The mission of this forum is to provide a cyberspace meeting place where lovers of individual freedom can gather to post articles and opinions about the world's events and how these events affect their unalienable rights to life, liberty, and property. One of our fundamental rights is that of our right to freedom of association. The correlative right to freedom of association is the equally important right to freedom of non-association. Yes, the right to NOT associate -- to exclude people from our interrelationships, for any reason, based on personal preference, is also a fundamental right. This right should be free from government interference, coercion, policies, statutes, rules, regulations, codes, or force. Another fundamental right is the right to private property -- to own and enjoy our property free from government or second-party interference, as long as one's use of that property does not trespass on the equal rights of another. Consistent with these two fundamental unalienable rights, this forum constitutes the private property of its owners and, as such, allows for the exercise of our right to freedom of association and freedom of non-association, based on our preferences. Therefore, regarding banning policies of this forum, as they relate to the protection of private property, the owners reserve the right to suspend or terminate the posting privileges of guests on this forum at our discretion. That said, we will endeavor to use this discretion judiciously while being mindful of not allowing guests to post on this forum who, we believe, are detrimental to the goals and values consistent with that of individual liberty.
Poster Comment: I have found myself of late compelled to revisit the mission statement of Freedom4um. I am inviting each of you to do the same. I have determined that there are some here whose value system and opinions are not in keeping with, and are even detrimental, to the mission of this forum. This is not about who is right or wrong, but rather about ideological incompatibility. Therefore, I am asking that the posters whose goals are at odds with this forum's reason to be to, in the words of Samuel Adams, depart from us in peace. I do not want public internecine discussion on this and I ask that you respect my right, as 4um's owner, of freedom of association and non-association.

The East side of Indiana just started observing DST a couple of years ago. In the Summer, high noon occurs about 1:45PM. With the change back to EST tomorrow, noon will be back to a slightly more reasonable 12:45PM. I wouldn't mind DST so much if they didn't get the clock almost two hours out of whack with the sun.

Word History: When is a mistake not a mistake? In language at least, the answer to this question is "When everyone adopts it," and on rare occasions, "When it's in the dictionary." The word internecine presents a case in point. Today, it usually has the meaning "relating to internal struggle," but in its first recorded use in English, in 1663, it meant "fought to the death." How it got from one sense to another is an interesting story in the history of English. The Latin source of the word, spelled both internec+nus and internec+vus, meant "fought to the death, murderous." It is a derivative of the verb necre, "to kill." The prefix inter- was here used not in the usual sense "between, mutual" but rather as an intensifier meaning "all the way, to the death." This piece of knowledge was unknown to Samuel Johnson, however, when he was working on his great dictionary in the 18th century. He included internecine in his dictionary but misunderstood the prefix and defined the word as "endeavoring mutual destruction." Johnson was not taken to task for this error. On the contrary, his dictionary was so popular and considered so authoritative that this error became widely adopted as correct usage. The error was further compounded when internecine acquired the sense "relating to internal struggle." This story thus illustrates how dictionaries are often viewed as providing norms and how the ultimate arbiter in language, even for the dictionary itself, is popular usage.
