(Dean Favron and Roderick Porter may agree with the Brady Campaign that children shouldn’t have access to guns. Picture source: West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office)

With the recent report of a 10-year-old saving himself and his 8-year-old sister from two home invaders, “conventional” wisdom about keeping children away from guns needs reexamination.

Last Tuesday, the boy and his sister were home alone while their mother was out working. When two men kicked in the apartment door, the children ran to their mother’s bedroom closet, where the boy retrieved his mother’s gun. When the invaders threatened the kids, the boy shot one of them in the face. At this point, the attackers retreated to a hospital, where police arrested them. One of the invaders was released on June 6, after serving “almost seven years in prison for aggravated assault on a Baton Rouge police officer and two carjacking charges.”

As an aside, the FBI defines aggravated assault as:

An unlawful attack by one person upon another for the purpose of inflicting severe or aggravated bodily injury. This type of assault usually is accompanied by the use of a weapon or by means likely to produce death or great bodily harm. For those of you considering police academy, it’s good to be forewarned as to what value the court system places upon your life.

But the distracting buzz is about the child using a gun, especially when the parent left it loaded and accessible. People left comments that children shouldn’t be taught to shoot guns, or alternate realities about how the gun could have been taken by the attackers, or the boy could have shot his sister.

Some states have child access laws, where the parent could be prosecuted for what happened in this case.

After compiling data from the FBI’s Supplemental Homicide master files for 2000 through 2002, it turns out that children shooting children is a rare occurrence. There were 59 incidents where children (age 0-14) killed another child with a firearm. Of these, 29 were due to a child playing with a gun and two were due to other negligent firearms handling (FBI definition). Other circumstances involve arguments and felonies (sad but true that children commit felonies).

This means that of the truly unfortunate circumstances where a child finds a gun and kills another kid, there are an average of 10 per year for entire country. Obviously, that is 10 too many. But considering that 633 babies under age 2 (211 per year) were beaten to death during this same time period, some perspective needs to be maintained. There are already laws against beating babies to death, just as there are laws against killing children with firearms. Of these 31 incidents, 15 of them occurred in the 18 states (about 1 per state) that had child access laws on the books at the time. That means the remaining 16 incidents occurred in the 32 states without these laws (0.5 incidents per state), not the best testimony for child access laws!

Ten of these incidents involved shooters age 10 or less, about 3 per year. Four of these occurred in states with child access laws, still near that 50/50, coin-flip percentage that indicates failure for child access laws. So based strictly upon percentages, this 10-year-old is a hero. Next, we will look at the Brady Campaign’s latest adventure with the “for the children” gambit for selling gun control.

They not only need guns, they need to be taught to shoot to kill...which apparently these children were not.

“almost seven years in prison for aggravated assault on a Baton Rouge police officer

That should have been a $10 fine, just mail it in.

Everything else should have been life in prison.

Someone needs to buy that kid a nice bike, a 12 ga (He could handle it) and a lifetime membership in GOA.
