DC Candle Light Vigil

I just got back from the Cindy Sheehan Candle Light vigil at the White House. It was held on the new marble street between the park and the Whitehouse fence.

I estimate that there about 1000 people there. In front of the White House they stood thirty to forty deep and extended width of the White House. The crowd then curled around to the other side of the string to form a big ring.

To the left the Freepers were demonstrating. They had a big banner set up and it appeared that 14 people were present. People were counting, some counted 12 and some counted 14. Someone was walking in front of the Freepers with a “Draft the Bush Twins” sign.

I was really impressed with the crowd. Not a nose ring or a tattoo to be seen. They were almost 100% middle class types. All were well dressed and everyone I spoke to seemed educated and articulate. It was about 50% people over 40 and about 50% college kids. A lot of people brought their children.

It was very quiet, almost like it is at the base of the Viet Nam memorial. Everyone held candles and Zipporah's “I stand with Cindy” signs. I had run off hundreds of the signs a couple of days before and left them with people to pass out. The people sang the old '60s protest songs like We Shall Overcome and Amazing Grace.

I've been to a lot of protests, both in the present day and in the 1960s. This was one of the most dignified and well done I have ever seen. Judging from the quality of the crowd, I think Bush is in trouble.

Great eyewitness account, thanks!

So there was no one in their 30s there? Or do you consider everyone under 40 a college kid?

That might be one of the signs I got from Zipporah and printed up. I didn't have it straight on copier so about 100 came out with the left hand side of the border missing. It looks like that part of the border is missing in that picture.

They were so mad they were hissing and spitting when they spoke. Most were in their late twenties or early thirties and all seemed to be fat and creepy looking.

Why aren't they in Iraq fighting for their hero? They can't use age as an excuse.

Sept 24th might be something huge and historic. One of those once in a lifetime things to see and take part in. The woman's march the April before last was one of the most impressive things I have ever seen in my life. They had a million people on the mall then. Basically this morphed into a huge anti-Bush rally. Sept 24th might be something similar. THe momentum seems to be building. If it comes off, you owe it to yourself to be there and see it.

My son, Todd, is going to be here in Austin Sept 20-27. He's moving down from Maryland a few weeks later. However, I think he's got plans with some friends on Friday and Saturday. If he does, Bill and I might just come up to join y'all. We'd need to know pretty quickly here as we have to get our airline txs and make arrangements for lodging, etc.

Bush isn't running for anything, so how could he possibly win? Bush is merely a puppet of the elite, like most of our elected officials are. He's insignificant in the true power structure of America. He's a media creation that keeps the attention away from the true leaders of America.

Bush isn't running for anything, so how could he possibly win?

By silencing the opposition. It's actually a very simple concept. Let Bush scare you into staying home, or believing it's not worth opposing him and he can do what he wants.

There will always be a boogeyman to scare you. If commies don't do it, then they'll try arabs. If arabs don't do it, then they'll try a faceless international conspiracy.

Rush and Fox are lying to you now and you realize this. What you don't realize is that they haven't changed over the past ten years. They were lying to you in 1995 too.

For good reason.. soon it won't just be us "traitors" and "the damned liberals" opposing the war, but folks from within Dubya's own ranks.

This has gone so poorly, so fast, that it has the potential to taint the entire party.

With the midterms looming ever closer, you'll see a number of rats beginning to jump ship.

Not for the right reasons, mind you.. but just in an attempt to innoculate their sorry asses against fallout from Chimpy's War.
