was finally given to deport the patient. The hospital paid $30,000 to fly him home to Guatemala in a special medically equipped aircraft. His relatives in West Palm Beach who refused to accept and care for him are now suing the hospital, costing that care facility hundreds of thousands in legal fees just to defend itself! 3. An illegal alien in Texas earlier this year was convicted of sexual assault for raping a 23 month old baby! 4. A person in Ft. Myers was stabbed to death by an illegal alien on Christmas morning a few years ago. In any of the above incidents the perpetrater could have been an American citizen. Those crimes happen to us and we are frequently victimized by our fellow citizens. However, we should not have to be victimized by those who are not supposed to be here in America! Had these illegal aliens not been in this country, these people cited above would not have been victims. Why is this happening? The answer is really very simple. Politicians lack the will to stop it. Some refuse to take a strong stand due to ethnicity concerns and others are pandering to the potential of illegals suddenly getting the right to vote. We must challenge all candidates and office holders to not merely say. "I oppose amnesty." "I am against illegal immigration ." "It is sad to hear about these victims of crimes by illegal aliens." We must make them tell us what they are going to do about it. Read the first paragraph above and I tell you what I will do. Finally, we have a guy running for the U.S. Senate who is against amnesty and for deporting 20 - million illegal aliens, themn the could save billions of dollars wasted on lawbreakers, drug dealers and others who steal Americans jobs, services that we also waste yearly on our taxed.
