Criminalizing Prayer

Written by Rebecca Terrell
Thursday, 17 September 2009 20:00

Two high school administrators in Florida are facing criminal contempt charges in federal court because they prayed at a luncheon honoring private contributors to their school’s athletic program.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) brought charges against Pace High School Principal Frank Lay and Athletic Director Robert Freeman, claiming they violated a court order to keep their religious beliefs private at school-sponsored events. Lay and Freeman may have to pay $5,000 in fines and spend six months in jail if they are convicted. They could also lose their retirement benefits.

The charges are linked to a similar case filed by the ACLU last year on behalf of two students who claimed school administrators violated their religious freedoms. The judge in that case ordered school district officials to stop “promoting, advancing, aiding, facilitating, endorsing or causing religious prayer or devotionals during school-sponsored events.” A subsequent case against a clerical assistant in the same school district was thrown out last month. The ACLU charged Michelle Winkler with civil contempt of the court injunction for asking her husband to pray at an event honoring school district employees. In that case, the event was privately funded, and Winkler’s husband is not an employee of the school district.

The new case brought against Lay involves students, school employees, and a school-sponsored event. Principal Lay supposedly asked Freeman to say a prayer before a meal attended by school employees and students as well as the school’s athletic program patrons. The ACLU claims: “By directing, promoting, sponsoring or otherwise endorsing prayer or religious activity, public schools infringe on the constitutional right of students, parents, teachers and other staff to determine for themselves their religious beliefs and practices.” Lay says that he made the prayer request out of habit. “It’s just something we’ve always done,” he explained.

Sixty-one members of the Congressional Prayer Caucus, including Congressman Jeff Miller (R-Fla.) whose district includes Pace, Florida, have sent a letter of support to Lay and Freeman, stating they are “standing with [them] in prayer and support as [they] face [their] trial … because of offering a prayer.” Congressman Randy Forbes (R-Va.), Chairman of the bipartisan caucus, issued a press released expressing concern that “this case signifies an effort to criminalize prayer in America.”

That whole fictional "separation of church and state" thing again.
When we see how messed up the government and its institutions are, I have to wonder if secularism is part of the cause.

I would say it was.

"If, from the more wretched parts of the old world, we look at those which are in an advanced stage of improvement, we still find the greedy hand of government thrusting itself into every corner and crevice of industry, and grasping the spoil of the multitude. Invention is continually exercised, to furnish new pretenses for revenues and taxation. It watches prosperity as its prey and permits none to escape without tribute." --Thomas Paine, Rights of Man, 1791

Criminalizing Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallow be thy name, thy Kingdom come, they will be done, on Earth, as it is in heaven.

Give us this day, our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, and deliver us from evil, Amen.

OR Om Mani Padme Hum.

Am I a criminal now.?

If the Bible is/was your authority, your "criminality" is a foregone conclusion. It's an instrument of "Hate" - remember?

Give the NWO's ICC just a bit more time.

Well, it is in the case of the United States of America. Secular Humanism is the bane of freedom and liberty.

I used to be a Catholic. I was tought the "Our Father" in a Catholic school kintergarden class. No one told us little kids that reciting an "Our Father" would make us Federal criminals.

But now, I'm a happy Buddhist.:)

No one told us some day MOST of us were considered a "criminal" element by the PTB. Up is down, right is wrong. BTW, the 'Our Father' is the only prayer taught by Jesus Christ Himself.

But now, I'm a happy Buddhist.:)

I'm happy that your "happy," but where's the salvation for a Buddhist again?

As I understand it, "salvation" for a Buddhist is the achieving of "Nirvana", which means that they have escaped from and will no longer experience the suffering that comes with being trapped within the endless cycle of birth, death and rebirth known as "Samsara".

Is the lack of physical "proof" for a Spirit World required?

You dream, and IT appears "real." It's not physical, is it?

If you want "proof" of God and His Power, the magnificence of this mortal world is more than enough. He's given us His Word with respect to Paradise - you realize as one who's familiar with the Faith that it's your choice Take His Hand or reject it.

physical "proof"

The following comments are not directed at you or anyone on the 4um.

I've met too many hypocrites and sinister minded "God fearing" folks who claim that they are true believers of an "afterlife" and christianity, but they really only worship material things.

That's "proof" enuf for me, that they are really evil minded people and only preach and attend services for "show" and don't really believe.

We all have made the same observations...

But why indict True Christianity because sects or individuals have soiled and perverted it, then deceive themselves?

We're all responsible for our own eternal soul.

The simplest and best overlooked criteria for a "Christian's" fate is the repentant criminal's faith in accepting Christ as his Savior. While crucified next to Christ on the cross he was told:

“I Tell You The Truth, Today You Will Be with Me In Paradise.”

Luke 23:43

As you pointed out, this most overlooked example of Salvation, cuts right through all the dogma, ritual, and other man-made bs that we endure.

All we have to do is 'call out.'
