A Baptist Church near Asheville, N.C., is hosting a "Halloween book burning" to purge the area of "Satan's" works, which include all non-King James versions of the Bible, popular books by many religious authors and even country music.

The website for the Amazing Grace Baptist Church in Canton, N.C., says there are "scriptural bases" for the book burning. The site quotes Acts 19:18-20: "And many that believed, came and confessed and shewed their deeds. Many of them also which used curious arts, brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver. So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed."

Church leaders deem Good News for Modern Man, the Evidence Bible, the New International Version Bible, the Green Bible and the Message Bible, as well as at least seven other versions of the Bible as "Satan's Bibles," according to the website. Attendees will also set fire to "Satan's popular books" such as the work of "heretics" including the Pope, Mother Teresa, Billy Graham and Rick Warren.

"I believe the King James version is God's preserved, inspired, inerrant and infallible word of God," Pastor Marc Grizzard told a local news station of his 14-member parish.

Grizzard's parish website explains that the Bible is the "final authority concerning all matters of faith and practice," for Amazing Grace Baptist Church. In the Parish doctrinal statement, Grizzard expounds that "the Scriptures shall be interpreted according to their normal grammatical-historical meaning, and all issues of interpretation and meaning shall be determined by the preacher."

The event also seeks to destroy "Satan's music" which includes every genre from country, rap and rock to "soft and easy" and "Southern Gospel" and" contemporary Christian."

David Lynch, a resident of nearby Asheville, N.C., told Raw Story "it's a little disconcerting how close this is to my home."

"They are burning so much stuff I've dubbed them the hypocritical Christian Taliban," Lynch said in a phone interview with Raw Story. "Just the scope of all the information they want to destroy is pretty disturbing."

Church leaders did not respond to Raw Story's requests for comment, but the website notes they will be providing "bar-b-que chicken, fried chicken and all the sides" at the book burning.

It's always funny to see these "everyone's going to hell but me and my church" types act out in their pitiful attempts to get get attention. The pastor must need a new car and his fourteen member parish isn't forking out enough dough.

So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed."

It also says in Mark 9"39-41:

And John answered him, saying, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, and he followeth not us: and we forbad him, because he followeth not us. But Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me. For he that is not against us is on our part. For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward.

As far as Mother Teresa goes, she founded the "Missionaries of Charity" in 1950 and spent 45 years living among and ministering to the poor, sick, orphaned, and dying of Calcutta, India. Her work inspired so many people that today the "Missionaries of Charity" operate 610 missions in 123 countries, where their work includes hospices and homes for people with HIV/AIDS, leprosy and tuberculosis, soup kitchens, children's and family counseling programs, orphanages, and schools.

What is even more miraculous about this woman is that she spent her life doing this work in the name of her God while questioning her own faith and the very existence of that very same God. She is the very example of Mark 9:24 - And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief. If Mother Teresa is of the devil and these kooks are examples of good Christians, then to hell I go. Luckily I know it's all bullshit.

This kind of thing always bothers me. Why would Satan need to get books published. The mind of man is already prone to doing evil all on its own, it's not like we need a push to act badly. Hell, all he would have to do is sit around with one of those little hand counter things and make a tally for every idiot on the planet who does bad things.

MapQuest really needs to start their directions on #5. Pretty sure I know how to get out of my neighborhood.

This is "news" exactly because it's an extreme oddity and .000001% off-the-wall sect.

Of course this is the kind of anti-Christian propaganda that some will use to broadbrush ALL Christians or Baptists.

I don't think it's as rare as you may believe. We have a couple of those types on this very board. Ricard something or other is our resident Jehovah Witness kook. He's a David Ben Ariel-type cultist. You know, he's THE authority on the Bible and unless you agree with his interpretation, you are damned for eternity. LOL! Then there's AllTheKing'sHorse's something or other. He has all the answers too. I think he's an evangelical rapture nut, but I'm not 100% sure. Then, of course, no site would be complete without the "every denomination is going to Heaven except the Catholic's" types like Coral Snake.

As for broad brushing all Christians or Baptists, I have no need to do that. For the most part, they stick their own foots firmly in their mouths without my help. As a matter of fact, about the only time I ever participate in religious threads is when the kooks like Richard what's his name begin damning everyone to hell because they do not have the same beliefs he does. I enjoy making fun of him and getting his panties in a wad by asking him who died and made him the authority on which interpretation of a bible verse is the correct one.

HF, it IS rare.

On this board we are ALL radical to some degree, so not even you would consider the individuals here "typical" in any sense of the word.

IMO you're pretty fair-handed, and I suppose everyone here is prepared to defend or be ridiculed over their personal assertions... That said, as someone whose been around Christians of ALL types, I can tell you the subject story of this thread is A-typical, and some are all too anxious to broad brush "fundies" as nuts whenever possible with as flimsy "evidence" as possible.
