The jump, from an estimated 3,000 to 5,000, comes a fortnight after children - key spreaders of the disease - returned to school. There have been outbreaks at six schools in England, but health chiefs repeated that there are no plans to close schools as it would do little to contain the disease. In another development, two sufferers are believed to have developed resistance to Tamiflu, the anti-viral drug which is the only line of defence to the disease before a vaccine is ready. Experts have been predicting a second wave of swine flu will hit in the winter months following a lull over the summer break, when children were not mixing as freely. Sir Liam said the figures 'begin to suggest swine flu is coming back'. And he admitted: 'We would naturally have hoped for a bit more breathing space before it started again.' There are 143 people in hospital in England, of whom 23 are in intensive care. The total of deaths linked to the virus stands at 67 in England and 79 across the UK. Sir Liam has revised NHS forecasts, saying that between 3,000 and 19,000 will die from the virus - down from the 65,000 worst case scenario outlined in July. The number of new cases have been falling since the peak of 110,000 a week reported in late July. Experts believe a second wave of the disease will be more deadly as it will coincide with winter, when flu is more virulent. Sir Liam said more than 1.3million people had been assessed via the National Pandemic Flu Service for England, with 522,890 collections of anti-viral drugs. Sir Liam said there were no plans to close schools as the virus was circulating in the community, meaning such efforts would have little value. Tests on GlaxoSmithKline's flu vaccine has shown that a good immune response can be achieved with just one dose rather than two, he said. However, Sir Liam said the under-13s and over-65s may need two doses, although research was ongoing. The Health Protection Agency said two samples from UK patients have been shown to have the genetic change associated with Tamiflu resistance. Both were from patients with compromised immune systems. One has been proved to be resistant; the other is undergoing further tests to confirm resistance. A spokeswoman for the HPA said there was no question that the resistance could have been caused by overuse of Tamiflu, which has been prescribed to hundreds of thousands of people with suspected cases of the disease. 'We have seen this in other countries where there hasn't been mass prescription of Tamiflu,' she said. 'The cases are sporadic, and there is no evidence of onward transmission. Bullshit, Tamiflu is and always has been utterly useless. Sambucol (now called Sambucus) is about the only thing that could possibly cure a flu of ANY type.

It's elderberry extract formulated by a virologist, and has been proven to be 100% effective against the bird flu virus. I'm not sure if it's been tested agaianst swine flu, but I would think it would work the same way. In laymen's terms, it not only boosts the immune system response to the flu virus, but it strips an enzyme from the virus itself, making it easier for the immune system to kill. In terms of safety, it's generally safe, except for a small segment of the population which may be allergic to elderberry, although it seems that's more in terms of the bark rather than the berries themselves. The extract is made from the berries, not the bark. Other than that, it is not toxic at all and has been used to make various cordials and liquors. Kinko, you are thinking of wild elderberries that haven't ripened, this is cultivated and harvested at the proper time. In a placebo-controlled, double-blind study, elderberry was shown to be effective for treating Influenza B.[3] People using the elderberry extract recovered much faster than those only on a placebo. This is partially due to the fact that Elderberry inhibits neuraminidase, the enzyme used by the virus to spread infection to host cells.[citation needed] A small study published five years ago showed that 93% of flu patients given extract were completely symptom-free within two days; those taking a placebo recovered in about six days. This current study shows that, indeed, it works for type A flu, reports lead researcher Erling Thom, with the University of Oslo in Norway.[4] Thom's findings were presented at the 15th Annual Conference on Antiviral Research. The study involved 60 patients who had been suffering with flu symptoms for 48 hours or less; 90% were infected with the A strain of the virus, 10% were infected with type B. Half the group took 15 milliliters of extract or and the other group took a placebo four times a day for five days. Patients in the extract group had "pronounced improvements" in flu symptoms after three days: Nearly 90% of patients had complete cure within two to three days. Also, the extract group had no drowsiness, the downside of many flu treatments. The placebo group didn't recover until at least day six; they also took more painkillers and nasal sprays. It's likely that antioxidants called flavonoids—which are contained in the extract—stimulate the immune system, writes Thom. Also, other compounds in elderberry, called anthocyanins, have an anti-inflammatory effect; this could explain the effect on aches, pains, and fever. Elderberry extract could be an "efficient and safe treatment" for flu symptoms in otherwise healthy people and for those with compromised immune systems, such as the elderly, Thom adds. Russell Greenfield, MD, a leading practitioner of integrative medicine and medical director of Carolinas Integrative Health, advocates treating flu with black elderberry, he says in a news release. "It can be given to children and adults, and with no known side effects or negative interactions," he says. "But don't expect grandma's elderberry jam" to ease flu symptoms like body aches, cough, and fever, he warns. "Extract is the only black elderberry preparation shown effective in clinical studies."
