There is a glitch here somewhere. The link to your homepage when you create a new post looks kinda like this: freedom4um.com/cgi-bin/homepage.cgi?h=884 But the link to a home page from a reply on a thread looks rather like this: freedom4um.com/cgi-bin/homepage.cgi?hid=884 Note the lone h in the post link, vs the hid in the reply link.

It's on Caddo National Grasslands about 70 miles NE of Dallas. That picture was taken on a hunt in February a couple of years ago, I'm looking at a large patch of bottom-land that's been rooted-up by hogs. We saw their sign all over, but we didn't get a shot at one that day. Here's their distribution in Texas:

General Lee and other generals did not have reliable intelligence about enemy troop strength and positions beyond the immediate battlefield. Plus, they were deliberately cautious about their resources, not wanting to squander troop strength and lives. We know more now about what could have been achieved than they themselves knew at the time of battle.

That is not a reason but an excuse. Whose fault was it that their intel sucked? Who decided to proceed in spite of the lack of intelligence? They lost that battle before it even started. It never should have been fought because it was fought on the norths terms, and you do not fight on your enemies terms or on ground of their choosing. Too many good and extremely brave men died needlessly and their deaths can be laid at Lees' feet. .

Most of us are neither strictly "pro" or "anti" British, and we see the North as a complicated mess, which is why southern Irish tend to be only lukewarm about the idea of the united Ireland - we don't want the mess the British caused! LOL The majority of us are against terrorist violence from both sides first and foremost.

There is a difference, obviously, the Northern Catholics are more hostile towards the British than us southerners. And yet, before the peace process, Sinn Fein never got anywhere - the moderately nationalist SDLP got the majority of votes from NI Catholics. Most NI Catholics I've ever spoken to would criticise the British security forces oft heavy handed measures - but equally; they would criticise the IRA for thier violence.
Maybe I'm confusing the attitude of those from the Republic of Ireland with those from Northern Ireland?

It's not as obvious as you may think. At least not to this American. The Irish stereotype presented by the media in the movies and whatnot doesn't really distinguish between the two countries. My guess is the family of the guy I knew in the army must have been from Northern Ireland, because he had a real hatred for the British. if you got him on the subject he'd rail for hours if given a chance. His favorite story was of the priest who was shot between the eyes by the British while serving the Eucharist during a mass. I guess it's a big tourist place now. Anyway, thanks for the education.

Boston is to proud Irish Nationalists what NYC is to nice Jewish people who also proudly think of themselves as dual citizens.. Although The Big Apple has a large and unbroken legacy of Irish cops and firefighters from the beginnings of both agencies, (see NYPD EMERALD SOCIETY) Boston is also well stocked with Irishmen, probably because of proximity to the Canadian border. Some Irish who had legally immigrated to Canada found Boston more lucrative and relocated, The unintended result being ample sources of funds when the IRA needed them. One seasoned IRA guerilla who had fought beside the martyrs could raise beau coup dinero on a fly in fundraiser, and it was probably easier to cross (or jump) the Canadian border as an undetected "INTERPOL person of interest" or even a known combatant than it was to fly into New York and get through inspections. I would say, "Hell yes, it's a Boston thing!" And Joe Kennedy was one of the biggest liquor importers in the US and as you know the Kennedys resided in Brookline (a Boston Suburb) and Hyannis. (on Cape Cod) Years ago some nice Italian folks told me that "Joe Kennedy lined his pockets with the blood of the Irish!", meaning that he used his own to war with Italians for control of the bootleg biz. it was their cynical view that he stirred up Irish pride to turn obscene profits. To suggest that Italian mob bosses were sincere to fight using their own and Kennedy wasn't didn't sound exactly right to my ears, but as a dinner guest in their lovely home I didn't press them to validate their assertion.

In the hospital where Wifey worked in Los Angeles there was one nursing supervisor who wore orange every St. Patrick's Day! Frankly I thought she was ignorant as Hell to "raise consciousness through protest" on an issue of religious strife among people who knew little or nothing of it. (In a health care facility that employed a majority of Hispanics and no small number of Filipino nurses) She was a native born American of English descent, and I had to wonder why she didn't "get it" when I suggested that people like her could be more cause than effect. My experience with Irish, Scottish and British nationals is that most abhor senseless violence and are frustrated by extremists of every stripe. One famous and well respected giant of the pro gun press, the now deceased "Father Of Combat Handgunning" Col Jeff Cooper (USMC ret.) once wrote that the entire populations of (anti gun states) NY, Mass, NJ, and MD should be deported to Northern Ireland. "It would raise the standards on both sides of the Atlantic", he opined.

Now THAT'S something Irish people really hate - the way Hollywood and the US media depict us. They can't even get our accents and mannerisms right.. though they seemed to have finally learned what the Brogue really sounds like in recent years. I often wonder how Irish ex-pats often seem to paint the worst possible picture of the British in NI, they're either on the run, or know they'll get a receptive audience if they play on anti-Britishism. NI certainly lagged the republic with tourism - I was in NI in June '07; there was a total absence of B&Bs in Fermanagh - one of the most scenic counties on this island. So, despite recent changes, NI has still a long way to go before catching up with the south. Anyway, thanks for the education. You're welcome, I'm trying to be as accurate as possible, but bearing in mind I'm a long way from any of the flash points, I live in county Mayo, so I can't know the ins-and-outs for sure.

The ordinary people on both sides would get along if the extremists weren't stirring up the shit. My experience with Irish, Scottish and British nationals is that most abhor senseless violence and are frustrated by extremists of every stripe. I don't really have anything to add to that, as I think you've hit the nail on the head, probably the reason Ireland is a neutrality. Though... recent weeks I do wonder, violent crime has escalated - someone was even stabbed to death in a town about 10 miles from me earlier in the week! I think the recession is, in part, contributing to the recent explosion in crime. That's a Marxist belief, of course, but maybe they get the odd thing right... One famous and well respected giant of the pro gun press, the now deceased "Father Of Combat Handgunning" Col Jeff Cooper (USMC ret.) once wrote that the entire populations of (anti gun states) NY, Mass, NJ, and MD should be deported to Northern Ireland. "It would raise the standards on both sides of the Atlantic", he opined. LOL! It would seem counter-intuitive to many, but, if they liberalised gun laws in NI - the terrorists would not have a monopoly on fire power anymore! The knee-caps brigades would get knee-capped instead.....
