I just got back from the Cindy Sheehan Candle Light vigil at the White House. It was held on the new marble street between the park and the Whitehouse fence. I estimate that there about 1000 people there. In front of the White House they stood thirty to forty deep and extended width of the White House. The crowd then curled around to the other side of the string to form a big ring. To the left the Freepers were demonstrating. They had a big banner set up and it appeared that 14 people were present. People were counting, some counted 12 and some counted 14. Someone was walking in front of the Freepers with a “Draft the Bush Twins” sign. I was really impressed with the crowd. Not a nose ring or a tattoo to be seen. They were almost 100% middle class types. All were well dressed and everyone I spoke to seemed educated and articulate. It was about 50% people over 40 and about 50% college kids. A lot of people brought their children. It was very quiet, almost like it is at the base of the Viet Nam memorial. Everyone held candles and Zipporah's “I stand with Cindy” signs. I had run off hundreds of the signs a couple of days before and left them with people to pass out. The people sang the old '60s protest songs like We Shall Overcome and Amazing Grace. I've been to a lot of protests, both in the present day and in the 1960s. This was one of the most dignified and well done I have ever seen. Judging from the quality of the crowd, I think Bush is in trouble.

I was just sick I didn't have a digital camera. I will go buy one tomorrow. I keep spacing it out. They are on sale next door for $99. It's just such a pain in ass to figure out how to work the thing.

I have read that there are the one time disposibles digital cameras now, like the one time regular cameras. I don't know who is selling them, probably Walmart.

Shady Grove is really far out. My sister found one on the south side of the mall for about the same price and it's possible to walk to the mall - a little far, but possible. What this means is that if you want to stay late or get home quick you can take a zone cab home for five to eight bucks.

The 24th is a Saturday. If it's anything like the woman's march it will start winding up on Friday. Should be a lot of fun in Dupont on Friday night.
I don't know any by sight. The peace vigil guy knows them. I'll ask him who they were tomorrow. They head guy seemed to be a blond fat guy with no chin. About 40 years old. He was the one talking to the reporters.
That would be Kristinn, he fancies himself as someone important.

As I said above, they were really sullen and hostile. Really, really nasty. Visibly nasty. I thought they made a bad impression. But there were only 12 to 14 so it didn't make that much of a stir. Some fat broad was running around photographing all the Sheehan supporters. I guess she was going to send the photos to the feds.

That sign was the most popular one there. Some had it on only 1/2 of an 8 by 11 paper and some had it landscaped on the whole page. Everyone was holding it up with their candle.
Sounds like an intimidation tactic.. It's amazing, I used to hear them talk about the assholes they ran into during various protests and we mocked this kind of behavior. I just can't believe how far they've fallen.

The crowed was in the shape of one of those Texas cow horn things with the thickest part up against the White House fence. The two "horns" then wrapped around the street towards the park. In one corner I counted 500 people. That is how I got my 1000 extimate. It was probably a little more than than at the peak, but it thinned out after it started. Maybe only four hundred at 9:00 pm.
Crawford War Protesters Lead Peace Vigil Updated 10:17 PM ET August 17, 2005 Hundreds of candlelight vigils calling for an end to the war in Iraq got underway Wednesday in a national effort spurred by one mother's anti-war demonstration near President Bush's ranch. The vigils were urged by Cindy Sheehan, who has become the icon of the anti-war movement since she started a protest Aug. 6 in memory of her son Casey, who died in Iraq last year. Sheehan says she will camp outside Bush's ranch until his monthlong vacation ends or he meets with her and other grieving families. Bush has said he sympathizes with Sheehan but has made no indication he will meet with her. Two top Bush administration officials talked to Sheehan the day she started her camp, and she and other families met with Bush shortly after her son's death. More than 1,600 vigils were planned from coast to coast Wednesday, according to the organizers, liberal advocacy groups http://MoveOn.org Political Action, TrueMajority and Democracy for America. A large vigil was also set at Paris' Peace Wall, a glass monument near the Eiffel Tower that says "peace" in 32 languages. He's fudging a little here. I'm pretty sure there were over a thousand of "them" at the start of the rally and there really were only 12 to 14 Freepers there. The press didn't focus on them. All the TV stations used the Sheehan crowd as a backdrop when doing thier reports.

If they got 200 people in Downtown Cincy, it's tough for me to believe that only 300 showed up in DC.

Because they're chickenhawks I didn't get anything either. I think I saw something about the 1000 planned vigils here. I just went down to see what was going on and discovered the thing. Usually my email is buried in this stuff but I rarely answer. I seriously think they just invited their best and most active people. This is why the crowd was so good. They didn't want a circus so they didn't put out a general invite. I didn't get one because I rarely respond to their stuff. They have an "active" list of the people who have been putting in time for Sept 24. I think the invite just went out to these people. These people then asked their friends who they figured would be OK.
I say let them try to FReep 100,000 of us.

The Freepers were absolutely vicious. People couldn't even walk in front of them without being called out. They were so mad they were hissing and spitting when they spoke. Most were in their late twenties or early thirties and all seemed to be fat and creepy looking.
