50 YEARS AGO - 1955

* Car owners will receive heavier license fee jolts when they apply for new plates in 1956 and no matter what the owner is driving--he'll have to dig deeper than in the past, according to a schedule received by John Igou, Lemhi county assessor. The $5 fee went the way of the passenger pigeon during the last legislature.
* No cars may be parked on the racetrack at the Lemhi county fairgrounds, although the fair board has agreed that driving cars across the track into the infield for ball games is permissible.
* A whirlibird last week brought Gary Hathaway last Friday to Salmon from Middle Fork lookout where he was stricken by tick fever. Pilot of the helicopter was Earl Thompson.

60 YEARS AGO - 1945

* Four pounds of additional home canning sugar will be issued automatically to all persons who received the "restricted" allottment of nine pounds or less after June 15, announced Ray McGoldrick, chairman of the local war price and rationing board this week.
* Joe Bohney said today that two young badgers had dug a bomb shelter under one corner of his blacksmith shop in Salmon and had taken up their abode in the new quarters.
* Mr. and Mrs. Albert Dawson and Mrs. Earl Wittebork were overnight guests of the James Campbells Monday. Albert had just returned on furlough from the south Pacific.

70 YEARS AGO - 1935

* L. E. Eldredge, formerly manager of the Farmers Cooperative Production association, closed a deal the first of this week for the purchase of the Salmon Valley Creamery, which was established here several years ago by Curtis Loveless. The name of the creamery has been changed to "Rocky Mountain Creamery."
* Hugh Crownmounts, Pete Davis, and Bo Roberts are hauling lumber to Joe McCourt's Smoky Bess mine, where a new building is to be constructed.
* A grass fire was started up Wimpy creek by some careless hunter last week. By the quick action of Mr. Ankrum and Mr. Markham it was soon extinguished.

80 YEARS AGO - 1925

* The Idaho Home Industries association is trying to awaken the people of this state to the vital importance of using the products of home industries. * Do not sow clover and sudan grass together.
* J.C. Penny Co., Inc., Department Stores Salmon, Idaho, School Caps for the boy, fresh new novelty patterns and fabrics, twill lined. Caps for service and good looks. Boy's fall suits--Two pairs knickers for double service. At our exceptionally low price--$5.90.
* Link's Business College, Boise, announces it's fall term.

90 YEARS AGO - 1915

* By the direction of the Secretary of the Interior 424 acres of land, together with the buildings thereon, comprising the Lemhi Agency and School Plant and Farm, Idaho, will be offered for sale to the highest bidders at Lemhi, Idaho, beginning on September 13, 1915.
* Affairs in the Balkans are approaching a crises.

* Ten years ago not a female electrician was recorded in this country, now there are 409 of them.
* A jolly crowd visited the Hot Springs on Friday and all enjoyed the day.
* The gutters need a thorough cleaning, a number of manure piles should be removed, and an attempt made to do away with the bad odors.

*******************************

As ever, enduring the war years mean sacrifices. In this case, WWII saw rationing of lots of things; here, a staple of the food supply, sugar.

Now, as then, it seems like God's creatures did things 'their way. My current problem stems from some blacks and whites--and they ain't pigs!

I believe the creamery mentioned back in 1935 is the one that has finally given up the ghost down on main street, by the river. It was last a cheese factory, which---tah dah---is made from milk. It will now be a restaurant.

The 1915 mention of the Lemhi Agency refers to the Indian agency. Salmon is noted for the Lemhi Indians, notably Sacaweja. We now have a large, new Sacaweja Interpretative Center. Don't ask.

I thought the 100 Years Ago column was an interesting sidenote regarding the number of female electricians in the country 110 years ago being zero, zilch, nada, and within 10 years there were 409.

In this same recapture of time, only of too recent a date to be considered 'real history', is a note in the 30 year ago column about the waiting list for volunteer fireman. Seems as though the city council had amended a city ordinance to allow women to serve in this capacity. So the first lady had been listed in January as 10th and by the end of August had moved to up to the 5th in line.

Oh yeah......Wimpy Creek (pronounced wimpy as in bush 1 was a wimp). That was where I initially wanted to purchase when I moved over to this country. But then, I visited one time and was walking around the creek in the yard area---and holy tamales! The mosquitos thought I was the new blood bank! It was good that we hadn't come to an agreement on that place--sure did like it though.

Affairs in the Balkans are approaching a crises.

So we had WWI (to end all wars), WWII (to found Israel), the Cold War (to enrich the military/industrial complex), and all the rest of our wars to profit a few...what a deal.
