Police Taser deaf man with mental health problems The latest Taser controversy comes from Alabama where a 37-year-old deaf man with learning difficulties was zapped with a stun gun when he failed to obey commands to leave a general store bathroom. Antonio Love was also hit with pepper spray. His family has filed a complaint against the officers involved in the incident. Coming not long after cops in Australia fired on a man carrying petrol and a lighter, who was engulfed in flames, this incident will contribute to the mounting international debate about police use of Tasers.

MOBILE, Ala. — Police in Mobile, Ala., used pepper spray and a Taser
on a deaf, mentally disabled man who they said wouldn't leave a store's
bathroom. The family of 37-year-old Antonio Love has filed a formal
complaint over the incident on Friday. Police tell the Press-Register of
Mobile that officers shot pepper spray under the bathroom door after knocking
several times. After forcing the door open, they used the stun gun on
Love. Police spokesman Christopher Levy says police didn't realize Love
had a hearing impairment until after he was out of the bathroom. The officers'
conduct is under investigation. The newspaper says the officers
attempted to book Love on charges including disorderly conduct, but a
magistrate on duty wouldn't accept the charges.
All deaf people should be required, by law, to wear a "I'm Deaf!" sign on them 24/7/365 in order to facilitate police in their official duties. It's the right thing to do....

Yes, where sodomy cannot reasonably be executed, officers are to employ at least a choke hold or inflict a significant stress position upon the subject so as to cause pain and distress short of organ failure. These officers were derelict.

I suppose this deaf man in Alabama is luckier than a deaf teenager in Chicago who was simply shot by the police when he kept walking despite their shouts (the cops said they thought he was making gang signals).

You meant this as a joke (I hope), but about 20 years ago some social worker from India actually advocated - as a means of making all us temporarily able- bodied people aware of those with hearing impairments - having all the deaf wear a distinct armband with a symbol for deafness. That a-hole was surprised that making members of a minority wear a distinctive armband would have a negative connotation!
