The U.S. military's top officer says he believes the situation in Afghanistan is "serious and deteriorating."

The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen, said in an interview on U.S. television CNN's State of the Union Sunday that the Taliban insurgency has "gotten better [and] more sophisticated" in its tactics over the past couple of years.

In a separate interview on NBC's Meet the Press, Mullen said the U.S. military is focused on preventing another terrorist attack on U.S. soil and that its current strategy in Afghanistan is intended to disrupt and defeat al-Qaida, the Taliban and its extremist allies.

The Obama administration is expecting an assessment from its commander in Afghanistan, General Stanley McChrystal, in the next two weeks on the current situation there.

Republican Senator John McCain said in an interview on ABC's This Week Sunday that McChrystal's assessment should say exactly how many troops are needed in Afghanistan.

But Mullen said the upcoming assessment will not detail what resources are needed in Afghanistan. He also would not speculate whether more troops are required there.

Both Mullen and McCain said they expect to have a better idea on what, if any, progress is being made in Afghanistan within the next year to year-and-a-half.(file)

He also would not speculate whether more troops are required there.

I see that he is worried about his job if he does that, having just gone through a "surge" and a Big Offensive etc...

They are going to lose, and I don't give a damn. It will help slay the beast that much sooner.

Where's the left anti-war crowd? If ever there was a time to crank up their operations, it would be NOW.

I've concluded their opposition to the war was mostly just opposition to Bush.

With the exception of Cindy Sheehan finally going to picket Yomama at Martha's Vineyard, they are all pretty invisible, satisfied that Yomama is now conducting the war and advancing socialism. In particular, you don't see the old commie organizers running large demonstrations of paid mobs and gullible college students.

Americans wanted war and they shall have it.

They ran Ron Paul off with his tail between his legs, the only man that would have stopped the war.

You might want them to be bogged down for a few decades. The sooner they come back the sooner they enter the municipal police departments.

I know, it's so unfair. And after we helped stage that phony little election for them so they could love democracy and stuff.

Damned ingrates.

Antiwar.com is running their fundraiser now. Many people don't know it but the Left completely stopped supporting their efforts when they recognized and declared that Yomama was no peacemaker and was not antiwar at all, that he had every intention of continuing and expanding war in the Mideast. Scott Horton has done some great work on Antiwar radio too which is more widely broadcast than ever before.

So the small band of genuine antiwar folk (those who oppose the imperial wars regardless of which of the two major crime families is controlling the District) continue to fund them, much as we've supported Ron Paul all these years.

Certainly, we all need to support Rand Paul, Peter Schiff and Adam Kokesh in their election efforts. But we shouldn't forget that we need antiwar.com and LewRockwell.com, now more than ever.
