Title: Breast cancer's faulty gene

British scientists have identified the tumor suppressor gene which, when damaged, results in breast cancer and possibly that of the prostate, colon, ovary and bladder.

Gene NRG1 on chromosome 8, once damaged, can no longer cause DNA-damaged cells to self destruct and avoid dividing uncontrollably, thus becoming cancerous. Cambridge University's Paul Edwards, who discovered the faulty suppressor gene mechanism, said the fault does not appear to be hereditary.

I think I read somewhere that Jewish women have a 20 times higher rate of breast cancer than other groups. I think I'll google it.

Look at this !!!

Please go to this site and see what it has to say about the genetic effect for Ashkenazi Jewish women.

Ashkenazi predisposed to breast cancer perhaps because the base pair arrangement in the relevant section of chromosome 8 is not at optimum or maybe DNA strand happens to be folded (affected by other genes) in a way that makes it more readily susceptible to damage, thus inhibiting release of mechanisms/signals necessary for destruction of DNA-damaged cells which won't stop dividing at the appropriate time, thus developing into a tumor. With the cancers occurring past child-bearing age it's hard for "evolution" to have gotten rid of this trait. But what do I know having taken biochemistry (failing one course) for my undergraduate degree a quarter of a century ago.
