MOSCOW, October 9 (RIA Novosti) - The decision to award the Nobel Peace Prize to President Barack Obama was an expression of disappointment with the previous U.S. leadership, a Russian senator said on Friday.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the award earlier in the day.

"After the crushing neo-conservatism of the previous American administration, there really is a need to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between people, and the awarding of the prize to Obama testifies to the deep disappointment caused by the policies of George Bush," said Mikhail Margelov, who chairs the foreign affairs committee in the upper house of Russia's parliament.

The wording of the Nobel Committee's announcement, on the "extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples", is merely an expression of the committee's wishes for the president's future, Margelov said.

Considering the widespread optimism over Obama's presidency, he has been "given an advance that he will have to work off for his entire political career," he said.

Obama took office on January 20 this year, and the speaker of the upper house, Sergei Mironov, called the award premature.

"Obama, with all his virtues, has not been active in world politics for long enough for people to able to say with a clear conscience 'yes, he deserves it'".

However, he said Obama, "with his colossal potential to influence global affairs" is in a good position to justify the award.

"Let's hope it works out that way," he said.

Yury Ushakov, who served as Russia's ambassador to the United States for nine years, said he "would never have expected" Obama would get the peace prize.

The prize will be awarded in Oslo on December 10.

Dear Russian Senator:

Our "leadership" hasn't changed.

What's funny is, neither has theirs.

The absolute smoke and mirror crap being pulled on the world et. al. these last few decades is breathtaking in its scope.

It's a down payment.

Not so popular at home, but the Nobel committee loves him.

Obama will now do what he thinks he needs to do to deserve it.

Somebody should give me an award and 1.4 million dollars, so that I can take action in the future to deserve that award.

I swear to you, that would rock. It would rock out loud.

"Obama will now do what he thinks he needs to do to deserve it. "

This doesn't leave him much choice now, does it?

Othrwise I can see the Repug political adds next election contrasting images of him accepting this award with those of death and distruction occuring after that happening.

I m telling you. you just can't make this shit up.

you got that right, tho we disagree on the reasons.

"This Act (the Federal Reserve Act, Dec. 23rd 1913) establishes the most gigantic trust on earth. When the President (Woodrow Wilson) signs the Bill, the invisible government of the Monetary Power will be legalised... The worst legislative crime of the ages is perpetrated by this banking and currency Bill."--Charles Lindbergh, Sr.

Well, I'm sure we both agree though that this makes one wonder if this weakens the hair strand holding the Sword of Damocles hanging from the ceiling right above the Presidential noggin.

Won't weaken a darned thing.

Keep in mind, Obama is more popular abroad than at home. That explains much. Also keep in mind, he was President for only TWO WEEKS before the nomination window closed.

This is symbolic only. Of course, Obama now joins such grand peacemakers as Woodrow Wilson (who escalated WWI beyond belief), Yasser Arafat (who got it because they thought he renounced terrorism, only he didn't) and Teddy Roosevelt who practiced "Big Stick" diplomacy.

Given the company, anything is possible, including imposing Democracy by Force and "Making the world safe for Democracy" (to summarize Wilson).

COMRADE! Why are you not showing your Party affiliation and showing proper respect for Dear Leader? Put your Barackstika armband on RIGHT NOW!

weakens the hair strand

Gives it a little twang! anyway.

I think he'll give McChrystal the 40k men. Maybe not what the Nobel committee had in mind...

He might yet give McChrystal the men, but longer he goes without doing so, the less likely that this will happen. We'll see if this twangs the President's hypocract string.

It's not exactly something you don't give a Republican version of Mike Moore, the images of new troops arriving contrasted with images of Barack Obama recieving this prize at about the same time.

a Republican version of Mike Moore

I don't think there is one. Not on this. Alas.

Libertarian? Sure. Paleocon? Sure. Heck, even white nationalist? Sure. ;)

But not Republican.

Would rank-and-file Republicans respond to it? Maybe. But not because of the prize. Only because of any war weariness already present.
