Michigan Police Chiefs Admit Speeding Tickets Are About Money

Posted in Newsworthy, Politics, Roads, Safety, Scandal, Traffic by Vito Rispo · 29 opinions voiced

In 2002, police in the city of Detroit gave out a total of 126,007 traffic tickets. Last year, the number of tickets grew to over 245,000 51; a 94% jump. The increase was even larger in small towns like Plymouth which saw the number of tickets go up from 440 to 2,500 52; up 480 percent 52; over the same amount of time. According to Detroit area police the reason for the increase is dwindling property tax revenue. That lack of property tax revenue has forced local governments in Michigan to use average citizen drivers to fill the coffers. You might call it a new, 60;random driving tax.61;

60;When I first started in this job thirty years ago, police work was never about revenue enhancement,61; Utica Police Chief Michael Reaves told the Detroit News. 60;But if you57;re a chief now, you have to look at whether your department produces revenues. That57;s just the reality nowadays.61;

The National Motorists Association pointed to Detroit suburbs as home to some of the worst speed traps in the entire country. Upwards of 18 jurisdictions in the area reported an increase in ticketing of more than fifty percent.

60;When elected officials say, 56;We need more money,57; they can57;t look to the department of public works to raise revenues, so where do they find it? Police departments,61; Police Officers Association of Michigan President James Tagnanelli told the News.

60;I57;ve spent eight years in traffic services, and I was a crash reconstructionist for five years before that,61; Michigan State Police Lieutenant Gary Megge told the News. 60;So I57;ve seen my share of fatal wrecks, and I can tell you: Deaths are not caused by speeding. They57;re caused by drinking, drugs and inattentiveness. The old adage that speed kills just isn57;t realistic. The safest speed is the speed that is correct for that roadway at a given time. A lot of speed limits are set artificially low.61;

The Michigan State Police promotes setting limits according to the 85th percentile rule. This widely used principle is used to determine a practical speed limit by measuring how fast the vast majority of traffic, 85 percent, travel in safety.

60;It just doesn57;t seem right to me that we would enforce a law where 90-98 percent of the people are in violation of it,61; Lieutenant Megge told the News. 60;It57;s not the way we should do business in this country.

Cops as much as I hate them do serve a legitimate function in society. As long as they aren't abusing that authority.

They've been abusing their authority on a daily basis for decades now. That, or they're incompetent and just drive around on their shift avoiding the world.

no, it's not. it just happened this evening. they were talking about it on RBN. all we know is that he intervened on behalf of an individual who was being harrassed by cops. i guess they did an ID on him and discovered he had a suspended license. so they arrested him and took him to jail.

John Stadtmiller was arrested for Expired/Suspended drivers license which he had taken care of over a month ago. Just 30 minutes after his show today, July 23, 2009, He stopped to see what police were doing to another driver as they were taking property out of the car, this is when they noticed John, about 150 feet away, and decided to question him.John is being held by Williamson County Jail which can be contacted at this number:

Rule #1. Never voluntarily "engage" the police..for anything.

The police are NOT your friends. At this late date they are Enforcers (and all that usage implies) not Peace Officers.

I trust the average street cop about as far as I can throw WTC 7.

I'm sure there are some good ones, some decent ones, but they are compromised by belonging to a Racketeer Influenced Corrupt Organization.

You'd better have a good witness, and preferably a videocam. Hopefully your witness is well connected to the top of the government mob. Otherwise your ass is grass.

Don't try it at all without a witness or two as they'll just set you up and then "drop a bag" on you, and then you, you filthy doper, are BUSTED.

i just spoke to Sandra. she's at the attorney's office. he had spoken to john so she had to hang up. she said she'll call me later. here's what happened. this cop knew who john was because xmas eve a year ago, he had pulled a woman over in the parking lot of RBN studio. john went out to inquire as to what was going on. he asked if he could give the woman a break since it was xmas eve. the cop told john one more word out of you and you're going to jail. john went inside and called his superior to tell him he had an out of control officer.

last night's incident involved another young woman. the cop was searching her car and removing seats and personal property. john pulled into the parking lot to observe. he was at least 150 ft away. obviously, the cop recognized him and came over to him. he apparently did a DL check. it's true that john had resolved this issue back in may. maybe there was a glitch in their system. who knows. anyway, on the way to the jail this cop asked john if he had any suicide thoughts. john answered no. he then asked john if anyone close to him had died recently. john told him about his friend and radio talk show host, Alan Stang. then because of this conversation, they put john on SUICIDE WATCH.
