(Newser) – Talk of the 30,000 troops Obama is sending to Afghanistan fails to note that they're likely to be joined by as many as 56,000 civilians, according to a tally by a congressional agency. The second surge would bring the number of independent contractors in Afghanistan to somewhere between 130,000 and 160,000, and even more if the strategy focuses heavily on construction and rebuilding.

The new civilian recruits could create unprecendented management challenges. To keep an eye on things, Congress has set aside $8 million for an electronic system tracing all contract-related information for Iraq and Afghanistan, reports the Washington Post. Tomorrow, a Senate committee led by Sen. Claire McCaskill will meet to assess "whether contracting oversight lessons learned from Iraq are being applied in Afghanistan." In the meantime, contracts continue to be awarded. (1 image)

130,000 and 160,000

it's BIG BUSINESS and anyone who thinks we're there for any other reason is willfully stupefied.

There is one problem with mercenaries.

When the cheese gets binding, they can cut and run.

There, fixed it.

They are there to make a killing - not a dying.

When Bush came into office, one of his first moves was to get the government drones and slugs off the payroll. Hire outside contractors and save boodles of money.

Right.

Recall Walter Reed with the wounded living in quarters maintained by the "contractors"??????

Each and every time the government hires "contractors" the tax payer gets swindled again.

The other advantage of a Mercenary Force, from the point of view of a tyrannical government, is that Mercenaries will do whatever, and I mean whatever, the Paymaster orders.

Yes, although this Mercenary Force also includes Special Ops killers from quite a few different countries. Anyone naive enough to think that all these Mercenaries are Americans is in for a rude awakening.

Sadly, the majority are ex-military that LIKED the idea of killing. Mostly lifers.

Money talks.

If you recall back in the 1930s hundreds of military pilots were lured away to China for the big bucks. Finally they were absorbed into the US Army and that they did not like.

would bring the number of independent contractors in Afghanistan to somewhere between 130,000 and 160,000,

Yeah, the need for "contractors" is obvious, there's bound to be a housing "boom" !

Nice pun :)

So, the number of contractors is "somewhere between 130,000 and 160,000", eh?

We haven't a clue on the actual number, but I'm positive it more than the above range, and thank goodness they're in the neighborhood with Pakistan about to meltdown. The Dark One's preoccupation with bombing Pakistan is all making sense now.

I read somewhere that the average "contractor" in the ME hauls in over $100,000.

The grunts that do the dying average less than $40,000.

A guy I know was hired to drive a truck in Iraq and he was to be paid $100,000.00/yr Tax-Free.
