Harvard Scholar, Henry Louis Gates, was arrested on his front porch on July 16th by police responding to a call from witnesses reporting a possible break-in at a residence in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It seems Mr. Gates and another man had to use force to gain entry through a jammed door – be it his own.

Apparently, he would not have been arrested and charged with “disorderly conduct” had he simply cooperated with police and shown some identification – something an officer must have upon arrival at a potential crime scene in order to make sure the parties involved are indeed who they claim to be. For an officer to simply assume someone at a potential crime scene is not the perpetrator would be careless, irresponsible and dangerous for everyone involved. Verifiable identities must first be established.

Gates not only refused to cooperate with officers investigating, but also became belligerent in his objections to their request for identification, reportedly getting “loud” and “tumultuous” with police – calling their demands “racial profiling.” Mr. Gates, you see, is an African-American and the arresting officer is not.

The fact that Barack Obama commented on the incident at a Wednesday news conference, saying that police “acted stupidly,” seemed rather odd to me, bringing to mind another controversial identity issue in the news: Obama’s own refusal to provide a copy of his original long-form, hospital-generated, birth certificate to prove his American citizenship – something every candidate for president must do to satisfy the Constitutional requirement of being a “natural born citizen.”

To simply assume that he is, just because he claims to be, would also be careless, irresponsible and dangerous for everyone involved. If it is eventually discovered that he is not a natural born citizen, then everything he has signed into law, every Executive Order he has given and every appointment he made as the President of the United States of America would instantly become invalid and we would have a national crisis on our hands.

You see, Obama’s “Certificate Of Live Birth,” which is posted online, is not the same thing as an original long-form birth certificate – something every American citizen must provide a copy of to get, among other things, a driver’s license, passport or handgun carry permit. Not only has Obama refused to provide a copy of his original birth certificate, he has also reportedly spent millions of dollars in legal fees trying to prevent its release to the public – that is, assuming he has one.

This reminded me of the African-American woman I wrote about in January who refused to pay her rent, telling the landlord, “We have a new president now and some things are going to change” – and political activist, Donna Brazile, also an African-American, who, when playfully questioned on live television by ABC News anchor, Charles Gibson about whether or not her stealing the fleece blanket from Obama’s chair at his swearing-in ceremony was a felony or misdemeanor, responded: “We have a black president – it’s neither.”

So, I’m left to wonder: Is it because “we have a black president now” that Mr. Obama doesn’t have to provide Americans a copy of his original birth certificate? Legally, it would appear that we don’t really have one until he does – or would that Constitutional requirement also be considered “racial profiling”?

Harvard Scholar, Henry Louis Gates,

This story starts out with a misnomer, and then fails to tell us what scholarly field this gentleman excels in.

Remember Chief Moose?????? He had a PHD in community relations, or some such.

Sure I remember Moose - he was Police Chief here before he was in Virginia. He had to "git outta town" because he was a black racist and went off on a white female clerk at Nordstroms. After it made it into the local press a lot more came out on his racist attitudes and behavior, as well as his incompetence, and he had to look for another job. He was an affirmitive action Chief whose only qualification was being black with a liberal Mayor (Vera Katz from NYC - nuff said).

Moose Bio Excerpt From Answers.com

Became Head of Portland Police

When Moose moved to Portland to begin his new career in 1975, he also started a family with his first wife, Linder Moose. The couple's first son was born that year and a second son followed in 1980. Moose's first marriage ended in divorce shortly thereafter and he subsequently married for a second time, to Sandra Herman, becoming stepfather to her son, Lincoln Herman. In 1997 Moose's youngest son was arrested in Portland and charged with dealing crack cocaine. Despite the personal pain caused by the arrest, Moose praised the arresting officers for carrying out their duties even after they learned they had arrested the chief's son.

In his first years on the Portland Police Department's force, Moose worked as a patrol officer and was often assigned to undercover work. One of his biggest investigations contributed to the arrest of a forty-member stolen-goods ring that operated in Portland, a feat that earned him and his fellow officers a segment on the 60 Minutes news program. Moose was promoted to the rank of sergeant in 1981 and lieutenant in 1984. In 1991 he became the captain of Portland's North Precinct and the following year advanced to the position of deputy chief. In 1993, after eighteen years with the Portland Police Department, Moose was named its chief, making him the first African American to hold that title. By that time he had also earned a master's degree in public administration from Portland State University as well as a doctorate in urban studies and criminology from that institution. For his dissertation Moose wrote The Theory and Practice of Community Policing: An Evaluation of the Iris Court Demonstration Project, a study based on his work with the Portland Police Department.

Moose's tenure as Portland's police chief was marked by both success and controversy. Soon after assuming control of the department, Moose and his wife moved into one of the city's most crime-ridden, inner-city neighborhoods. The presence of the police chief in the neighborhood helped to reduce the incidence of crime there and aided in its restoration to a family-oriented place. Crime also plummeted throughout Portland as a whole during Moose's time there. Moose claimed that his implementation of community policing, with officers stationed in neighborhoods throughout the city, was responsible for the reduction in crime, although some experts noted that the drop was part of a nationwide trend due to a strong economy and changing demographics.

Among Moose's more controversial moments were a series of run-ins he had with members of the public. In each case Moose exploded when he thought that someone had slighted him because of his race. One well-publicized argument occurred in a store, where Moose thought he was being denied service by a clerk. (My Note: He went ballistic and had the girl in tears.) In another confrontation Moose argued with a colleague who had told him he looked like a gang member because he came to work one day wearing jeans. As a result of his outbursts Moose was ordered to undergo anger-management counseling by his department's review board.
