Al Qaeda Big Wig Killed. Again.

yazidAl Qaeda bigwig Abu Mustafa al-Yazid has been killed. Again. We think. Or possibly some other guy. Maybe.

Reports of Yazid’s death read like a case study in how unreliable reporting on drone strikes can be. Dawn reports conflicting stories over how Yazid apparently died, either from a drone strike or in a mishap while preparing a suicide vest. Moreover, Long War Journal’s Bill Roggio points out that there’s additional confusion over exactly who died. Pakistani media reports about the incident(s) have used the name Abu Musa al-Masri, which could be another name for Abu Mustafa al-Yazid or an altogether different Egyptian al-Qaeda member. And like like many of his zombie brethren, Yazid has been killed before, according to the press, in an August 2008 battle with the Pakistani Army.

Yazid is really dead, it would be among the most significant losses suffered by al-Qaeda this year. Yazid is reportedly a founding member of al-Qaeda dating back to 1988, having once belonged to Ayman al-Zawahiri’s Egyptian Islamic Jihad. His portfolio in the al-Qaeda organization has shifted over the years, but Yazid has remained in the upper ranks of al-Qaeda’s leadership.

He rose through the ranks of al-Qaeda’s senior leadership over the years, serving first as the group’s “chief financial manager” in Sudan. In May 2007, he made his debut appearance as al-Qaeda’s commander for Afghanistan in a video delivered to Al-Jazeera. Yazid is reported to have earned the position in part due to his Pashto language skills and warm relationship with the Taliban. In recent videos, he has spoken on behalf of al-Qaeda’s “general command” and intelligence officials have labeled him the group’s “number 3” and “general manager.”

Since 2007, Yazid has been an increasingly visible presence in al-Qaeda propaganda, making appearances to request financial contributions, speak on organizational policy and issue threats. He has also been more accessible to the mainstream media than the rest of al-Qaeda’s senior leadership, making himself available for interviews with reporters for Pakistan’s Geo TV and most recently for Al-Jazeera.

Al-Qaeda would probably not let the death of a senior commander like Abu Mustafa pass unremarked. And if he’s alive, his proclivity for video appearances means we are likely to see him again. Either way, there’s a good chance there will be clarity as to Yazid’s fate — sooner or later.
