MERCURY RETROGRADE

Murphy's Law

as defined in the cosmos Mercury retrograde

Sometimes, stuff just happens. If you're concerned that the cosmos has it in for you, check the table below to see if Mercury might have been retrograde.

Retrograde Mercury is the most commonly known astrological signature for Murphy's Law ("If something can go wrong, it will"), and is one of the first features intermediate astrology students learn about. Say it to a seasoned astrologer and you'll likely get an amused smile and some delightful stories about how things can get quite unexpectedly unhinged.

Computers crash, software develops unexpected glitches, traffic jams ensue, telephone service snarls up, letters get lost on the mail, machinery breaks down, new projects fail. Ah, yes, the trickster Mercury is up to his old pranks again. In fact, at least three times a year for about three weeks each time Mercury has his way with us.

First let's look at what Mercury retrograde is, and then look at what can be done about it.

Those of a keen astronomical bent actually watch the planets each night as they travel through the zodiac. Mercury, which is only visible just before sunrise or just after sunset travels in a forward direction most of the time.

But three or four times a year, if you care to watch carefully, it appears to turn around and go backwards for about three weeks! Now Mercury really isn't going backwards. It's just an optical illusion based on the relative speeds and orbits of the Earth and Mercury around the Sun.

Here's an easy example. Think of riding in a fast car on an expressway which is passing a slower-moving car. The slower moving car appears to be moving backward, but it isn't really. It's just the relative speed and direction of the two cars gives that illusion. Retrograde Mercury is similar to that.

The apparent backward motion of Mercury is called retrograde, and it has been known and studied in western astrology for thousands of years.

In general the effect of Mercury retrograde is annoyance. Little things get snarled up and a low-grade frustration emerges. Anything involving communications, verbal activity, technology, short trips and journeys, primary education, and siblings can be affected.

While Mercury retrograde usually is in the minor irritant category, every now and then a colossal screw-up can take place.

For instance, the stock market crash of October, 2008, took place while Mercury was retrograde, although in all fairness a large number of other much stronger astrological indicators were also present pointing to a major financial failure. Retrograde Mercury was more like the astrological straw which broke the camel's back.

However, consider the Bush-Gore 2000 American presidential election in Florida. Now there's a classic colossal screw-up, and we can point our finger directly at Mercury retrograde.

For reasons best known to the Americans, they chose to have their 2000 presidential election on the exact day when Mercury retrograde energy peaked, called stationary direct. Oh, my goodness. In the end, after weeks of wrangling and legal battles, George W. Bush was declared the winner. History now records what a mess he made of virtually everything he did for the next eight years, a classic Mercury retrograde presidency.

FWIW, astrologers, too, learned much from that Florida election. For instance, prior to the Florida election I had always thought a dimpled Chad was a good-looking man.

With only a small amount foresight here are the precautions you can take to prevent colossal screw-ups in your life during the next Mercury retrograde:

* If at all possible, avoid signing legal documents. * If at all possible, finish projects which involve communication before the retrograde. * If at all possible, avoid closing big deals during the retrograde * If at all possible, avoid launching new projects during the retrograde * If at all possible, avoid scheduling meetings to make a big decision * Allow extra time when travelling * Backup your hard drive before the retrograde * If at all possible, avoid installing new computer software during the retrograde * Do needed repairs on machinery before the retrograde * Do not hold an election during the retrograde.

This is not to say Mercury retrograde is always a bad thing. Far from it. It is actually an ideal time to do some other things, like:

* Do the follow-ups on a project already started * Wrapup or complete a project already started * Research a new project thoroughly * Catch up on paperwork * Hold an information-sharing meeting * Enjoy someone's wacky sense of humour

To find out how Mercury retrograde might affect you personally usually requires a fair knowledge of astrology (which could take months or years to learn) or a visit to your friendly local astrologer who can check the unique placements in your natal chart and guide you appropriately.

Check the table below for the next few times when Mercury will be retrograde. Note that the retrograde is particularly strong at the very beginning and the very end. These beginning and ending points are called stations by astrologers.

All dates and times are GMT, Greenwich Mean Time, so you will have to do a conversion to your local time zone. A conversion table for standard time zones is listed below as well. .

Retrograde motion is nothing more than an optical phenomenon against the apparently fixed (it is not BTW) celestial sphere that is due to the position of the Earth's and another planet’s orbit around the Sun described by the three laws of Kepler. There is zero evidence that this can produce, induce, or influence events on the surface of our planet.

You said it. The Earth is really flat and even science tells us that nothing is connected and there are not tides caused by the moon and the sun due to some kind of gravity stuff.[/sarcasm]

Mass variations of the Sun itself far outweigh any possible tidal effects on the Earth from Mercury (the solar systems smallest planet – even smaller than some of the moons in our system).

Our own Moon alone would negate any affect that Mercury would or could have on the Earth. In fact, even though there is a tidal interaction from Mercury on the Sun itself (especially in the coronal region), it too is negated by the solar mass variation.

Yes we experience tides on earth (Lunar and Solar gravity effects on the earth's crust and oceans), however, Mercury does not add to this. Not even to our tiny satellites in orbit about the Earth. Jupiter is massive enough to cause some perturbation; Mercury is not.

Thus any speculation that a retrograde period of Mercury would cause a localized effect falls squarely outside of the realm of science.

I see Astrologers use stars and all kinds of “things” to predict future events, however, I have yet to see any evidence of any kind (would violate causality) that shows this to be real. Remember there are three sigma events.

Dr. Tron Mass variations of the Sun itself far outweigh any possible tidal effects on the Earth from Mercury (the solar systems smallest planet – even smaller than some of the moons in our system).--

Mass variations of what? Mass Ejections? Sunspots? Things that come and go on the sun? The planets are not fireballs of superheated energy, they are masses that have a very large effect on each other. Jupiter is the planet that pulls in all the large objects in the solar system eats them up. Yes, that little planet jupiter which has more mass than all the other planets.

Dr_Tron

Mercury does have an effect on the Earth. All planets affect each other in their rotations. All planets are connected and have magnetic effects on each other. Especially Jupiter.

Dr_Tron Yes we experience tides on earth (Lunar and Solar gravity effects on the earth's crust and oceans), however, Mercury does not add to this. Not even to our tiny satellites in orbit about the Earth. Jupiter is massive enough to cause some perturbation; Mercury is not.

Dude, The sun is the largest body that we revolve around. Of course it would have the opposite effect as the moon. As above so below.

Dr_Tron

Thus any speculation that a retrograde period of Mercury would cause a localized effect falls squarely outside of the realm of science.

Maybe your idea of science. Let's see, what have you offered?

Evidence of assertion?

Nope.

Acting like a science teacher in 9th grade astronomy?

Yep. If you want to keep talking to your self that is fine. You obviously have no idea what "science" means, you are only interested in mainstream science and that crap kinda sucks man.

Dr_Tron I see Astrologers use stars and all kinds of “things” to predict future events, however, I have yet to see any evidence of any kind (would violate causality) that shows this to be real. Remember there are three sigma events.

What does that last sentence mean? Is it code?

Dude, NASA uses astrology. They used it in all the apollo launches.

What is that oft remembered quote?

"Millionaires don't use astrology. Billionares do."

You posted that Mercury's retrograde periods have an effect here on Earth. I pointed out why that is nonsense.

No - Mercury does not have any magnetic affect on the Earth. Think strength and distance.

Also reading your reply is seems you got Jupiter and Mercury mixed up reading mine. I already stated that Jupiter has some affect on our Earth Moon system.

The Sun does not have the opposite effect as the Moon. In fact the effect is identical. Sometimes they actually combine producing larger than normal tidal effects. Yes the Sun is the largest body but don't forget that it is also a function of mass and distance.

Also NASA used astrology? - Pure twaddle. I worked with NASA and one of the things I did WAS orbit analysis. I also teach astrodynamics at a major university so I have somewhat of an understanding of these things including the science behind it.

And lastly a 3 sigma is on the edge of a probability curve that can lead people to connect uncorrelated events since those are memorable. Especially over long periods of time.

You don't know what astrology is or how it works so how do you have the idea that you know what it is?

Whatever newton.

I feel more than you might think. I listened but physics tells me Mercury does not affect buying or selling here on Earth.

And believe it or not I do care what you think. You lash out at me on multiple threads because I think you are frustrated. I see it in your posts. And again - I do care. I wish we had not become quite so antagonistic from the start.

My apologies and in the future I hope thing will be more cordial.

Mercury is retrograde from september 6th to september 29th.

Since the 6th I've lost my sunglasses, can't find my cell phone, the home phone is on the fritz, my mail has been late for delivery and the hound stubbed her toe and had to go to the vet.........

Damn that Mercury retrograde!! It's comforting to have a planet to curse. ; )
