Christian Myths -- Why?

One Myth Leads To Another

“Look out,” wrote the apostle Paul to Christians living in the latter half of the first century C.E. What was he warning against? “Perhaps there may be someone who will carry you off as his prey through the philosophy and empty deception according to the tradition of men.” --Colossians 2:8.

Colossians 2:8 Look out: perhaps there may be someone who will carry YOU off as his prey through the philosophy and empty deception according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary things of the world and not according to Christ;

Despite Paul’s warning, from the middle of the second century C.E., some Christians began using concepts borrowed from ancient philosophers in order to explain their beliefs. Why? They wanted to be accepted by the educated people of the Roman Empire and thus make more converts.

Justin Martyr, one of the most famous of these Christians, believed that God’s Spokesman had manifested himself to Greek philosophers long before the arrival of Jesus. According to Justin and like-minded teachers, the contribution of philosophy and mythology to Christianity made this form of religion truly universal.

Justin Martyr’s form of Christianity became very successful in gaining converts. However, the adoption of one myth led o the creation of others and produced what is now commonly believed to be Christian doctrine. To expose these myths, compare what the following reference works say with what the Bible actually teaches.

Christian Myth 1: The Soul Is Immortal

What is the Origin of this myth? “The early Christian philosophers adopted the Greek concept of the soul’s immortality and thought of the soul as being created by God and infused into the body at conception.” -- The New Encyclopedia Britannia (1988), Volume 11, page 25.

Regarding the creation of the first human soul, the Bible says: “Jehovah God proceeded to form the man out of dust from the ground and to blow into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man came to be a living soul (Hebrew ne’phesh).” --Genesis 2:7.

The Hebrew word ne’phesh, translated “soul,” means ‘a creature that breathes.’ When God created the first man, Adam, He did not infuse into him an immortal soul but the life force that is maintained by breathing.

Therefore, “soul” in the biblical sense refers to the entire living being. If separated from the life force originally given by God, the soul dies. – Genesis 3:19; Ezekiel 18:20.

The doctrine of the immortality of the soul raised questions: Where do souls go after death? What happens to the souls of the wicked? When Christians adopted the myth of the immortal soul, this led them to accept another myth – the teaching of hellfire.

Compare these Bible verses: Ecclesiastes 3:19; Matthew 10:28; Acts 3:23.

Also, compare Genesis 2:17 But as for the tree of the knowledge of good and bad you must not eat from it, for in the day you eat from it you will positively die.”

Genesis 3:4 At this the serpent said to the woman: “YOU positively will not die.

There is a simple choice here; either believe Almighty God as He spoke in Genesis 2:17, or, believe Satan the Devil as he spoke through the serpent calling God a liar.

FACT: At death a person ceases to exist.

Soul, spirit and "breath" all come from the same root word. We have no way of catching nuances in translation when dealing multifaceted words.

FACT: At death a person ceases to exist

A fact has evidence. Present the evidence to the positive. It can't be done (nor can evidence of a person existing after death exist either).

The most anybody can say is "I disbelieve in life after death" and remain logically consistent. Positing such as a fact is an act of faith just as stating it in the negative is an act of faith.

MapQuest really needs to start their directions on #5. Pretty sure I know how to get out of my neighborhood.

So you're saying you don't believe in an afterlife? Wow, talk about a twisted view of religion.

Genesis States:

"God created man in his own image."

God is an immortal spirit.

Therefore: Man is an immortal Spirit.

I could entertain other arguments but that will suffice to simply, and neatly, demolish the basis of the article's argument.

So are you saying there is no such thing as life after death? Hmmm... If that is what you are saying, then I can say without any doubt or hesitation that you are wrong.

So you're saying you don't believe in an afterlife?

You are correct, since the Bible is very clear about this;

and death will be no more.

Genesis 2:17 But as for the tree of the knowledge of good and bad you must not eat from it, for in the day you eat from it you will positively die.”

This is in here for one major point; Adam and Eve were not created to die. They disobeyed, and through that disobedience sin entered into our lives;

Romans 5:12 That is why, just as through one man sin entered into the world and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men because they had all sinned— .

Through one man, sin entered into the world….. and before that death did not exist on this earth for man. So tell me, please, exactly how was it that Adam and Eve were to become spirit creatures and go to heaven?

Revelation 21:4 And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.”

And death will be no more. Wonder what that means. So the question that this raises is simple; if people are not to die, how are they to go to heaven?

And WHY!!! Would you believe in some form of religion that REQUIRES that people get old, get sick, and die, FOREVER? When those things are promised, by Almighty God, to, at some point in time, be done away with?

No more sickness. No more old age. No more death. Now, that is a God of love (1 John 4:8).

Now, if you want an answer to this, try and study up on why there are 9 resurrections performed in the Bible for our education, and to help our faith. And why, in Psalms we are told;

Psalms 115:16 As regards the heavens, to Jehovah the heavens belong, But the earth he has given to the sons of men.

1 John 4;8 He that does not love has not come to know God, because God is love. : Matthew 22:39 ...‘You must love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 On these two commandments the whole Law hangs, and the Prophets.”

So you're saying you don't believe in an afterlife?

JW's believe: Souls of wicked are annhilated, a select few JW's go to Heaven, other JW's enjoy a paradise earth for an eternity.

Ask Richard how "an eternity" jives with mortality and how the "select few" JW's are mortal in heaven........inquiring minds want to know. : )

"God created man in his own image."

I'll go even further that that.

The actual Hebrew text states something similar to this;

"God (plural) Created Mankind in Their Own Image, male and female God Created Them"

You see, God exists as a duality, just as ALL living things exist as a duality, male and female, whether it be plants, mammals, fish, or insects.

In fact, you COULD replace the word Mankind with ALL LIVING THINGS, it would actually be more accurate.

The old Hebrew Rabbis weren't too keen on the idea of women being equal to men, so they shifted the meaning to Him vs. Them, yet the actual words and context signify a plural rather than a singular, and do not attribute a masculine gender.

Sort of a variation of the "rapture" theme...

Sort of a variation of the "rapture" theme...

Another variation, but just as hard to accept.

JW's believe that 144,000 make it to heaven and the last few to sneak in the door were JW's between 1879 and 1935. This is a literal view of Revelations 7:4: "And I heard the number of those who were sealed, a hundred and forty-four thousand, sealed out of every tribe of the sons of Israel."

However, the Watchtower takes Rev. 5-8 as figurative because the 12 tribes mentioned in Rev. 7:5-8 don't match up to the 12 tribes of Israel. By discarding this portion, JW's are able to include themselves in the literal 144,000 that would refer only to descendants if Rev. 7:5-8 were taken literally as Rev. 7:4 is taken literally.

JW's see those who are part of the 144,000 as "spiritual Israel" and about 8,000 are living today who will be part of this "heavenly flock" while those who didn't make the cut off date, arbitrarily decided by Rutherford, will be the "earthly hope" or the "earthly flock." All of those who are not JW or who have been disfellowshipped will be annihilated, according to the faith, while faithful JW's enjoy eternity on earth after Armageddon.

One other tidbit, the JW's have predicted Armageddon to happen in 1914, 1918, 1925, 1941, and 1975. All of which were false prophesies, but members generally do not like to discuss how the Watchtower Society could make such mistakes.

One huge possibility concerning any sort of rapture is that sure, something from the sky will urge the "flock" to come and be "raptured", but is it what it seems...

I can empathize with that.....one is expected to turn their backs on all of their "worldly" friends and family in lieu of only having true believing JW's in their lives. When one opts to escape it can be very lonely and isolating, which is by design to get folks to return to the flock.
