A day after a Russ Carnahan event led to the arrests of five participants and a reporter, University City High School — where U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill was set to hold a similar event on Tuesday– announced that the forum has been canceled.

The school district sent a news release this afternoon stating that the “reasons for the cancellation by the school district are due to concerns for the safety and security of its staff, community members attending the event, and for the students who would be on campus during that time.”

There is no word on whether McCaskill will find a new venue or keep a second town hall forum scheduled for later the same day in Jefferson County.

Either way, its hard not to notch the decision as a signal of the growing influence of the Tea Party coalition, who had succeeded at heckling Carnahan at two earlier meetings.

Although what the move portends for democracy — that citizens can’t gather for a public forum without fears of descending into fisticuffs? — may be up for debate.

The cancelation is sure to raise eyebrows in Washington, where many other lawmakers are bracing for tough meetings during the Congressional break.

Snort.

From the comments at the URL:

Sounds like a convenient excuse for the good senator to dodge her constituents, for whom she has no intention of changing course on healthcare. Notice that there was NO violence at any of these events until the democrats rallied THEIR supporters to counterbalance “the mob.”

News flash, senator, “the mob” are We The People, and running away from us isn’t going to solve your most basic problem, which is:

YOU WORK FOR US!

If I wanted to deny health care to older Americans, I would be scared of town halls like Sen. McCaskill, too!

I think people are upset with the extreme dishonesty of the Democrats who have tried to push through this awful piece of legislation. They tried to rush this through without any public input, and it would have destroyed the American healthcare system in favor of socialised medicine totally controlled by them. Now that people realize that virtually everyone with insurance presently is going to lose it in favor of a government-run, single-payer system, they are hopping mad.

For more info on what the bill really does, read the following article at CNN Money / Fortune Magazine:

These politicians are dishonest, deceitful and should not be in office. We need to work to get as many out in 2010 as possible. (1 image)

Amen to that.

Meanwhile, buckwheat's off to D.F., to try and do God knows what with the NAU.

Amen to that.

I dont know if there a little or a lot of organizing going into this health protest thing, however I wish I were young enough to participate. Numbers intimidate politicians, tghrow in a few rabblerousers and the sorry SOBs run for cover.

Watch in the near future for new restrictive laws protecting the bastards.

I'm going off this week to confront my Congresscritter about why he voted against putting Congress on that plan, why he refuses to read the bill, and how he thinks we can afford this with $2T deficits.

Should be an entertaining afternoon.

"We're looking for [Obama] supporters," said DeHaven of Hoover, one of the event's organizers. "We're not looking for a fight. That will come later, when we have an army."

Locally, our RP meet-up group is sending emails alerting us to when and where our 'reps' will be appearing. The local pubbie organization is doing the same, so it's pretty broad-based from my point of view.

It's just impossible to imagine how anyone could support this travesty of health care.
