How can your pipes freeze in winter where you live? Especially with all that man made climate change stuff going on?

Get a space heater and put it near the pipes, should help.

Are they inside or outside pipes?

If they're inside pipes, try turning on the hot water faucet in the bathtub. When the pipes start to thaw, the trickle of hot water from the hot water tank will warm up the pipes faster, that's if it's just the inside pipes that are frozen...

Yikes. Thank God mine are still flowing. It's about 7 degrees here and I don't know what the WCI is. I'm on surgical recovery and sorta trapped here. Without running water and utils, it would be even more maddening.

Hopefully there won't be any bursting.

Like a goose, I waited until yesterday afternoon to shop for hose-bid covers - I don't believe that there are any left in Austin.

So I dripped all the exterior faucets and so far so good; but it's forecast to drop down to 20 tonight.

Yowser!

Hi Christine

Here is some first aid:

1. Step 1

Open the faucet nearest the pipe, if possible. Do not force it. 2. Step 2

Wrap the pipe in a towel and secure it with duct tape. 3. Step 3

Pour boiling water over the towel. Repeat until the water has thawed and runs through the faucet. 4. Step 4

Alternatively, wrap the pipe in a heating pad or place a heat lamp next to it. If you lack one of these, try a handheld hair dryer or a small electric heater.

make a box with 2 sides a back and a top with the top about six inches square and the sides and back tall enough to clear the top of your bib. about mid way up the inside of the back install a ceramic light-bulb fixture and wire (remember black wire to the brass screw and white wire to the silver colored screw).

put a 100 watt incandescent bulb in the fixture and set the box so it covers the bib and plug in the light. it will produce plenty of heat to keep your bib and entry (supply) pipe from freezing. the box can be built from 1 by stock or 3/4 inch plywood. you should only need one as your bib closest to your water meter is the supply line with the other bib coming through wall. if your pipes run through your attic they will need to warmed also. a spot light in a clamp on light fixture aimed across both the hot and cold lines will keep them from freezing. unless the faucets are open nearly full the pipes if not heated can still freeze. just in normal use my water bill runs a "C" note a month and that is for water unfit to drink.

Frozen Pipe Behind a Wall

When you find that the frozen pipe serving the faucet is behind a wall or ceiling, you've got a challenge on your hands. You have three choices:

Turn up the heat in the house and wait;
Tear out the wall or ceiling section to get at the frozen section of pipe. Then thaw the pipe as an exposed pipe;
Use an infrared lamp or lamps to assist in heating the wall section in front of where you think the frozen section is located. Infrared lamps are better than regular heat lamps because they pass through the air without heating it and will direct more energy to warming the wall and frozen pipe.

oh brother. it's anyone's guess where the frozen pipe(s) is!

what! you don't have a table saw? if you used 1 by 8 all you would need is a good cross cut saw or sliding compound miter saw a hammer or screw gun and the light fixture and wiring long enough to reach the nearest outlet. but any way inspect your pipes as they thaw if they are run through your attic, have someone available to close the valve at the water meter should you find a pipe or two that ruptured.

if none of your water is running it is most likely where the supply line from the meter comes out of the ground next to your house. get a clamp on spot light fixture and spot light bulb aim it at the pipe and turn it on. for best results enclose the light and pipe in something even if it's just a tent made from a blanket surrounding but not in contact with the light or the lamp fixture.

On the positive, if the frozen pipe is in a wall and has burst from the expanding water freezing then you could have a wall leak when it thaws.

Isn't that cheery?

All I have to say is I'm thankful that I've never had the problem as I learned early growing up where if it got up to freezing in the winter that was a heat wave.

Something that would work is a seed starter's heat cable. You can find them at garden stores. They come in two types - mats and cables and in a couple of different lenghts. Wrap it around where the pipe comes out of the ground and tape it in place (Gaffer's Tape is best but regular Duct Tape will work. You'll likely need an exterior weatherproof extension cord, but that should do a gentle thaw which is less likely to cause a pipe to burst. If you have something to wrap around as insulation that would hold the heat in and speed up the process. And when it's all done you can start seeds for the garden.

do you have an electric blanket? put it around the supply line and cover it with a tarp that will keep the wind out. set it to high and plug it in and again watch for leaks from a ruptured pipe. just watch the dial on your water meter, if it starts spinning like a fan there is copious amounts of water flowing.

It occurred to me also that depending upon how much Ice is in there that you might need more than one cable and/or reposition them as the pipe thaws. Once you have water flowing then keep it turned on and flowing for a while as that will continue to melt the ice remaining in the pipe.

P.S. I hope my warped sense of humor didn't offend in a trying moment. ;-)

Yikes! I have never heard of dripping your outside water during a freeze. Generally we have to make sure all of the hoses are disconnected and that there is no water in the outside lines.

Most people up here in Idaho who have sprinklers will have them blown out before winter comes. I would call somewhere and get some advice on what to do with the outside water since you began to trickle it.

One thing you don't want is the water in the lines to freeze up expand and then burst the pipes.

all we have exposed on the exterior is hose bibs, front and back. is it those we're supposed to try this on?

For what it is worth, this is the nearest assessment as I see it:

It is obviously cold enough that a section of your pipe close to an outside wall is frozen solid and blocking the flow of the water. The whole pipe-system in the house in all likelihood is NOT frozen (yet). There is however, a small section of the pipe that is vulnerable to the outside (low) temperature.

If one could find the location (most likely in an outside wall) the application of warmth from the inside and possible protection from the outside, should prove helpful. _____________

(I live in Canada, for the last 20 some years our outside walls are 2x6 construction and very well insulated. We have experienced 25F below zero and nothing froze.)

heat gun, aka souped-up hairdryer

my pipes always used to freeze up in the same place every time, under the house close to where the water main entered the house... a few minutes ---didnt take long at all, with one of these things on "high"--- did the trick.

if you dont know where the pipes are frozen, the logical place to start thawing operations would be: (a) closest to where the water enters the house (on the theory that the heated water would naturally travel towards the frozen spot if there was any movement at all), and (b) where you figure the pipes would get coldest.

could be both are in the same place.

meanwhile, i made lots of spidery friends when i was thawing the pipes in the crawlspace under the house.

In winter time plumbers are our enemies.

They sit in their shop sticking pins in people to cause frozen pipes. When the phone rings, they KNOW they are KING and you are gonna pay. First question is always, the same, do you understand my fees????

No BS excuses will work, you are on social security, you are sick, no money in bank, all that is brushed aside, "do you understand my fees"?????

Then you start whining and sniveling, to no avail, you start pleading for him to show up. He baits you for another half hour before he grudgingly says he will put you on a list.

List you say, what damned list??????

That is the nice thing about living in the cold zone - so far as this stuff goes - 2 x 6 construction is pretty much standard any more and required by code - as is extra insulation and pipe wraps.

Heating cables are cheaper. And they don't snicker. Makes me glad I'm Trailer Trash with a simple distribution system and a short connection to the water main - under the house with easy access. Although we have been as cold as 10 or 11 without any problems.

This year is much better than last. Last year at this time it was 20 degrees with a foot and a half of snow. Today it is just raining and 38. I actually did some work on some of my containers for the garden yesterday as it was dry - a rarity this time of year.

Christine,

If and when you do get your pipes thawed, if it is to get really cold then you need to trickle the water in the sinks and other areas. What I do is usually trickle both a little from hot and a little from the cold so that both pipes have some water coming through.

Make sure to take of the hoses to any outside pipes. I made it all the way through one winter without anything bursting until one of the hose bibs did a number in spring because there was a hose connected and some water up in the bib.

Good luck. I hope they do not burst on you. Two winters ago we had a whole bunch of people that happened to.

What part of the country are you located in? In Idaho I don't worry unless we get down in the low single digits about frozen pipes. But irrigation is usually always taken care of before winter.

This winter has been relatively mild. Although it was it the teens at night this week we hardly have had any snow this year. And it is suppose to get back up into the 40's next week.

I think the heat gun (which you can get at an Electronics Repair Supply) or the Gardener's Heat Cable are likely your best bets. Either that or time and crossed fingers that nothing has burst.

Christine and I are in Austin, on the eastern edge of the Texas Hill Country. This kind of winter blows through every fifteen years or so.

We are definitely not properly geared for it.

One other hint, wherever there are faucets in the home leave the cabinet doors open so the warm air gets to the supply lines.

When our pipes first froze after we moved here what I did was hair dryer and I would boil water and put it in the bathtub hoping to warm it enough to melt some of the ice without it expanding. Depending were the pipes are you may try a heat lamp in one area and hair dryer in another. It takes a long time with a hair dryer.

true, I'm not sure about this far south and I don't recall seeing it here in the Corpus Christi area but they make an electric tape just for pipes I used it in Virginia when I was stationed at Yorktown to keep both my well head and separator tank from freezing. the good thing was all of the plumbing was under the back porch so it was protected from the wind. link for heat tape

I turned off the water at the curb, turned off the water heater power, opened the cabinets beneath the sinks, and opened all the taps in the house and am using 1 gal water jugs until Sunday when the temperature gets above freezing. I don't want to have to call a plumber.

P.S. That's why they called the old Diesel Submarines "Pig Boats" because there was never enough water, at sea, to shower in fresh water.

If you have water in the pipes you need to get it trickling or flowing before it warms up. The ice in those pipes expands when it warms up and causes pipes to burst. You need to warm it up somehow.

Actually, here when our pipes freeze, we call the banker first and plumber second.

I'll bite. Why?

not everyone is comfortable doing their own home plumbing, speaking of which I really need to finish the work on the kids bathroom. just need to finish off sealing in the shower stall and tiling the wall. I installed what is a three walled shower stall but due to room constraints and the window on back wall I only purchased the back wall and floor pan. had a friend weld up a surround from aluminum tubing and plate from the shower curtain it was lot cheaper to have him do it than me buying a tig unit and with the stick and wire welders I already have I don't have room for another welder. heck I can't finish the bathroom without clearing room around the table saw to work the oak side caps I have planned for the shower stall back.

That is the nice thing about living in the cold zone - so far as this stuff goes - 2 x 6 construction is pretty much standard any more and required by code - as is extra insulation and pipe wraps.

Actually, 2x6 construction in a hotter climate is good to have as well (though more expensive) in Summer it keeps the heat out longer too. One can live without an air conditioner, I have never had one.

Damn, Christine that sucks. I'm sorry to hear that this happened to you. I hope they don't burst on you. I had that happen a couple of years ago and it's expensive. After that experience I had the plumber wrap all of the pipes with this electric covering that I was able to plug in during the extreme cold. It was probably overkill for the Ozarks, but better that than having to go through that crap again.

That doesn't always work. When my pipes burst a few years ago I had every faucet in the house trickling, to include the bath tubs. I later found out that there was a section of pipe under the crawl space where the insulation had somehow come off and of course this is where it burst. It was a very expensive lesson to learn. I ended up installing this high speed, low drag insulation that has a heating element in it that I can plug into the wall when it gets super cold.

I've also learned that it is important to crawl under the house and check the pipe insulation every fall.

Well, I guess this'll teach you for being a deadbeat and not sending in your global warming carbon credit tax into Goldman Sachs NYC.

All seriousness aside, you NEVER EVER want to let an outside faucet drip in cold weather, it will freeze everytime. Your outside faucets are most likely a freezeproof type, meaning that the actual valve seat is about a foot inside the house. When you shut off the faucet, the water in the outlet pipe needs to be able to drain out, which is why you need to disconnect garden hoses.

I'm guessing you have your water meters outside in a box somewhere in your yard and that's where it froze. Here, they're inside the house and all water lines are buried below the frostline. If you have access to the box you might want to look inside it to make sure the pipes or the meter aren't broken. You might want to put a bale or two of straw on top of the box to insulate it.

Leaving a little water drip INSIDE the house will keep enough water flowing through the pipe outside to keep it from freezing. It also acts as a pressure relief if the pipes do freeze and may keep the pipes from bursting.

Make sure you get those outside faucets flushed out and shut off & check for any water leaks if they broke. I don't think you should have to mess around with heat tape or any thing like that, but if you do, call me. Usually we dont get problems with frozen pipes around here until it gets below zero and stays there a while.

Boy that would be a bummer. But chances are better of not having pipes burst if you trickle your water than if do not. I don't even know if we have what you would call a crawl space under the house.

There is no doubt that it is better to trickle water than not. I did not mean to imply otherwise. Even after we put the new insulation on and had it plugged in we tricked the water. It did suck. Mainly because in the town we lived in there was only one plumber and it took him three days to get to us. I hate going without water. We now live in a different town and rent out house, so I definitely turn the water on. However, to be safe, instead of a trickle, I keep all the faucets on at the lowest steady flow that I can get it. Especially tonight when they say it's supposed to get to -7.

In texas your water supply and meter are on the outside of the house, above ground?

Must be nice to be that certain it would never get cold enough to freeze.

If this is really the case, then some standard plumbing heat wrap would do the trick to thaw it now and keep it from freezing again in the future. Most of the heat wrap kits have a built in thermostat in the plug so that it only comes on when temps dip below 35 degrees.

I'm not sure if you'll be able to get one locally though, since pipes never freeze in Texas. :P

However, I'd try calling hardware stores, just in case.

Some of the pictures I've seen of southern water meters are like a plastic box in the ground with the top of the box flush with the ground. Access to the meter is by removing the top of the box.

You certainly wouldn't get by with that here in NE Indiana.

my supply line is no more than 16 inches under ground at the deepest which is next to the house and less than 6 at the meter. there is about 20 inches of the supply line exposed to air before it goes into the wall and up to the attic. heck even out main breakers are outside here.

some years back (30 or so) my dad was doing something with a house he owned, any way he had installed a precast cement stair for the front porch. as the V.A. was involved they sent an inspector to check stuff, the guy measured the height of the top stair from the ground and said because it was 1/2 inch higher than code it required a railing. so my dad kicks some dirt into the corner where the measurement was taken and said measure it again, that completed the inspection with no railing ever being installed.

In 2007, the FBI reported on concern about white supremacists recruiting soldiers, saying "hundreds" of neo-Nazis were in the active military. But in April, a Department of Homeland Security report on extremism that reiterated much the same point was widely criticized by veterans groups and some conservative politicians as being unpatriotic, leading the Justice Department to retract the DHS report.

Critics acknowledge that extremism in the Army is a touchy political subject.

Keep a space heater by the pipes to prevent them from freezing up or else you won't be able to flush your toilet either. Also, keep a space heater in your bathroom and have it running at around 60 degrees just enough to keep it warm in there so that the pipes in the bathroom don't freeze up.

What is handy is having a stock of clean milk cartons filled with water and kept in the house near fireplace for bathing purposes and drinking. Label them so you know what carton is for. I'd keep about 30 around. You never know about freezing temps like these.

Also when its icy outside from below zero temps and you have ice on your power lines, most likely that will cause power outages. It's best to have lots of candles and batteries for flashlights when power goes out.

something's puzzling me, has puzzled me for a long time...

all those people in SE asia, who didnt have hot showers and shit in the ocean, and wore dazzling white shirts.

we have to assume they didnt have a god of hot showers, or a god of flush toilets, or a god of whirlpool washers and dryers, but they seemed to be clean, anyhow.

is that why we killed millions of them?

They always used to say that they were godless commies, so the white shirt thing is quite the paradox.

I'm pretty sure though that we had to kill them because they were going to invade Texas. Yes, that's my story, and I'm stickin' to it. My country, right or wrong and all that.

the logic being: if they were godless, and cleanliness is next to godliness, then white shirts would be impossible.

makes sense to me.

maybe there's something else at work here... the threat to texas makes as much sense as

none of it makes sense, unless you're a looter.

The last few years I think the plumbers were taking time to get to people here also. One year even a few businesses and schools had pipes break. When they have that many at once it can take a while even when there are a bunch of plumbers. This year has been a pretty mild winter here.

Well hopefully after time we have learned enough to avoid it!! I know there are no guarantees though.

Trying to figure this out is making me dizzy. I like it.

my working hypothesis for figuring it out is this:

the people who were paying attention knew, by the sixties, that america was pretty much fucked, mostly because america wasnt finding enough oil, and and would become dependent on foreign oil.

american oil production peaked in 1970, in the middle of the vietnamese war, confirming looters' suspicions that america was doomed.

the only thing left to do was loot.

meanwhile, the israel lobby assassinates kennedy, sending a message to US politicians that "you'd best get with the program."

the program being: preserve israel at any cost.

the program was eventually refined by the AEI, which figured that the only thing left to do was grab the remaining oil at gunpoint... supposedly.

the problem being: it's likely that the "war on terror" is nothing more than cover for looting america as it expires.

the basic premise being: most of the big dogs have written israel off, and all they care about is looting enough to buy refuge wherever.

the dismal performance of the israelis seems to confirm the theory.

the routine atrocities israel performs dont seem to be consistent with efforts to preserve israel, and so we have to assume that the deterioration in israel is a symptom of israeli leadership being looters themselves.

in the Philippines every house I lived in had an elevated water tank of around 400 gallons and an inline water heater that plumbed between the shower water pipe an the shower head. as for cleaning the clothes we had Mr. Clean, Tide among other bars of soap used to do the wash by hand in a big pan. I would use a bar of Mr. Clean to wash out cuts the stuff was great for avoiding infection.

even when they had the travel restrictions in the late eighties due to zoomies in Angeles City getting themselves shot I would go to places 'canos didn't go, learning Tagalog had its advantages. if one did not speak Tagalog if they went into a pinoy bar they didn't stay long. every one I went into for the first time they would show their displeasure of my presence by breaking ashtrays and glasses on the floor where I was sitting I'd just say "hoy pare bukit ganya ka?" after that it'd be like we'd been drink buddies for years.

hey pal why do you have to be like that? is the basic translation. I didn't like paying tourist prices for beer so I was more likely to hang out at a sari-sari store and drink or the pinoy bars. the bars that catered to 'canos would charge from 10 to 20 pesos for a beer, I never paid more than 6 pesos a beer at the pinoy bars and as little as 3 pesos at the sari-sari stores. hinda ko kariput, ako yagit! Good example that truth and humor are deeply connected.

I don't consider Wilderness "roughing it". I consider it a slice of heaven. I can almost smell the high pines as I type and see visions of trout taking a dry fly.

"The real deal is this: the ‘royalty’ controlling the court, the ones with the power, the ones with the ability to make a difference, with the ability to change our course, the ones who will live in infamy if we pass the tipping points, are the captains of industry, CEOs in fossil fuel companies such as EXXON/Mobil, automobile manufacturers, utilities, all of the leaders who have placed short-term profit above the fate of the planet and the well-being of our children." - James Hansen

Check for exposed pipes in your garage if it's unheated.

I keep a 60w light bulb burning in my well-house when its below freezing. It doesn't take much to keep lines free of ice.

Success. I turned on the water this afternoon and no leaks. It's still getting down to 25 tonight along the Red River but I'll leave the water on and run a steady trickle through the indoor faucets.
