DURANT, Okla. -- The Oklahoma State Health Department is preparing to test a 60-pound beaver for rabies after it bit a small boy outside an apartment complex in southern Oklahoma.

Tammy Lane said her 5-year-old son went outside to get the family cat on Saturday. But instead of finding a feline, he was attacked by a beaver after trying to pet the animal, according to KOCO-TV in Oklahoma City.

"I heard screaming. I went to see what was happening. His leg was pretty bad," Lane said.

She rushed her son to a local hospital and called police.

"They didn't believe it was a beaver. They thought it was a raccoon," Lane said.

However, Lane's boyfriend took a photo of the beaver after he beat it with a crowbar.

A Durant Police Department spokeswoman said this was the department's first report of a beaver attack.

"We get our share of dog bites, cat bites. This is our first one for beavers," police Lt. Carrie Wyrick said.

Lane said the 60-pound beaver was bigger than her 42-pound son and could have easily carried him away. The animal bit a chunk out of the boy's calf.

"My biggest worry is that he has rabies, and I don't know. Nobody knows," Lane said.

Health Department officials said rabies in beavers is rare. Workers planned to test the beaver on Wednesday.

People who don't know, and that includes little kids, don't put enough emphasis on the "wild" in Wild animal.

My favorite personal experience was with my city girl aunt hiking in the Colorado Rockies. (She is my mom's youngest sister and so not that much older than me - I was in my twenties and she in her early 30's - she also had the most truly Raven Black hair I've ever seen on a woman - contrasted against a milk complexion.) We had hiked down from one lake down to a lower lake to check out the fishing - nothing doing. So, we were following the trail back up to the upper lake and then the trail back out to the car. She had gotten maybe 40 or 50 feet in front of me going ga-ga over the wonders of nature (it was a beautiful area) when I heard her exclaim "Oh, look at the Beaver. I want to get closer." And sure enough as I caught up with her and started looking over her shoulder there, sitting on a stump sunning itself, was about 40 pounds of the meanest varmint in the forest - a Wolverine. She repeated her desire to get closer "to look at the Beaver" about the same time I was getting itchy feet before the critter demonstrated why nobody messes with a Wolverine - including a full grown cougar. At that point I gently guided off to the side so we could around saying "that's no Beaver" and we're getting out of here. She was quite upset with me that I wouldn't let her get closer to "look at the Beaver" up close and personal.

Now there is an understatement. I wonder how much of it can be contributed to the idealization of animals in the media and on television?

Probably quite a bit. Disney, despite being fun to watch, no doubt contributed a lot. "Charley the Lonesome Cougar" comes to mind. You don't "pet" the kitty in the forest, and preferably you have .357 to hand when you see one in the wild. You are likely right though - all of the anthropomorphized animals in different programs lead to a false estimation of what they are really like in the wild. If you're in Grizzly Country the first thing you have to know is A. he is not cuddly, and B. he outweighs you by several hundred very mean pounds that can hit 40 miles an hour at a dead gallop.
