What happened to President Obama's comprehensive health care reform proposal in July 2009 resembles what happened to President Bush's amnesty for illegal immigrants proposal in June 2007. Back in June 2007, President Bush's amnesty proposal was met with such a firestorm of opposition that it stalled completely in the Senate and had to be abandoned. Of course, Obama's health care proposal is not completely dead in the water ... yet. The Democrats plan is to go back home during the August recess and sell their constituents on the need for Obama's health care overhaul. Then, they expect to reconvene in Congress in September and get on with passing the health care reform bills that House and Senate committees have been working on. There's one little problem with this plan. Grassroots opposition to their health care bills is growing rapidly. In a health care forum yesterday at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, Senator Arlen Specter (D-Pa.) and Kathleen Sebelius, Obama's Secretary of Health and Human Services, were met with widespread derision, boos, and catcalls when they attempted to sell Obamacare to the attendees. Even though Acorn organizers had tried to stack the deck in favor of Obama's health care plan by bringing in many who favor Obama's proposals, many critical questions and comments were directed at Specter and Sebelius by those opposed to a government-run health care system. Click on the videos below to see just how much opposition Specter and Sebelius got. Although those of us who oppose a government takeover of health care can take pleasure in the growing opposition to Obama's health care proposal with its "public option," a cleverly designed transition plan for an eventual completely government-run system, we must be on guard for a sell-out by certain Republicans. See my recent article, "Reject Health Care Cooperatives -- Trojan Horse for the Public Option," for evidence that Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), senior Republican on the Senate Finance Committee, is preparing a bipartisan compromise which could provide sufficient political cover to enable passage of a comprehensive health care bill with votes from both Democrats and Republicans, but which would still be capable of morphing into a totally government-run system anyway. Here are the videos from yesterday's health care forum in Philadelphia. They are not of very good quality, but with a little patience you'll gain a good idea of just how critical a crowd Specter and Sebelius were facing. I'll include the YouTube headline for each to give you some idea of the topic of the video. How Can You Manage Health Care When You Can't Manage Cash For Clunkers? Update August 4: Another example of a hostile crowd at a Democrat's town meeting regarding health care reform occurred in Green Bay last night. After 300 people filled a meeting room to see Rep. Steve Kagen (D-Wisc.), hundreds more unhappy citizens were turned away. This morning dozens of citizens had to be turned away after 250 had filled a meeting room booked by Rep. Kagen for a similar town meeting in Appleton.
