DC Candle Light Vigil

I just got back from the Cindy Sheehan Candle Light vigil at the White House. It was held on the new marble street between the park and the Whitehouse fence.

I estimate that there about 1000 people there. In front of the White House they stood thirty to forty deep and extended width of the White House. The crowd then curled around to the other side of the string to form a big ring.

To the left the Freepers were demonstrating. They had a big banner set up and it appeared that 14 people were present. People were counting, some counted 12 and some counted 14. Someone was walking in front of the Freepers with a “Draft the Bush Twins” sign.

I was really impressed with the crowd. Not a nose ring or a tattoo to be seen. They were almost 100% middle class types. All were well dressed and everyone I spoke to seemed educated and articulate. It was about 50% people over 40 and about 50% college kids. A lot of people brought their children.

It was very quiet, almost like it is at the base of the Viet Nam memorial. Everyone held candles and Zipporah's “I stand with Cindy” signs. I had run off hundreds of the signs a couple of days before and left them with people to pass out. The people sang the old '60s protest songs like We Shall Overcome and Amazing Grace.

I've been to a lot of protests, both in the present day and in the 1960s. This was one of the most dignified and well done I have ever seen. Judging from the quality of the crowd, I think Bush is in trouble.

Way to go CM. I'm glad 4 was represented. I have to get down there - hopefully this is the beginning of a nationwide movement.

From your lips to god's ear. I was going to go over after work and shame some of my old friends (the 12 to 14 goofs), but with 5 1/2 hours to kill between work and Cindy's vigil I decided to wait untill Cindy comes to DC.

Thanks for posting this and getting the fliers out there.

The Freepers were absolutely vicious. People couldn't even walk in front of them without being called out. They were so mad they were hissing and spitting when they spoke. Most were in their late twenties or early thirties and all seemed to be fat and creepy looking.

I bet the big protest planned for September 24th will be a huge success. I was told the Sheehan will speak there.

Apparently there were other vigils in Dupont and in Virginia. I heard that there were four in the area in all. The one at the White House broke up promptly at 9:00 so I think this was a permit thing. Judging by this, I didnt' try to make it to Dupont to see what was going on. I figured it would be over by the time I got there.

The threads on FR and LP alone would be worth it. Go ahead BOTs, scream for the elite to mow down the blue collor protestors in the streets some more.

I do hope someone will start taking digital pictures at the rally's. WE need shots of both sides so we can get a good look at the numbers each side is fielding and to prevent "re-invention" of the headcount by the BOTs.

I was thinking we should maybe reserve a suite at one of the residence Inns. Everyone who wanted to come could bring a sleeping bag and stay there. People could cook in the kitchen. There are also really nice campgrounds up on the Patomic near Seneca along River Road. People could stay there and then car pool in. You might cross over to Leesburg and drive down to West Falls Church and then metro in to the mall.

Shady Grove is really far out. My sister found one on the south side of the mall for about the same price and it's possible to walk to the mall - a little far, but possible. What this means is that if you want to stay late or get home quick you can take a zone cab home for five to eight bucks.

As I said above, they were really sullen and hostile. Really, really nasty. Visibly nasty. I thought they made a bad impression. But there were only 12 to 14 so it didn't make that much of a stir. Some fat broad was running around photographing all the Sheehan supporters. I guess she was going to send the photos to the feds.

That sign was the most popular one there. Some had it on only 1/2 of an 8 by 11 paper and some had it landscaped on the whole page. Everyone was holding it up with their candle.

It's amazing, I used to hear them talk about the assholes they ran into during various protests and we mocked this kind of behavior.

DC Chapter After Action Report TURN ON YOUR NEWS!

Posted on 08/17/2005 7:04:56 PM PDT by StayAt HomeMother

Y’all might want to watch your local / national 10 and 11 pm news for tonight’s FReep in front of the White House.

(Mod – please allow this to stay in “Breaking News” for an hour or so.)

Kristinn just called as they were wrapping up. Here is his phoned-in report:

There were about 300 of “them” and 18 of “us.”

We started out in front of the Andrew Jackson statue facing H Street, but the Park Police sent us on our way because we did not have a permit.

We moved to in front of the White House on Pennsylvania Ave and set up the MOAB. For a picture of this banner see: "4-Corner FReep of Code Pink's Quagmire at Walter Reed, Aug 12 (Heavy graphics, Join us Aug 19!)"

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1465323/posts

“They” left their location and followed us. “They” were “ticked off” by our presence and one of “them” asked, “How come you FReepers always have the big signs?” Kristinn replied, “We’re good, man, we’re good.”

They (the lefties and the media) wouldn’t leave us alone. The police had to tell everyone to pipe down.

That was ironic because “they” were supposed to be having a silent vigil. They sang their old 60’s protest songs and chanted such original sayings “No Blood For Oil.”

We had lots of flags – Kristinn saw only two of “them” holding a couple of small American flags.

“Andy” came tonight (see the Walter Reed After Action Reports for more about her.) Also on our side tonight was Kevin Pannell, the Vet who lost both his legs in Iraq. (Again, see last Friday’s AAR for a picture of him.)

One woman showed us a picture of seven relatives in uniform with the eighth relative, a woman, soon to join them. She said, supporting the FReepers,“This is why you are out here tonight.”

{This is the end of what Kristinn reported to me staying here at home. They’ll report in as they get home.}

The crowed was in the shape of one of those Texas cow horn things with the thickest part up against the White House fence. The two "horns" then wrapped around the street towards the park. In one corner I counted 500 people. That is how I got my 1000 extimate. It was probably a little more than than at the peak, but it thinned out after it started. Maybe only four hundred at 9:00 pm.

Crawford War Protesters Lead Peace Vigil

Updated 10:17 PM ET August 17, 2005

Hundreds of candlelight vigils calling for an end to the war in Iraq got underway Wednesday in a national effort spurred by one mother's anti-war demonstration near President Bush's ranch.

The vigils were urged by Cindy Sheehan, who has become the icon of the anti-war movement since she started a protest Aug. 6 in memory of her son Casey, who died in Iraq last year.

Sheehan says she will camp outside Bush's ranch until his monthlong vacation ends or he meets with her and other grieving families.

Bush has said he sympathizes with Sheehan but has made no indication he will meet with her. Two top Bush administration officials talked to Sheehan the day she started her camp, and she and other families met with Bush shortly after her son's death.

More than 1,600 vigils were planned from coast to coast Wednesday, according to the organizers, liberal advocacy groups http://MoveOn.org Political Action, TrueMajority and Democracy for America. A large vigil was also set at Paris' Peace Wall, a glass monument near the Eiffel Tower that says "peace" in 32 languages.

As the sun set in Crawford, about 100 protesters lit candles and placed them in plastic cups to shield them from the breeze. They gathered around a wooden, flag-draped coffin.

In Concord, N.H., about 150 people stood shoulder-to-shoulder Wednesday outside the Statehouse holding candles and signs supporting Sheehan.

Karen Braz, 50, brought a pink votive cup shaped like flower petals and a sign that read "Moms for Peace."

"My son is 26. It could've been him," she said, her voice breaking.

Some critics say Sheehan is exploiting her son's death to promote a left-wing agenda supported by her and groups with which she associates. They say scores of Americans, including relatives of soldiers killed in Iraq, support Bush and his plans to keep troops there.

http://FreeRepublic.com, which holds rallies to support troops and to counter anti-war demonstrations, planned to hold a pro-Bush rally Wednesday night at the same time and same Washington, D.C., park as a candlelight vigil there.

"For us the organizers of the vigil are phony-baloney, betraying the sacrifices that those, men and women make in Iraq, by demanding that we pull our troops out now and leave Iraq to go to hell," said Kristinn Taylor, co-leader of the group's Washington, D.C., chapter. "This is a publicity stunt."

Some 200 people took part in a peace vigil in Cincinnati's Fountain Square. Many carried candles, but were told not to light them because of potential harm to the downtown landmark. Demonstrators softly sang "Give Peace A Chance" and lined one side of the square with signs, drawing honks of support from some passing motorists.

In Hawaii, Kalihi Valley resident Charmaine Crockett expected at least 140 people to gather Wednesday evening in the backyard of her hilltop house to light candles in sympathy for Sheehan.

"I'm very moved by one person making a difference," Crockett said. "This isn't an anti-war protest. The beauty of it lies in its silence ... And I never expected it to get this large."

Several dozen people gathered in front of the state Capitol in Madison, Wis., for the vigil there.

Carol Berglund, 56, of Madison, had a sign attached to the back of her bicycle reading, "It's time for peace. Stop the war."

"I don't think we ever should have gone there. I think it's immoral to be the starters of a war, to be the aggressors," Berglund said.

He's fudging a little here. I'm pretty sure there were over a thousand of "them" at the start of the rally and there really were only 12 to 14 Freepers there. The press didn't focus on them. All the TV stations used the Sheehan crowd as a backdrop when doing thier reports.
