Title: LP NOTICE: Server crash, downtime: donations are needed

Hi guys;

We had a hardware malfunction, and our sysop has jerry-rigged a repair.

One of the fans that cools the system/ motherboard (?) malfunctioned and died. The motherboard overheated and the entire system shut down.

We do not know yet if irrepairable damage has occurred on the motherboard. If we have more crashes we will need to replace the motherboard.

We did do a memory upgrade which should help the processor from overworking, and with that and the jerry rig, it may hold for a while. The memory was purchased a while back but this is the first time we've been inside the facility to have it installed in our server.

I'd like to take this opportunity to ask for donations so if the motherboard crashes we can quickly replace it.

Service calls are $300 for one hour and $125 an hour for each additional hour and an appointment has to be made. Having some funds available for these repairs will ensure the downtime is as minimal as possible.

Since we have not had a decent fundraiser in sometime due to the system instability (our last fundraiser was disrupted after 2 hours) we need to raise money now.

I paid the $425 from my personal funds. If we need a follow up repair visit, we can't depend on me having the funds available from my personal account.

I may or may not be able to monitor this thread as a fundraising thread, as I don't want to keep the thread too active - and crash the system.

Right now I'm a little concerned about ongoing operations until we get the fan replaced and know if the motherboard was heat damaged.

I am sorry for having to ask you all for donations during these hard times. However, we still owe our ISP funds in arrears of about $800 plus a couple months of usage for about $1200 total. They have been very understanding but they have bills too, and we do need to pay them. It's a bit embarrassing to have to ask them for assistance to access the server when we owe them so much.

I hope we can raise about $2000 to $3000 to clear our bills, have funds to pay bandwith fees, and have some funds available for necessary repairs.

Thanks and I'll keep you apprised of our situation as I get more information...unless the system crashes. At that point, you'll know that repairs will have to be made.

Thanks everyone!

There's a huge difference between a diesel mechanic and a computer repair technician. Computer techs are a dime a dozen compared to a factory trained diesel mechanic.

I'll have to take your word for that. I know more diesel mechanics than I do computer technicians.

"Ashkenazim generally do well in IQ tests, scoring 12-15 points above the mean value of 100..."

Of course, this fails to take into account jew's natural predilection for cheating, but the eggheads had to omit that for PC.

Ashkenazi levels of real world accomplishment are impressive and thus support the IQ studies.

Yes, Bernie Madoff, Alan Greenscam, Ben Bernanke, Jonathan Pollard, Larry Franklin, the Rosenbergs, Timmy Geithner, Goldman-Sachs, Lucky Larry, etc. Yep, impressive.

"A team of scientists at the University of Utah has proposed that the unusual pattern of genetic diseases seen among Jews of central or northern European origin, or Ashkenazim, is the result of natural selection for enhanced intellectual ability. The selective force was the restriction of Ashkenazim in medieval Europe to occupations that required more than usual mental agility… Ashkenazic diseases like Tay-Sachs, they say, are a side effect of genes that promote intelligence."

What a pantload. PC won't let them say inbreeding, that'd be anti-semitic. I'd say just about anything published about jews after 1960, at the latest, can be dismissed offhand as government propaganda. Real world experience and common sense doesn't support this high jew IQ business.

Besides, if jews are such flippin' geniuses, how is it they keep managing to get themselves holocausted?

Godfrey Smith: Mike, I wouldn't worry. Prosperity is just around the corner.
Mike Flaherty: Yeah, it's been there a long time. I wish I knew which corner.

That and they had a hand in formulating the test. This test doesn't bother to define intelligence and restricts the outcome to only two narrow fields: linguistics and mathematics.

These tests fail to take into account any notion of common sense. My oldest brother scored a 143 on the IQ test while devoid of common sense necessary to excell in life. He makes a living in the elite "cleaning arts" field these days. He could ace those tests but not balance a checkbook. He's not the lone ranger in this type of high IQ but life skill challenged type.

Friends are people who visit you,and who you visit. You share things and times together in real life. People who will risk their lives for you if necessary and do all sorts of little things for you even when it isn't necessary. People you have more in common with than just political viewpoints.

People on internet discussion boards are just people you are friendly with, not real friends. There is no reason to get your feelings hurt if some you considered to be friends didn't quit LP in outrage and follow you over here. Many may not even know what happened.

I am honestly not trying to be rude, but if you can't understand this you need to spend a little less time in front of a monitor and more time in real life.

Not a bad post at all.

Neither one of you seems to understand what I'm about. I am an activist. I've done rallies at the capitol etc. I meet my internet friends in real life if possible. I do things with them. Many people here know who I am and what I do, not just as farmfriend on the internet.

It is this interaction that has gotten me in trouble though. There was a member of this forum who accused me of trying to garner personal information for nefarious reasons. I am who I am on and off the web.

You don't want to me my friend and just keep it at internet acquaintances, fine. I can live with that. But when I count someone as a friend I hold to the definition you gave for my internet friends as well. I think that is why it hurts so much when others pretend to be friends but really aren't because well it's just the internet after all.

"'It would be hard to overstate how politically incorrect this paper is,' said Steven Pinker, a cognitive scientist at Harvard, noting that it argues for an inherited difference in intelligence between groups. Still, he said, 'it's certainly a thorough and well-argued paper, not one that can easily be dismissed outright.'"

The high average intelligence of the Ashkenazi Jews (essentially, Jews from Northern Europe whose ancestors spoke Yiddish, ancestors of the great majority of Jewish Americans) has had an enormous impact on the modern world.

(Jews from the Muslim world score somewhat lower than Ashkenazis, which leads to a sizable social gap within Israel.)

The Economist reported:

"Ashkenazim generally do well in IQ tests, scoring 12-15 points above the mean value of 100..."

Note the bias in the hypothesis - it is assumed, without proof, that intelligence is a genetically inheritable trait. A hypothesis for which there is no evidence.

Because of that assumed bias then it becomes a "self fulfilling prophecy" i.e., that all differences between population groups can be ascribed to genetic cause i.e., nature not nurture.

As well, at play, is the fallacy of division i.e., that what is true for an individual is true for a group.

One of the known biases of I.Q. testing is literacy level i.e., persons with higher literacy levels have better comprehension of a written I.Q. test and will score higher than those with a lower literacy and/or different vocabulary than that assumed in the writing of the test. A great case study of this was WWII vintage Military I.Q. Tests which used a vocabulary common to city dwellers. Thus recruits coming from rural areas, and small towns, who had a different common vocabulary scored lower, sometimes much lower, not because they were less intelligent but because the test was written in a vocabulary they did not use.

Returning to the article and its presumptions: "Interestingly, the Ashkenazi cognitive advantage seems to be mostly in verbal and numeric, rather than visual, skills."

So, we return to vocabulary and its affect on I.Q. testing. Given that someone with a richer vocabularly is going to score higher than someone of equal intelligence with a smaller vocabulary then we can begin to understand the data in a different light - that of culture. So, I would offer as a counter hypothesis that one could, and in fact must in order to make an accurate measurement, control for literacy level. To ascribe the differences to any cause other than vocabulary, thus literacy level, is inherently erroneous. One can just as easily, and not without merit, assign the differences noted to the particular cultural bias toward or against education and literacy. That is not to say that there are differences in intelligence from individual to individual but to ascribe those differences to genetics is to assume a conclusion a priori' i.e., to a common genetic characteristic of a human subgroup. Differences between individuals are easily observable - we a all know people who are quick and bright and others who are just a little slow (or even a lot slow). And intelligence, raw I.Q. as measured on I.Q. tests, is not the only factor in evaluating the worth, or survival potential, of another individual.

As the article pointed out the occupations open to Jews historically put a premium upon literacy. Throughout Western History one can find that Jews were often used as scribes and accountants. From the fall of Toledo in 1085, where the Muslim rulers used Jews in just that capacity, through the rise of literate Western "Civilization" one can find that Jews were heavily over represented in fields requiring literacy as those were among the few fields open to them. Therefore it became a cultural imperative, a survival necessity, to be literate, and to pursue a literate education. One can find this same trait of prizing literacy common to all of the groups who score high in I.Q. testing as a group. The Chinese, and Japanese, who have for centuries valued scholarship as one of the highest attainments an individual can seek, score highest among all groups. Is this because the Chinese are endowed genetically as a group with higher intelligence or is it because in their culture literacy is pushed almost manically?

A quote I am fond of, and have used before, is that what you see is determined in no small part by what you know. So, if someone "knows" that intelligence is solely and only a genetic trait that is what they will "see". That is what their "knowledge" tells them and their viewpoint is established by that knowledge.

If one goes through this article one can see that there is an underlying and unquestioned premise of Darwinian Selection i.e., that Darwin was right and that it is simply a matter of nature and not nurture, and yet that is not what the data tells us. It tells us that groups that have a cultural imperative valuing literacy score higher on I.Q. tests and that we also know that I.Q tests are as much a test of literacy as they are of intelligence. So, it seems perfectly natural to see individuals coming from cultural groups valuing literacy score higher on I.Q. Tests.

As check on this we should be able to predict that groups that have a cultural bias against literacy would, as a group, score below average. So, is that true? Well we can take the mistaken hypothesis of the "Bell Curve", discarding the conclusion that it is genetic, and look at which groups fare best and worst. The group in America that fares worst are Black Americans, taken as a group, and therein we find a cultural bias against learning i.e., "you actin' white". In fact there is a strong cultural pressure to remain illiterate and poorly educated. Those who do not conform to that sadly twisted cultural bias are picked on, ostracized, and otherwise pressured to conform to the group norm of not valuing education. It is no mystery that with that viewpoint in place that blacks score lower on I.Q. tests - but it is because their group literacy level is lower and thus as a group they do worse on I.Q. tests which do demand literacy.

Q.E. D.

"I think the subject which will be of most importance politically is Mass Psychology...It's importance has been enormously increased by the growth of modern methods of propaganda...Although this science will be diligently studied, it will be rigidly confined to the governing class. The populace will not be allowed to know how its convictions were generated." Bertrand Russel, Eugenicist and Logician

You are most welcome and I in turn thank you for the kind words. It is a subject upon which I have a great deal of interest. I do wish I had a late "edit" function since I caught another typo, and might tweak the wording here and there. However, I wrote it late at night and it shall stand as is. ;-)

Mmmmm I could go for that.

"If, from the more wretched parts of the old world, we look at those which are in an advanced stage of improvement, we still find the greedy hand of government thrusting itself into every corner and crevice of industry, and grasping the spoil of the multitude. Invention is continually exercised, to furnish new pretenses for revenues and taxation. It watches prosperity as its prey and permits none to escape without tribute." --Thomas Paine, Rights of Man, 1791
