I don't think they had the technology then to measure the minute quantities. I heard the technique explained in simpler terms last night. Unburnt hydrogen from coronal mass ejections reacts to oxidation in rocks such as Quartz forming minute amounts of water during daylight hours. Might explain all that water in the oceans, and why ocean levels seem to keep rising.
