HONOLULU – The Army is allowing the first commissioned officer to be court-martialed for refusing to go to Iraq to resign from the service, his attorney said late Friday.

First Lt. Ehren Watada will be granted a discharge Oct. 2, “under other than honorable conditions,” attorney Kenneth Kagan said.

Watada told The Honolulu Star-Bulletin he was happy the matter has finally been closed.

He should at least spend a year in the brig.

Why?

If he were enlisted I would say good for him.

However, once you voluntarily accept a commission in the military, your life belongs to them.

I am glad he did it, good for him, however NO military can have junior officers deciding when and where they will serve. An Army cannot operate like that.

Once a precedent is set, the future will bring more such men.

It is a difficult line to draw, but when he said I DO, he was automatically putting himself in an awkward position. Years ago I and a lot of others turned down commissions just for that reason. When we did our time, we walked away free and clear, they had no hold on our future.

Yep.

Once an Officer, an Officer until you die, and always subject to recall to duty.

I served with a lot of "officers" that accepted commissions in WW2 to avoid the infantry.

During Korea they were called back, without recourse, and off we went to war. They were a bitter bunch.

I did my four years, kept my head down, refused a commission and walked with a DISCHARGE and no future commitment to the damned government.

You were a kid, but a wise kid.

Really, really solid thinking at that age.

I hated the military and the government. I was used with no recourse. I did my best to keep the personal abuse to the minimum. Being of the lowest social class, one tends to be wise beyond their age, through necessity and self preservation.

Cyni - please stop the lowest class thing.

Class is what is our hearts, minds, souls, and actions.

It has absolutely nothing to do with how much money we have, or not.

Some of the classiest folks that I know, don't have a pot to piss in, but they have class, nonetheless.

Lod...

Was fact. Back in 1930s this country was very class conscious. In every respect, school, church, all social contacts. It was an every day in your face confrontation. Children were never allowed to forget it, your place was always fixed.

When you graduate from school on Monday, a war starts on Tuesday, on Wednesday you know exactly who will go, who will stay home. And you are right. Just hard life for a kid to accept.
