John McCain's 2008 Presidential Campaign Manager and GOP strategist, Steve Schmidt, thinks if Sarah Palin were to win the Republican nomination in 2012 than it would be a disaster to the Republican Party.

On Friday, speaking at The Atlantic's First Draft of History Conference, long time GOP strategist and former George W. Bush aide Steve Schmidt predicted that if the former Governor of Alaska Sarah Palin were to win the Republican nomination in 2012 it would be a “catastrophic election,” according to The Huffington Post.

Schmidt, however, was one of the staff members who picked Senator John McCain’s 2008 Presidential running mate but, nevertheless, he thinks “she has talent.” When asked about Palin’s new book, Schmidt provided his assessment, “I think it may say that I was anti-rogue in the running of the campaign.”

In the end, though, Schmidt thinks she has made millions of Americans fascinated by her, “Just look at her pre-sales numbers,” referring to her shooting up to number one of her unreleased memoir on the Barnes and Nobles website.

“She is someone who has a passionate base that constitutes millions of Americans. But in the year since the election has ended, she has done nothing to expand her appeal beyond that base into the middle of the electorate where elections are decided.” Concluding, “In fact, were she to be the nominee we could have a catastrophic election.”

Sarah Palin has had steady polling numbers throughout the year in regards to a possible run for the Republican nomination in 2012. A CNN/Opinion Research Corp. Poll in February found Palin leading the pack with 29 per cent, while at the Value Voters Summit last month she gained a four-way tie for second place, reports The Wall Street Journal.

Sarah Palin 2012

I don't think so. She'll be another Hillary, touted and pushed but never allowed to achieve.

"If, from the more wretched parts of the old world, we look at those which are in an advanced stage of improvement, we still find the greedy hand of government thrusting itself into every corner and crevice of industry, and grasping the spoil of the multitude. Invention is continually exercised, to furnish new pretenses for revenues and taxation. It watches prosperity as its prey and permits none to escape without tribute." --Thomas Paine, Rights of Man, 1791

No, not anti-rogue. Rouge.

Redneck vs. cop: Redneck. Cop vs. n-word: Cop. n-word vs. white guilter: n-word. Being a lawyer knocks you down a peg, so redneck lawyer vs. cop and n-word lawyer vs. white guilter are toss-ups. White guilter lawyers are the lowest form of life.
Open season on them.

What amazes me is that the question is even being asked. Palin was a lousy candidate for VP and her behavior since Election Day (particularly quitting her one and only major public office after only a year and a half) has not made her seem any more qualified for President. The Republicans will nominate her only if they have a real death wish.

No she'll be used much like Hillary was, pushed as the major candidate so that no one looks too closely at whatever dark horse they put up.

The problem the Republicans face, I think, is that they can't afford to keep on putting candidates like McCain on their tickets. The milquatoast RINO types are really out of favor right now, precisely because they stand for nothing and compromise before they even start negotiating with Democrats. This means they're going to have to get a firebrand Reagan-esque type of person on their ticket in 2012. They can and should avoid putting Palin in that slot, because she comes in fully ridiculed by the media already, and as you point out, she has an actual record of quitting.

Like her or not she does have charisma, but as a candidate she is a sure losing bet no matter what's being said now. What they need is somebody with charisma who is at least as eloquent as Barry (hopefully, moreso), and who can talk without at teleprompter.

What will they do? Time will tell I guess. It's not like I'm going to vote Republican in 2012, unless they put Ron Paul as their lead, which ain't happening.

MapQuest really needs to start their directions on #5. Pretty sure I know how to get out of my neighborhood.

That's just crazy talk. You need to join AIPAC and get back on the reservation.
