I find Tolkien and C.S. Lewis to be bores. There is zero humor in all of their books. Even Roald Dahl noticed that in "Matida."

Having said that, Tolkien and Lewis will outlast all their critics.

Personally, I'm a great fan of children's books -- Rowling, Holly Black, Lemony Snicket, Dr. Seuss. And all of them will outlast their critics.

I like hobbits and Gandalf because they smoked pipes and damned if they didn't like them.

I read the Trilogy in the late 60s for all of the above reasons.
