Tanning salon operators are seeing red over a last-minute tax on their business in the health care reform bill. It's a ten percent tax on tanning bed salons paid for by consumers.

The so-called " tanning bed tax" was added to the bill by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada.

The tanning industry has been under increasing scrutiny from the Food And Drug Administration over the dangers of ultraviolet rays in tanning beds.

"This is a small tanning industry lobby and its Vitamin D, sunshinevitamin.org , tanningtruths.com and I bet they didn't have a chance to respond to this," believes Sharon Smith, owner of Tanner's Cove.

The tanning tax replaced a five percent tax on elective cosmetic surgeries and treatments like Botox in the health care reform bill. Pharmaceutical giant Allergan, which makes Botox, led a successful lobbying campaign to get it removed from the bill.

I have heard discussion as of late about the benefits of Tanning Beds in promoting the bodies production of Vitamin "D" and stimulating the production of other body produced chemicals resulting from exposure to sun light. It is said to be of benefit to people in particular who live in northern climes and who do not get sufficient exposure to direct sun light for at least half the year.

I haven't seen any studies on it, but the medical industry is loathe to study competitor's products that might provide low side effect benefits that they can't control and earn a monopoly profit from.

The botox industry has a lot more pull than the tanning bed folks, it seems. Since both "treatments" are bullshit for the obscenely vain, I don't really care much how this one comes out (other than being generally against all stupid taxes)

The people I have seen who are habitual tanning bed users look older than they are. It seems like a waste of money to me.

You are right in that botox has a lot more pull. Allergan, Inc., who makes botox for the US market, is a multi-billion dollar pharmaceutical company. The tanning bed folks never stood a chance.
