(10-28) 10:17 PDT Austin, Texas (AP) --

Former Vice President Dick Cheney will throw his support behind U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison's campaign for Texas governor.

Hutchison's campaign confirmed Wednesday that Cheney will endorse the Texas Republican's March primary challenge of Gov. Rick Perry at a fundraiser next month.

Campaign spokeswoman Jennifer Baker says details are still being worked out, but Cheney is scheduled to appear at a Nov. 17 fundraiser and campaign event in Houston.

The former vice president is popular with conservative activists and could help Hutchison bolster support among them.

I think ghostdog is closer to the truth here about Texans. These are very scary folks. I say this as someone who has lived among them for my entire life and often feel as if I am viewing a separate species. I've always thought the heat may play a factor in the craziness quotient here.

This endorsement WILL sway a few voters over to Kay. However, what she really needs is for Dems to cross over and vote against Rick in substantial numbers.

Like having death and taxes on your side. She must be pathetic.

I was at a fundraiser for Debra Medina this afternoon, medinafortexas.com and she's definitely doing her level best to be the next gov.

Abolishing property taxes is the main plank that really resonants with me.

She will be on with AJ in the near future, if not tomorrow.

Property taxes on a mans home is the most onerous tax of all.

It ensures that you do not own but rather are renting from the state.

Exactly Debra's point. To the letter.

The best candidate, IMO, is Hank Gilbert.

I've spoken with him at length. He's from just down the road from me. He was one of the organizers of the anti-toll road group called TURF and is still on its board. Even though he is a Democrat, 75 percent of TURF's members are GOPers, he told me.

The GOPers have had one-party control of this state for about 15 years now. That's too long. I don't think Hank'll make much difference, because no governor does. But I don't think he'll start bragging about how he deserves to be President of the United States because he's "run Texas," as the Chimp used to do in 1999-2000. And people in other parts of the country fell for it! Being Governor of Texas is like being President of the Book-of-the-Month Club or being Grand Marshal of the Tournament of Roses Parade or something. It's mainly a ceremonial position.

Very true, the Lt.Gov really has the hammer here.

As I've said before, if the General Election was between Medina and Friedman, that would be great.

Just think, if Claytie Williams hadn't made the 'rape joke' he would have beat Ma Richards and Jorge Booosh would not have been elected Govenor as he would never challenge Williams.

Never swear "allegiance" to anything other than the 'right to change your mind'!

I would not vote for anyone supported by chinney. The best part of him ran down his mamas leg after he was born. We need to send him and his kind packing. Vote for Debra Medina.

If a man has nothing that he is willing to die for, then he has nothing worth living for.
