The chlorotoxin found in scorpion venom can reduce the spread of cancerous cells in the brain by 98% when combined with nanoparticles. Washington University researchers found that the MMP-2 protein which is over-expressed in many types of tumors could be inactivated to a greater extent with the chlortoxin combination thus preventing the malignant protein from breaking away and invading other areas. Prof Miquin Zhang said the findings are important since brain cancers tend to be highly invasive.
