Afghan President Hamid Karzai's top challenger called for a "dramatic increase" in troops to ensure security in his country, suggesting a failure to send in reinforcements could put Afghanistan "at risk" of falling to insurgents. "The need for more troops is there in order to reverse the situation," Abdullah Abdullah, who is expected to face off against Karzai in a runoff election in two weeks, told "Fox News Sunday." President Obama is deliberating over a request from his top commander for such an increase. He's weighing a call by Gen. Stanley McChrystal and other military officials for 40,000 more troops against calls to pursue a more surgical strategy aimed at top Al Qaeda leaders, particularly in Pakistan. But Abdullah did not say whether Obama is taking too long to determine whether to grant his top commander's request for more forces. "Even if the decision is made today it doesn't mean tomorrow we'll have troops on the ground. It will take time," he said. But he suggested that as long as Karzai is in power, the war effort will be hampered. "The Afghan side has not been able to deliver, and the Afghan side has been led by Mr. Karzai," Abdullah said. A runoff was ordered following findings of widespread fraud in the August election, much of which tilted in Karzai's favor. Abdullah told "Fox News Sunday" that he was not inclined to consent to a power-sharing agreement to avoid the second round. "I think I should rule it out, because I'm ready to go for a runoff," he said. But he still warned about the possibility that the runoff will bring with it even more fraud if key reforms are not made. Abdullah reportedly wants the leadership of the election commission replaced before the vote. "Perhaps we might have to go through the same sort of saga," he said. "It will make the situation very difficult if those conditions ... are not met." Abdullah warned that without assurances that the vote will be credible it will be difficult to convince voters to turn out. He did not say whether he would consider a boycott of the runoff if reforms are not made.

Perhaps you recall when Johnson and MacNamara were deciding in the White House what targets in North Vietnam would be bombed by the Air Force and how it would be done?????? That only ceased when the AF pilots were near revolt. MacNamara was never in the military and Johnson was in for six months, both were experts.
The plague occurring with America's "War in Afghanistan" is that we already lost. America lost when GWBush didn't keep his eye on the ball tracking down Osama bin Laden. The government puppet state that the USA placed in Afghanistan wants US_Dollars, not US deaths or casualties.

And what - six months after we withdrew - China and Vietnam were at war with one another? The same folks that we were told that they were going to "domino" all the way into Arkansas. And now I understand Vietnam is an excellent place to visit. And with a vibrant market economy. And they even use money - those trickky Commies. We have been swindled into to these wars very like Germans were swindled into their wars, of aggression in reality, defensive in the mirage presented by the Fox News of their times.

Going back to WW2, if you review it, all of our wars that were against communists had a very large and vocal anti war movement. Now we have endless years of war, bloodshed and loss of wealth and no anti war movement. One needs not be an expert to see there is a direct causative factor at work. All of our wars since 1945 have been no win wars, gung ho armchair warriors on one side of the government, and on the other side a huge anti war group. I get the impression we are being see sawed and losing every time.
Don't forget the more recent soviet invasion in 1979 AD. Of course the USSR doesn't exist anymore. They were drained dry by the economic costs for a sustained war.

The nightly snooze seems to think the Kenyan will, in time, satisfy
McKrystal's request of an additional 40k troop increase. The King of Peace
will do it in increments of 10K-15K so as not to startle the goofs and oafs
who still believe in Him.

You are right on spot with one small change: it is unlikely Russia is supplying a dime to the Taliban; it is more likely Pakistan, Syria and Iran and many thousands of new freedom fighters from Iraq. Overall, the mid-east hates Americans. I don't recommend a vacation there with the family.

And we will move deeper into the quagmire. We have people here trying to shift the blame off onto the military and McChrystal in particular. If they stop to think, this army can go nowhere if not funded by the Congress and ordered by the President. Good army or bad army I dont know, but put the blame where it belongs, the civilians in Washington DC that we elected.
That is the definition of a military dictatorship, which isn't correct. We have a civilian run military driven by the MIC. Has the MIC and the military and the congress all intermingled at some level? Sure, but make no mistake this is Obama's war(s), funded by congress, which is presently Democratically controlled. If that bothers some folks, they need to get over it and get on board the clue bus.
The House overwhelmingly passes each and every appropriations bill for continuation of this endless horrible war. They are all civilians that the voters elected. One hundred and thirty million voters cannot be wrong, we are wrong, the military is wrong, but not this fraud of a government.
If I'm not mistaken the Chairman of the Appropriations Committee is that sterling citizen from Harlem, Charlie Rangel. Surely a man of his intellect, honesty and integrity would only work in the best interest of this great nation.
