WASHINGTON -- The Senate is expected to vote today on a controversial measure that would force New York to honor concealed-weapon permits from other states -- touching off outrage from Mayor Bloomberg and other leaders. Critics are warning the vote could be close.
The amendment, introduced by South Dakota Republican John Thune, would force police departments in states and localities with restrictive gun laws, like New York, to recognize gun permits obtained in states with less restrictive laws, such as Vermont.
"There will be needless suffering, injuries and deaths if this amendment is passed," warned Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY).
Under the rules agreed to for the amendment, it would need 60 votes to pass. Many Democrats, including Sen. Majority Leader Harry Reid, from pro-gun Nevada, are expected to vote for the measure.
"It's going to be very close," Schumer warned.
Bloomberg railed against the legislation in a conference call with reporters yesterday.
Asked what it would mean for New Yorkers, Bloomberg said, "Your life and your family's lives are at stake.
"The person sitting next to you on the subway, bumping into you on the street, staggering out of a bar after too much to drink . . . The likelihood of them carrying a concealed weapon is much greater [if the measure becomes law]."
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, once a darling of the National Rifle Association when she served in the House, announced she would oppose the amendment.
Gillibrand, a Democrat, received an "A" grade from the NRA during her two years in the House, and once voted to repeal gun laws in Washington, but aides insisted yesterday that her record on guns is consistent.
"She would have always voted against this amendment, because it pre-empts states laws," said her spokeswoman, Bethany Lesser.
