GOUVERNEUR, NY - Congressman-elect Bill Owens was sworn in at noon today.

Owens indicated in a press release released shortly afterwards that he was now in favor of the the "Affordable Healthcare for America Act" bill in direct contrast to his earlier position during the election campaign.

According to Politico.com, Mr. Owens assured voters that he felt the public option had no place in the health care reform bill. Contrary to that position, Mr. Owens now indicates that he intends to vote in favor of the bill even though it now contains a public option.

UPDATED: A spokesman for Congressman Owens indicated correctly that Mr. Owens had recanted his solid position against public option later in the campaign, clarifying that he did not wish public option to be a 'litmus test' for the Health Reform bill and that on Oct. 30th, several days prior to the election, in a debate had stated that he generally supported the public option as it was now written (at that time.)

Mr. Owens also indicated during his campaign that he was firmly opposed to cutting Medicare benefits, taxing health care benefits, and increased taxes on the middle class in any way as you can see clearly in the screenshot below, taken directly from Mr. Owens' campaign website.

It looks to me as if, in spite of people on this forum and elsewhere at town hall meetings screaming "socialism" etc., all "healthcare reform" is going to do is guarantee ever-increasing customers bases and profits to private megacorp insurance entities.

I just wish people would get the lingo right. We're under fascism here. Socialism every now and then accidentally helps out a few people. Fascism only helps the corporations who own the government. Actually, now that I think about it, it's "reverse fascism." The corporations control the government, not vice versa.

Sam, chill. Some of us have been around for longer than we care to recall, and have through many political battles. In '92 it irked me people used the word democracy in place of republic. Later the misuse of the word conservative to describe neoconservatives (they're Trotskyites) bothered me. It seemed the left was becoming the right, and vice versa. Hell, the simple use of the terms left- right bothed some because "we were in a new paradigm" and those terms, we were told, no longer applied. Now you admonish us that socialism isn't appropriate because fascist is more correct. Socialists support big government and a redistribution of OTHERS wealth. Yes, the mix of business interest in today's political climate might point the needle more toward fascism, but we aren't in a college lecture. We know our stuff and either term is interchangeable for the purpose of debate. I've personally used corportist, but who really cares. Peace.

It's not big government. It is government-in-name-only standing in as enforcer for big corporations. We see the same thing with the privatization of large portions of the military.

The U.S. government is now a "shell corporation" used to funnel money to private interests. The main groups benefitting from socialism are the senior citizens who've lived long enough to receive more than they contributed via FICA and the destitute youth and their mommas on WIC and other such "programs."

All veterans/military retirees are direct beneficiaries of socialism, but they think they "earned" it because their a$$e$ might have been shot off. Fair point, but most never heard a shot fired in anger. The ones who joined (stupidly, IMO) right after the 9/11 psyop made them want to "sacrifice for my country," I'll grant, have "earned" it and then some.
