Christian Myth 2: The Wicked Suffer in Hell

What is the origin of this myth? “Of all classical Greek philosophers, the one who has had the greatest influence on traditional views of Hell is Plato.” -- Histoire des enfers (The History of Hell), by Georges Minois, page 50.

“From the middle of the 2nd century AD Christians who had some training in Greek philosophy began to feel the need to express their faith in its terms… The philosophy that suited them best was Platonism (the teachings of Plato).” – The New Encyclopedia Britannica (1988), Volume 25, page 890.

“The teachings of the Church affirms the existence of hell and its eternity. Immediately after death the souls of those who die in a state of mortal sin descend into hell, where they suffer the punishments of hell, ‘eternal fire.’ The chief punishment of hell is eternal separation from God.” – Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1994 edition, page 270.

What does the Bible say? “For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing, … for there is no work or thought or knowledge or wisdom in Sheol, to which you are going.” – Ecclesiastes 9:5, 10, Revised Standard Version.

The Hebrew word Sheol, which referred to the “abode of the dead,” is translated “hell” in some versions of the Bible. What does this passage reveal about the condition of the dead? Do they suffer in Sheol in order to atone for their errors? No, for they “know nothing.” That is why the Patriarch Job, when suffering terribly because of a severe illness, begged God: “Protect me in hell (Hebrew, Sheol).” (Job 14:13; Douay-Rheims Version) What meaning would his request have had if Sheol was a place of eternal torment? Hell, in the Biblical sense, is simply the common grave of mankind, where all activity has ceased.

Is not this definition of hell more logical and in harmony with Scripture? What crime, however horrible, could cause a God of love to torture a person endlessly? (1 John 4:8) But if hellfire is a myth, what about heaven?

Compare these Bible verses; Psalm 146:3,4; Acts 2:25-27; Romans 6:7, 23.

FACT: God does not punish people in hell.

Who opposes Jehovah God? A creature named Satan does. Satan, in the original language of the Bible means Opposer. But Satan has another name as well; Devil. Satan, the Devil. Why the second name? Because Devil means Slanderer. Therefore, this powerful spirit creature who opposes Almighty God is the Opposer of God, and the Slanderer of God as well.

What does it mean to be a Slanderer? It means that Satan tells lies about Jehovah God. Here is the first lie told about Almighty God;

Jehovah God speaking; Genesis 2:17 But as for the tree of the knowledge of good and bad you must not eat from it, for in the day you eat from it you will positively die.”

Satan speaking through a serpent in the Garden; Genesis 3:4 At this the serpent said to the woman: “YOU positively will not die.

Satan the Devil (Slanderer) thus called Jehovah God a liar, and slandered His Holy Name.

Can we prove that Satan actually spoke to Eve through the Serpent? Yes, in the Bible.

Revelation 20:1 And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven with the key of the abyss and a great chain in his hand. 2 And he seized the dragon, the original serpent, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years.

How else has Satan the Slanderer lied about Jehovah God to the people of this world? One of the principle ways is by lying about the nature of Almighty God. We are told in the Bible that God is a God of love; in fact, we are told that God IS love;

1 John 4:8 He that does not love has not come to know God, because God is love.

The above verse is very important, both for understanding Jehovah God, and for understanding our obligations on this earth; to love. To love is the primary command that Jesus the Christ brought to the earth as his message to mankind. He that does not love has not come to know God. Period. And anyone that would believe that a God of love would torture someone forever in hellfire also does not know God, for this is slander of Almighty God in the extreme.

Everyone should note that every religion of man teaches hellfire and eternal damnation in one form or another – EXCEPT the Bible. This is one of the primary differences between the Bible and all other ‘religious’ books that exist. It also shows that anyone who accepts/teaches/speaks of hellfire and damnation, and yet claims to be a ‘Christian,’ is also a slanderer of Almighty God.

Chose your friends wisely. Do not be misled, bad associations spoil useful habits (1 Corinthians 15:33).

Scripture, read honestly, is far far more emphatic about teaching of eternal life in heaven if born again in Christ.

Any mention of hell is rather limited or isolated.

The Catholics, the Prots and Baptists have all preferred to preach hellfire instead of the merits of positive Christianity. One can see why they did so but it isn't very consistent with scripture or the authentically Jewish positivism that Jesus and His disciples undoubtedly embraced.

Judaism is probably the most positivist optimistic religion in history. Very life-affirming, very much focused on happiness, doing good, etc.

This isn't to say that all persons who are Jewish have lived up to that theological and philosophical heritage, no more than you could say it of Christians.

Enumerating the individual myths seems to imply that parts of it are true, and that's not the case. It's all crap, all the way through.

You know, after reading a good bit of the Koran and the Old and New Testaments, ethically and morally and even poetically the Gospels appear to me to be the superior document all around. More than that I can't and will not say.

Posters that pour out their confessional biases here in blunderbus posts do this forum a disservice, IMHO. This place is meant to be a discussion area for small r republicans, if I'm not mistaken. I believe that everyone that posts here regularly subscribes to the same basic code of morality. I'd hope that they abhor the cheatin' and lyin' in their personal lives as much as they condemn it in the politicians and public figures that they roast here every day.

Have to say that I do find reading about religion and religious history and archaeology pretty interesting. Beyond that, however, I think this is not the place to save men's souls. When posters proselytize here they are usually stepping on someone's toes, and they always raise more cain than converts.

Scripture, read honestly, is far far more emphatic about teaching of eternal life in heaven if born again in Christ.

I have heard this before, but honestly, I can find no hope in such preachings.

The basic premise of such teachings is that mankind will continue to grow old, get sick, and die.... pretty much forever. That is in direct conflict with what is taught in the Bible. Specifically;

Revelation 21:3 With that I heard a loud voice from the throne say: “Look! The tent of God is with mankind, and he will reside with them, and they will be his peoples. And God himself will be with them. 4 And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.”

Death will be no more, nor outcry, nor pain, nor mourning. A truly happy prophecy for the future. But is this the only one in the Bible? Not hardly.

Isaiah 35:1 Strengthen the weak hands, YOU people, and make the knees that are wobbling firm. 4 Say to those who are anxious at heart: “Be strong. Do not be afraid. Look! YOUR own God will come with vengeance itself, God even with a repayment. He himself will come and save YOU people.”

5 At that time the eyes of the blind ones will be opened, and the very ears of the deaf ones will be unstopped. 6 At that time the lame one will climb up just as a stag does, and the tongue of the speechless one will cry out in gladness. For in the wilderness waters will have burst out, and torrents in the desert plain. 7 And the heat-parched ground will have become as a reedy pool, and the thirsty ground as springs of water.

The Bible is very clear in explaining that conditions on the earth will, to fulfill the purposes of Almighty God, be returned to the original conditions of the Garden of Eden.

Isaiah continues in verse 10: And the very ones redeemed by Jehovah will return and certainly come to Zion with a joyful cry; and rejoicing to time indefinite will be upon their head. To exultation and rejoicing they will attain, and grief and sighing must flee away.

The very ones redeemed by Jehovah will return. This is confirmed in the Book of John;

John 5:28 Do not marvel at this, because the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out, those who did good things to a resurrection of life, those who practiced vile things to a resurrection of judgment.

Are we told more in the Bible. Oh, my, yes.

Psalms 72:16 There will come to be plenty of grain on the earth; On the top of the mountains there will be an overflow.

No more shortage of food on the earth. Now, if everyone is going to grow old, get sick and die anyway, why would this promise be important? If we are to end up going to heaven, why would such promises, and there are many, be made?

And death will be no more. Interesting, you have to admit.

There is one other important point. ALL of the religions of man on earth teach some from of 'going to heaven' and some kind of hell. Except, the Bible.

Understanding that, you should carefully consider the following from the Bible;

Matthew 7:13 “Go in through the narrow gate; because broad and spacious is the road leading off into destruction, and many are the ones going in through it; 14 whereas narrow is the gate and cramped the road leading off into life, and few are the ones finding it.

1 John 4;8 He that does not love has not come to know God, because God is love. : Matthew 22:39 ...‘You must love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 On these two commandments the whole Law hangs, and the Prophets.”
