"We just feel it is a protective measure," Superintendent Emily Goodwin said. "It is hard to hold school when we only have four or five students in each class." Goodwin said as of 2:30 p.m. Monday, 743 of the district's 2,984 students or about one in four were absent from school, and others who had attended school were cutting their day short by going home sick. Goodwin said she is not sure if the H1N1 virus is to blame, but she did say the school has a few confirmed cases of the flu. "Most of the kids are just sick," she said. "They have coughing, and some have fevers. It is suspicious enough for us to feel it is necessary to take some time off." This is not the first time this school year that illness has forced students to stay home from a Jackson-area school. Earlier this month, 40 percent of da Vinci primary students were out sick, forcing the school to close its doors for three days. The school did not have any confirmed cases of the H1N1 virus, formerly known as the swine flu. Other school districts reported a high number of illness-related absences but not enough to consider closing. Northwest parents seem to have mixed feelings about the closure. "I don't think two days off will stop the spread of the flu," said Shelly Weeks, who has a daughter at Northwest High School. "It is going to go around regardless." Weeks' daughter, Whitney, had to miss school because of a cold a few weeks ago. Weeks said parents should keep their sick children at home instead of sending them to school in order to prevent the spread of colds and flu strains. "I think it just has to run its course," said Karen Thiesse, whose son, Adam, is a senior at Northwest High School. "I think (closing the schools) is a proactive measure that will hopefully stop the situation from getting worse. We have been lucky so far." The district's closing will not affect the Northwest High School boys soccer team's district semifinal game against Western at Tecumseh on Wednesday. But Northwest coach Kevin Bristol said Monday night his team would not be permitted to practice today. This week, students statewide are taking the Michigan Educational Assessment Program exams. The second week of testing would have been today for Northwest students. Goodwin said she hopes students who were ill are feeling well enough to return to school Thursday to resume testing. The district will also have a testing make-up day Friday to wrap up the exam.
