Nutrition MD Neil Barnard launches a 21-day Vegan diet to help you keep your arteries from clogging up with cholesterol from animal fats; means cutting out all animal source food, including dairy which will also help men avoid prostate problems. Cheese of which Americans consume 30 pounds annually should be avoided, even on pizzas (replace it with extra tomato sauce).

Risk of cardiovascular disease increases 2% for each one percent rise in total cholesterol. Desirable cholesterol concentration is 200mg/dl but epidemiological evidence suggests risk of cardiac events decreases as total cholesterol levels plateau at 150 mg/dl.

Vegan diets free of cholesterol and very low in saturated fat reduce LDL (bad cholesterol) by 17 - 40%, with strongest effect seen when diet is combined with exercise. Soluble fibre foods: oats, barley, legumes and many fruits and vegetables reduce cholesterol by binding with bile acids.

Another MD, Victor Marchione in an ad promoting his $39 monthly Food Doctor newsletter writes about the cholesterol-lowering property of blueberries, pistachios and sunflower seeds, and of flavones found in orange, lemon and lime (zest) peel, cancer-fighting property of superoxide dismutase found in maple syrup, and the polysaccaride found in especially white mustard seeds. Orange-colored tangerine tomato is best for anti-cancer lycopene; water melons stored at room temperature have 40% more lycopene than those in cold storage.

Dr. Marchione notes a study that found 8 out of ten store products were unhealthy due to low nutrient content, high levels of sugar, trans fats...all of which probably explains why health care costs are going through the roof.

I eat 4 soft boiled eggs a day. I do not eat fried food but I do eat grapes, an orange, an apple, a grapefruit every day. I have low cholesterol.

There is no such thing as "vegan". There is such a thing as "herbivore". While omnivores may eat a herbivores diet they will never ever possibly be an herbivore.

A while back Dr. Barnard was on Noory's C2C and said there are just two parts of the egg you ought to avoid: the yolk and the white. The yolk is the single biggest source of cholesterol of any food, about 213 mg in that tiny little yolk, and most of the fat in that is saturated fat. The white is nothing but animal protein and we've learned to be concerned not just about animal fat but animal protein as well. At Harvard the School of Public Health...in their Nursing Health Study (finding) one of the biggest predictors to loss of kidney function over time...is animal protein what does it. The more animal protein a person eats the more kidney function they lose. The other thing is that animal protein seems to cause the body to lose calcium.

Your low cholesterol despite all those eggs suggests that your genetics and consequent digestive/metabolic processes or insides of arteries are good in dealing with cholesterol but probably is not the case of the millions with high blood pressure. Probably analogous to hemochromatosis stemming from inheriting a particular gene from both parents and not being able to dispose of excess iron in the blood.

Hopefully, the Electronic Health Records program now being developed in the US will be expanded to include patient lifestyle and general diet information and eventually made available to researchers who could correlate it with the patient's genetic map to identify gene sequences which bring about particular organ or other deficiencies so that information could be used to tell individuals what they need to avoid or be treated for (from a reading of a genetic map).

Then, this may be redundant if there's anything to stock touters hype that scientists are close to figuring out how to make the body heal itself -- rebuilding liver, kidneys, lung, heart, immune system...for a radically increased lifespan.

Then again, if there are millions to be made in the stocks of these medical companies this "healing" could be costly.
