One of the first things I did was post links to Irish anti-EU websites on my page...

LOL

I'm curious. Are there a lot of pro-British Catholics such as yourself in Ireland? I ask because it has been my experience that the stereotypical Irishman is either an anti-British Catholic or pro-British Protestant.

Most Catholic Irish don't really hate the British anymore, but are admittedly still skeptical of it's ruling elite. Which, is understandable; after centuries of them evolving into a democracy - they've now turned into a police state under New Labour.

We have plenty of barstool gunmen over here who mouth off about the British when drunk - pay no heed to them.... they never actually seem to do anything about the next day.... LOL

Maybe I'm confusing the attitude of those from the Republic of Ireland with those from Northern Ireland?

There is a difference, obviously, the Northern Catholics are more hostile towards the British than us southerners. And yet, before the peace process, Sinn Fein never got anywhere - the moderately nationalist SDLP got the majority of votes from NI Catholics.

Most NI Catholics I've ever spoken to would criticise the British security forces oft heavy handed measures - but equally; they would criticise the IRA for thier violence.

It's not as obvious as you may think. At least not to this American. The Irish stereotype presented by the media in the movies and whatnot doesn't really distinguish between the two countries.

My guess is the family of the guy I knew in the army must have been from Northern Ireland, because he had a real hatred for the British. if you got him on the subject he'd rail for hours if given a chance. His favorite story was of the priest who was shot between the eyes by the British while serving the Eucharist during a mass. I guess it's a big tourist place now.

Anyway, thanks for the education.

Now THAT'S something Irish people really hate - the way Hollywood and the US media depict us. They can't even get our accents and mannerisms right.. though they seemed to have finally learned what the Brogue really sounds like in recent years. LOL

I have noticed that inability too of Hollywood/US media to distinguish - I remember that TV drama, Nowhere Man where the title character had flash backs about NI and a RUC man in a "Oirish" accent telling him to put his camera away! LOL

I often wonder how Irish ex-pats often seem to paint the worst possible picture of the British in NI, they're either on the run, or know they'll get a receptive audience if they play on anti-Britishism.

NI certainly lagged the republic with tourism - I was in NI in June '07; there was a total absence of B&Bs in Fermanagh - one of the most scenic counties on this island. So, despite recent changes, NI has still a long way to go before catching up with the south.

Anyway, thanks for the education.

You're welcome, I'm trying to be as accurate as possible, but bearing in mind I'm a long way from any of the flash points, I live in county Mayo, so I can't know the ins-and-outs for sure.

Surely you're not suggesting that Victor McLaglen or Ward Bond's accents were fake are you!!! LOL!

Well there was always Maureen O'Hara.

I'm not familiar with them.

True enough, at least John Ford had some sense of accuracy in The Quiet Man, except for the Parish Priest being supportive of a Catholic and Protestant getting married in '50s Ireland.... LOL

Ward Bond played the Catholic Priest in the Quiet Man (he was born in the US). He also played an Irishman in many other movies. Victor McLaglen was in many of John Wayne's movies, always playing an Irishman, even though he was born in England and raised in South Africa.

But damned good Irishmen they were anyway!! LOL! Needless to say, I'm a sucker for old John Wayne cowboy movies.

It's been a while since I seen the film, so I have everything forgotten! LOL
