Your questions for General McChrystal

Will the July 2011 target for troop withdrawal give enough time for US and Nato forces to fully transition security responsibilities to the Afghans? Send us your comments and questions to General Stanley McChrystal, the top US and Nato commander in Afghanistan, who joins Riz Khan on Wednesday, December 9. Published: Tuesday, 08 December 2009, 10:27 AM Mecca time, 07:27 AM GMT Add your comment Comments Number of comments: 34 | Previous | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | Next Added: Wednesday, 09 December 2009, 03:23 PM Mecca time, 12:23 PM GMT My question for the general was originally submitted on Tuesday, so this is a second attempt:

Since the general gave less than truthful, or even a hint of, respectful treatment to Pat Tillman's family during the fiasco surrounding his less than honourable death from friendly fire, how much credibility is he audacious enough to think the world may expect from any answer given by him, especially when it will be fogged by "reasons of national security"? americanintifada, Santa Rosa, California, United States Added: Wednesday, 09 December 2009, 02:35 PM Mecca time, 11:35 AM GMT Mr. McChrystal, You and other westren Generals always saying : If we fail in Afghanistan, Pakistan will also fails. But I don't accept this view. Because Pakistan created and help till now Taliban and victory of Taliban will stabilize Pakistan. The war continue in Afghanistan because Pakistan will that Taliban take agian power in Afghanistan and USA don't want this. After the Taliban victory in Afghanistan it's very easy for Pakistan government to bring Pakistani Taliban(also a creation of Pakistan) with their Afghan brothers to table. Rashid, Frankfurt, Germany Added: Wednesday, 09 December 2009, 02:04 PM Mecca time, 11:04 AM GMT My question to general Mc Crystal would be: why are you effectively arming the Tajik Northern Alliance, the EU just recently lifted its arms embargo on General Dostum, when you full well know of the age old animosities between Pashtuns and Tajiks.

second question: How do you guarantee that the money you will give to warlords for their political/military support, actively or tacidly, will stop the massive heroin trade that is undertaken by them and the Governments cabinet members?

third question: why are the human rights and democratic birthpangs in Afghanistan more important than the human rights concerns in Americas back garden Honduras? Kraut, Hamburg, Germany Added: Wednesday, 09 December 2009, 11:16 AM Mecca time, 08:16 AM GMT if you are going to chase the taliban into pakistan, what next for pakistan? surely, the great minds who planned the invasion of afghanistan realised that this would happen...didn't they? are the american invasions of iraq and afghanistan part of a long term strategy to make iran "piggy in the middle" (as it now is) or is that just a 'coincidence'? what has been accomplished to benefit the afghanis, long term???? digdeeper, sydney, Australia Added: Wednesday, 09 December 2009, 08:28 AM Mecca time, 05:28 AM GMT We all know the history of Afghanistan that no foreign general had ever won over its people. This is partly the nature of the land of Afghanistan which only local people know the full access of all the caves under the mountains. To rewrite the history one should have tangible strategies to win the hearts and minds of the Afghan people, in which the killing of more innocent civilians would not win over. Does General Stanley tell us how different he is from his predecessors or whether he means that they are moving to the next country (ie Pakistan) to destroy and make other Afghanistan. To advice him, I think US and NATO should leave the region as soon as possible to prevent more bloodshed. Abdisamad, Ras Al Khaimah, United Arab Emirates Added: Wednesday, 09 December 2009, 07:56 AM Mecca time, 04:56 AM GMT How funny that the mighty US army gets a bloody nose again and again and again. You went to Vietnam and left it in a mess. You went to Somalia and left it in a mess. You went to Iraq and left it in a mess. You went to Afghanistan and you are still stuck in the mess you made out of it.Now you are making a new mess in Pakistan. How is possible that everywhere you go you create a mess and never learn a lesson? Ajaz Ahanger, Chennai, India Added: Wednesday, 09 December 2009, 07:30 AM Mecca time, 04:30 AM GMT General Stanley McChrystal, I strongly believe the Taliban’s can not be eliminated, if so, how then can you stabilise Afghanistan and transition security responsibilities to the Afghans without talking to the Taliban’s.

Pastor Jofoli, Accra - Ghana pastor jofoli, Accra, Ghana Added: Wednesday, 09 December 2009, 06:46 AM Mecca time, 03:46 AM GMT General McChrystal,

Could you please discuss your plans to initiate a village-level program in the Pashtun south that is similar to the Sunni Awakening movement in Iraq?

What is your take on the comparison of next year's surge to the Soviet surge and operations of 1985?

Do you plan on adding literacy and drug treatment programs to improve the literacy rate of Afghan troops and to battle high levels of drug addiction in the Afghan army?

Thank you Mike, Southwick, United States Added: Wednesday, 09 December 2009, 06:44 AM Mecca time, 03:44 AM GMT It has been years since I visited the Aljazeera site, and now that you have room for comments in English I first thank you for the invitation. Many years ago when US troops were invited to stay in Saudi Arabia in 1993 after the Gulf War, many Americans predicted the rise of a bin Laden and an al Qaeda if only because Muslims elsewhere might feel the need to build some guarantee that US troops would leave the Muslim Holyland when asked. While this shows why we were not too harsh against al Qaeda in the 1990s, the fact is that 30 days after we toppled Saddam by the 2003 invasion of Iraq all the danger of Saddam to Saudi Arabia was over. The Saudi Monarchy knew it and asked us to leave and we promptly left. That honorable evnt was 7 years ago. And since that time there has not been one speck of dust to justify the continuation of any al Qaeda that dares to speak of any Religion. Generals should say these things, instead of just targeting bin Laden to end such hypocritical terrorism. dolliefront, New York, United States Added: Wednesday, 09 December 2009, 05:14 AM Mecca time, 02:14 AM GMT Mr. McChrystal, would you agree with me as an american citizen when I say that it would be a waste of american blood and treasure to continue the war against the taliban? Wouldn't it make more sense, both militarily and politically, if we concentrate our efforts specifically against Al-Qaeda rather than trying to destroy the taliban, an organization known to have millions of members and sympathizers in afghanistan and in neighboring pakistan?

In my opinion, fighting the grass roots taliban organization is a lost cause. Rather than using our military to pacify and neutralize the taliban organization, we should instead send in thousands of american aid workers and experts who can rebuild roads, schools, and hospitals for the afghan people. This would definitely result in most of the taliban becoming our friends and allies. 30,000 american aid workers, rather than soldiers, would do wonders over there. Wouldn't you agree? #1. To: tom007 (#0)

Here's a question for the general. Why are the Afghanis trying to all look like Fidel Castro?

I mean really, what's up with that?

MapQuest really needs to start their directions on #5. Pretty sure I know how to get out of my neighborhood.
