Kansas health officials Thursday announced the first death of a Kansan infected with the swine flu virus.

The victim was a middle-aged Sedgwick County woman who died of a chronic health condition but had contracted the H1N1 virus. Swine flu may have been a contributing factor but was not the cause of death, said Jennifer McCausland, Sedgwick County Health Department spokeswoman.

Officials also said a Riley County child has recovered from another strain of swine flu, H3N2.

The headline is quite deliberately misleading. This is someone who already was in very poor health and might have died without H1N1.

I have noticed that many of the "Swine Flu deaths" were actually related to something much more serious.

The media is hyping this "epidemic" big time!

54-year-old Jackson County man has died of swine flu, health officials say by Danielle Quisenberry | Jackson Citizen Patriot

Thursday August 06, 2009, 12:56 PM

A 54-year-old Jackson County man has died as a result of swine flu, or the new H1N1 virus, Jackson County and state health officials said today.

The man had the third confirmed case of the disease reported in Jackson County, said Dr. Donald Lawrenchuk, medical director of the Livingston and Jackson county health departments.

Lawrenchuk said he could not release personal or specific information about the man's case, but said he had been hospitalized for "quite some time because of his status."

The man died July 29, said a spokesman for the Michigan Department of Community Health.

As of July 30, 10 deaths were reported in Michigan, according to the state health department.

Lawrenchuk said for every confirmed case, there are many cases that do not get reported. Conservatively, there likely have been at least 27 other cases of swine flu in Jackson County, he said.

Those who become seriously sick or die from the disease typically are those who have previous health conditions that are suppressing their immune systems, Lawrenchuk said.

Most people who have become ill have recovered with out requiring medical treatment, according to the CDC.

Town rallies round soldier family Lee Porter, 30, died in a Surrey hospital last Friday

A soldier from Coleraine, County Londonderry, has died after contracting swine flu in England.

It is thought Lee Porter, a bombardier in the Royal Artillery, is the first UK serviceman to have died from the virus.

Reverend Peter Fleming of Coleraine First Presbyterian Church said the town has rallied around the Porter family.

"Lee was pretty involved in the community, in his work in the Fire Service and with the Army Cadet and Territorial Army," he said.

"He gave a lot of time to people and served in the community."

The 30-year-old died in a Surrey hospital last Friday, two weeks after falling sick. It is understood he had underlying health problems.

2 more die of swine flu

Mohammed Rasooldeen | Arab News

RIYADH: The Ministry of Health, for the second consecutive day, announced on Friday two more swine flu deaths among Saudis in the Kingdom, bringing the total number of fatalities to four.

The first victim was identified only as Abdullah, a 32-year-old Saudi nurse, who died at the Al-Nafi government hospital, located 100 km from Al-Ras in Qassim province. Abdullah was working in a hospital in Taif and was transferred to the region on his request three weeks ago. He developed high fever and was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday following complaints of breathing difficulties.

The second victim was a 25-year-old Saudi youth, who died at the Al-Namas government hospital, 30 km from Abha, the capital of Asir province. He was admitted Tuesday to the hospital for a severe sore throat and a chest infection. He was reportedly a chain smoker with bronchitis, which doctors say could have played a role in his death.

Swine flu linked to Colorado death

An El Paso County woman is believed to be the first person in Colorado to die of the virus. By Jennifer Brown

The Denver Post

Posted: 07/30/2009 01:00:00 AM MDT

Colorado reported its first death linked to the H1N1 swine flu Wednesday, heightening concern about the fall flu season when the strain is expected to surge.

Debra Burton, a 41-year-old El Paso County woman, died Tuesday after being hospitalized at Penrose-St. Francis Hospital in Colorado Springs. She worked at the North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD, at Peterson Air Force Base.

Health officials, citing patient confidentiality law, refused to say whether Burton had underlying health problems that might have caused her to succumb to the flu.

Instead, they pointed to data showing the hospitalization rate for people with H1N1 flu is only slightly higher than the rate for typical, seasonal flu.

Swine flu girl 'was misdiagnosed'

A girl died from complications arising from tonsillitis after being misdiagnosed with swine flu over the phone by a GP, her father has claimed.

Charlotte Hartey, 16, of Oswestry, Shropshire, died in Royal Shrewsbury Hospital on 31 July.

A post-mortem test found she died of natural causes though her father Karl said the coroner told the family she died from blood poisoning.

The NHS has said it is reviewing her case.

Charlotte's family said she was diagnosed over the phone by a local GP on 22 July and prescribed tamiflu.

But her condition worsened and she was admitted to hospital on 29 July. She died two days later.

Changes need to be made... to make sure people don't fall through the cracks, like Charlotte did Karl Hartey

Mr Hartey said: "Charlotte was misdiagnosed. She was diagnosed with swine flu over the phone and treated for something she didn't have.

"She actually had tonsillitis and that led to her developing abscesses in her lungs and blood poisoning as the bacteria spread, which ultimately killed her.

"This was a death that shouldn't have happened. No-one should die from tonsillitis in 2009."

He criticised the NHS policy of diagnosing swine flu over the phone as a "dangerous game".

He said: "It's a systems problem - instigated by the Government. It has to take some responsibility.

"Clearly this call centre approach to diagnosing swine flu doesn't work and needs to be reappraised.

"Changes need to be made... to make sure people don't fall through the cracks, like Charlotte did.

"One life is too many."

'Deepest sympathies'

Charlotte's funeral will be held next Thursday.

Jo Chambers, chief executive of Shropshire County Primary Care Trust, said: "Our deepest sympathies are with the family at this difficult time.

"The PCT is currently reviewing the care given in this case, working with the hospital and GP practice.

"It would be inappropriate to comment on specific details of the case until that information is available and until all test results are known."

Dr Jane Povey, the trust's medical director, said it was important that people diagnosed with suspected swine flu should contact their GP if their condition did not improve within five days for children and seven days for adults.

The Department of Health refused to comment on the case.
