Asked to give a toast before the prestigious New York Press Club, John Swinton, the former Chief of Staff at the New York Times, made this candid confession [it's worth noting that Swinton was called "The Dean of His Profession" by other newsmen, who admired him greatly]:

" There is no such thing, at this date of the world's history, as an independent press. You know it and I know it. There is not one of you who dares to write your honest opinions, and if you did, you know beforehand that it would never appear in print. I am paid weekly for keeping my honest opinions out of the paper I am connected with. Others of you are paid similar salaries for similar things, and any of you who would be so foolish as to write honest opinions would be out on the streets looking for another job.

If I allowed my honest opinions to appear in one issue of my paper, before twenty-four hours my occupation would be gone. The business of the journalist is to destroy the truth; to lie outright; to pervert; to vilify; to fawn at the feet of mammon, and to sell the country for his daily bread. You know it and I know it and what folly is this toasting an independent press. We are the tools and vassals of the rich men behind the scenes. We are the jumping jacks, they pull the strings and we dance. Our talents, our possibilities and our lives are all the property of other men. We are intellectual prostitutes. "

I've given a lot of thought to talk radio's so-called conservative pundits. What fakes they are !!! They "all" supported Bush and his antics until it was too late, so much so that Obubba could actually give them credit for getting him elected.

Most of these traitors bad mouthed McCain while claiming to support him. Their claims were not untrue their support for him was. The talk pundits had 8 years to speak the truth about Bush and refused. By doing this and by bad mouthing McCain they insured the success of the most virulent communist (FRD and Wilson being close runners up) ever to reside at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

Obubba couldn't lose with so much media assistance. And even now when discussing the healthcare reform bill being touted by Obubba, these fake conservatives only point to several sections of the bill as being onerous, and will come out for it when some of these sections are removed. The concept of the bill is what's wrong with it.

Socialized medicine is unamerican not the people opposed to it. The congress of the United States is unamerican and the President is a full blown communist, a charge that Michael medved denies daily. (He would because he's a subversive Russian Jew Communist).

The Bolsheviks have been eating away at our way of life for nearly 100 years. Glenn Beck calls them "progressives", which is a more inclusive term that includes others besides the Jews that really run it. Reality requires using the right definition of these murdering scum and that is that they are communists.

The media "NEVER" utter a word against the State of Israel terrorist STATE. They "ALL" point towards Islamo-Fascists so they can finance the war on terrorism in good conscience while sending their kids to kill and be killed.

I say the media is as much the enemy as the other baby killers that have saturated our government and brought us to shame.

Resolve to serve no more, and you are at once freed. I do not ask that you place hands upon the tyrant to topple him over, but simply that you support him no longer; then you will behold him, like a great Colossus whose pedestal has been pulled away, fall of his own weight and break in pieces.

(from Constitution )

John Swinton on the independence of the press

Variations on the quote below have been misattributed as a response to a toast, by John Swinton, as "the former Chief of Staff at the New York Times", before the New York Press Club in 1953. However, research reveals that Swinton (1829-1901), after moving to New York, wrote an occasional article for the New York Times and was hired on a regular basis in 1860 as head of the editorial staff. Afterward holding this position throughout the Civil War, he left the paper in 1870 and became active in the labor struggles of the day. He later served eight years in the same position on the New York Sun and later published a weekly labor sheet, John Swinton's Paper.

The remarks were apparently made by Swinton, then the preeminent New York journalist, probably one night in 1880. Swinton was the guest of honour at a banquet given him by the leaders of his craft. Someone who knew neither the press nor Swinton offered a toast to the independent press. Swinton outraged his colleagues by replying:

There is no such thing, at this date of the world's history, in America, as an independent press. You know it and I know it.

There is not one of you who dares to write your honest opinions, and if you did, you know beforehand that it would never appear in print. I am paid weekly for keeping my honest opinion out of the paper I am connected with. Others of you are paid similar salaries for similar things, and any of you who would be so foolish as to write honest opinions would be out on the streets looking for another job. If I allowed my honest opinions to appear in one issue of my paper, before twenty-four hours my occupation would be gone.

The business of the journalists is to destroy the truth, to lie outright, to pervert, to vilify, to fawn at the feet of mammon, and to sell his country and his race for his daily bread. You know it and I know it, and what folly is this toasting an independent press?

We are the tools and vassals of rich men behind the scenes. We are the jumping jacks, they pull the strings and we dance. Our talents, our possibilities and our lives are all the property of other men. We are intellectual prostitutes.

(Source: Labor's Untold Story, by Richard O. Boyer and Herbert M. Morais, published by United Electrical, Radio & Machine Workers of America, NY, 1955/1979.)

Despite the misattribution, the quote raises the issue of whether there is not continuing truth in Swinton's remarks, and whether some candid journalist might not be able to fairly say similar things today. Anyone who has associated closely with journalists can hardly avoid finding a ring of truth in such words, and the best evidence lies in the actual product of journalists and how well, or how poorly, it both agrees with and covers what actually happens, especially involving such things as corruption and abuse of power.

For more on the misattribution, see John Swinton - Yes, He Said It, But...

John Swinton appears to have said this 100 years ago
yet things have not changed
Thank you Itistoolate for posting this article
I am so grateful to honest journalist John Swinton for exposing truth

By and large dead on.

"Pills", Viagra Vacation in Pedophile Land, Limbaugh and the rest of the disembodied Lord Ha Ha's of the radio are simply whores, selling the line of schlock they are told to sell.

McLame was set up to be the Designated Loser for the Theatrical Operation which we called an election. Sarah Palin caught on and did not buy into it and thus is being villified and smeared to protect the PsyOp.

Without control of the Media the Banksters and Psychiatrists behind all of this would not have been able to pull off their devastation and murder in the Middle East. To focus on "Jews" misses the point. It is not "Jews" per se but some individuals, some of whom are ethnically Jewish, who are pushing this agenda of Planetary Conquest.

"I think the subject which will be of most importance politically is Mass Psychology...It's importance has been enormously increased by the growth of modern methods of propaganda...Although this science will be diligently studied, it will be rigidly confined to the governing class. The populace will not be allowed to know how its convictions were generated." Bertrand Russel, Eugenicist and Logician

Excellent analysis in your entire post. I was thinking the same thing (above) to myself yesterday during a rare listen/analysis of Hannity's propaganda.

the media is just as honest as their CFR controllers will let them be just like their counterparts inside the three branches of the federal government.

They have been playing the American people for a long time ... sooner or later despite our patriotism we were bound to notice it. Even during the past election the so-called conservative media failed to point out the ties Obubba had to hard core communists.

Obubba's appointments to his cabinet and "czars" are either criminals, commies, dual citizens or hold overs from Bush. If the saying "birds of a feather flock together" still holds true, we have a hard core communist criminal in the White House. Some might say "so , what else is new" ?
