Blackwater nowhere?

Zia-ul-Haque

The present government is strictly following the proverb: water, water everywhere but not a drop to drink. Blackwater is thickly scattered in many parts of the country but the government from top to bottom continues to deny their presence. The government may be partly true — since the Blackwater operatives presumably are operating under cover, various garbs and fictitious names but in connivance with the government. This justifies the government stand to some extent.

Months and months ago America had warned its nationals not to travel to Pakistan. But despite such warnings almost 10,000 Americans had been granted Pakistani visas during the past five months. Now should it be presumed that they are all American Embassy personnel? If not, then who are they? What is their mission or purpose of visit? Side by side some media reports had also revealed earlier that some weeks ago, two or three plane loads had touched down in close proximity to the federal capital and the passengers on board were whisked away unchecked along with their special belongings. Let’s remind our readers that when ex-president General Pervez Musharraf under an agreement allowed drone attacks in the tribal area, it was also part of the agreement that drones will continue their missions while the Pakistan government too would continue raising hue and cry in the shape of protests. Pakistani government will remain tight lipped and would not divulge that it was all part of the agreement.

Today’s elected democratic government still continues to follow the footsteps of the Musharraf regime so it can safely be presumed that it is all part of the same old styled game. Lately we have two news on the subject: The presence of over 200 Americans in Lahore a week ago and the arrest of five American nationals from Sargodha. The Americans in the city had occupied two floors of a five star hotel. The Hotel during those days was a ‘no go area’ for its regular visitors. Only the personnel of the security agencies were allowed to visit them.

According to reports they had arrived in the city after permission of the Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik and are said to be here much before the arrival of some American dignitaries, but no one arrived. Probably their actual mission remained camouflaged. Let’s face some facts: They (Americans) never wanted to rely on Pakistani security agencies. When Pakistani president visited America they only invited a list of 38 people — the entire entourage. So what was the logic in allowing American security personnel in such a large bulk, and that too even weeks before. Another point that’s very alarming is that who are those who travel in vehicles with tinted glasses (banned for Pakistani nationals) and fictitious number plates. In one such incident a vehicle was impounded by the local police but was released almost a week later. In yet another incident the Cantt area ASP hauled up an American national who profusely abused Pakistan, its police and people, but was only released after he tendered an apology a few hours later. Why they whisk away and refuse to be checked at various checkpoints? When chased and halted they abused the police personnel. Instead of sending such law violators to jails, the so-called high-ups pressurise the police to let them go scot free. This is how the protectors of law, disgrace its own people and the laws.

Rehman Malik, our Interior Minister sorry to say, seems to have lost all self respect. He had himself revealed that he was detained for six hours at a US airport (most probably New York) for checking. He should use his authority and grill each and every American citizen who flouts the law of our land.

Some Americans were caught photographing in the Cantt areas but were allowed safe passage after some weighty call. Use of tinted glasses, vehicles with fictitious number plates and carrying unlicensed arms, forcing their way unchecked at checkposts by Americans had been reported from various cities as well but the authorities seem to be acting like their loyal servants. Even the PM Yousaf Raza Gilani denies the presence of Blackwater in the country. But only a week ago the CIA Director has cancelled the contract awarded to Blackwater, working under the name of Xe. Under the contract Blackwater was assigned the duty of loading missiles and bombs, etc on drones at an undisclosed location in Balochistan. This proves that our prime minister and ministers have been deceiving their own nation but the CIA had exposed them. Now the missile loading duties have been assumed by the CIA’s own staff. At the same time the prime minister is unable to answer this question as to who are the people (Americans) now residing in the 356 rented banglows in Islamabad. Are they the personnel of the US embassy? If so, the next question is that were they previously residing in tents and where?

Lately five American nationals have been hauled up from Sargodha and numerous maps (Pakistani) have been recovered from their possession. The most alarming point is that in those maps Dera Ismael Khan, Miran Shah, Jhelum, Sarghoda, Karachi, Hyderabad and Sukkur cities have been encircled red. This needs special investigation but an FBI team had rushed into city and has started their investigations on the plea that the gang was already required by the American authorities. Had they been required, the Americans should have informed Pakistani authorities before hand. But no such proof is available. The FBI team would not have been allowed till the time the Pakistani authorities had completed their investigations. There is a widespread belief in Peshawar that Blackwater is involved in blasts in the city. According to local belief this is being done exactly in line with the CIA policy to destabilise Pakistan. Now here is an eye-witness account as a parallel. During a protest demonstration (against Bhutto government in 1977) on The Mall, Lahore, (Regal Cinema Chowk) the day when the renowned bookshop (Classic) was burnt, BBC correspondent Mark Tully incited the crowd thus: (also the CIA game), “Speed up your campaign, your victory is just in sight.”

Myself and late Professor Margubh Siddiqui, both standing closeby heard these remarks. Lastly we must keep in mind that in case we keep on following the Blackwater, it is capable of blackening the face of the entire nation — God forbid. But on the contrary, our government believes: water, water everywhere but Blackwater nowhere.
